I love this place. With the name goes the atmosphere, it’s a nice little place and I absolutely love the back patio. Our bartender, bearded fellow with shorts on had a great personality and even handled a rowdy patron with class, not embarrassing her anymore than she was doing herself. He got her to chill and relax while waiting for her ride. Thanks guys for making this place still a chill hangout spot.

If Plato were to walk into a bar, he would certainly declare Shanty the platonic ideal of a dive bar. It meets all the basic requirements:
– Cheap, strong, well-poured drinks
– Friendly, quirky, chatty locals
– Pool table
– Good music
– Smoking patio
– Just the right amount of dive bar fragrance
What puts Shanty in the top tier, however, is the bartenders. They are masters. Eureka is a rough town. The crew manage to make everyone feel welcome, while also making sure everyone is respectful to everyone else. So Shanty is the local gay bar, biker bar, service industry after-work bar, and watering hole for everyone from 21-year-old couples to grizzled retired lumberjacks. Do no mess with these bartenders, or you’ll suffer the fates of those who’ve offered bad reviews here. Honor their trade, and you’ll be well attended to.
Also, ping pong, arcade games, breakfast (??!), and awesome theme nights. Spend your Humboldt coast night in Eureka and grab a drink at Shanty.

I’ve had two negative experiences that will prevent me from ever coming back here. The first is understandable but still rude. I enter the bar later into the night by myself. Order a beer, present my ID, and take a few sips. The bartender (older man, not sure of the name) takes the beer out of my hands and tells me my ID expired. So far, not that big of a deal. Bummer for me but I get that they need to be careful otherwise they could lose their liquor license. The real problem is that I needed to ask the bartender for my money back and after walking away I realized he kept the tip. Months later I come in with two friends and we sit down in a booth because the bartenders seem busy. We chat for a few minutes and haven’t ordered anything. The next thing I know the same bartender as before is shining a flashlight in my eyes to get my attention so he can ask for my ID. I walk to the bar and present my ID (now renewed) and the bartender is DRIPPING with “go ahead, cause a problem” energy. Funniest thing is, he didnt even take an order when he ID’d me. Scanned it, handed it to me, and walked away. The atmosphere is nice and the drinks are okay, but I’d rather go to any of the other bars in the area and not risk another interaction with that gray haired jerk. Sucks because it’s a nice bar otherwise.

Don’t recommend, bartenders are the worst in town. They ‘blow up’ on customers whenever the slightest complications arise and will refuse to make drinks because they don’t wanna make it.
Rest is cool but “They” kill the vibe.

Terrible bartender the emo girl that’s 25. Kicks everyone out like her dad owns the bar. I’ll definitely never go back
