Oldest tavern in Lancaster County. Very pleasant waitresses. Atmosphere included barstool scholars debating a variety of topics. Service was prompt and fare was very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the experience as first-time patrons there, but the tavern appears to cater to a broad array of local clientele. Great place to visit and eat.

I lived in Philadelphia for a long time. I have visited many city and small town bars. I have never been to a bar with such great service, food to price ratio and accommodations. We’ve been going to this bar for a few years now (not often enough to be remembered by the staff to be frank). My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the pickle back shots, the menu that gets updated rather often and keeps it fresh, and the interior. This time we came with our dog and they gave us a wonderful spot at a table on a lawn under the tree in the back of the place. We were the only ones there and the place was packed, but the staff kept checking on us with perfect intervals. They brought out the water bowl for our dog and there was even a doggie bag dispenser. This exceeded our already high expectations of the place!

First time here. They were always closed whenever we went through the town. Sat outside. Wasn’t crowded for lunch on a nice Saturday. Menu wasn’t very big, but food was good. Portions were a little small, but that said prices were reasonable for the size. I’ll go back again. Service was fantastic.

Such a historic bar and super friendly staff. I could spend hours just looking at the walls and the pictures and talking to all that nice patrons. Had the burger and a salad and it was perfect just as ordered. But what I really liked was the beer selection, out of the 10 or 12 taps only two or three IPAs, thus they had excellent other choices, really like that in a bar these days.

This is the type of place, although we do not go often but if you do, “Everyone knows your name.” VERY good food, VERY friendly people, beautiful Tavern. Thank you for a great Quesadilla w/chicken and House Salad, delicious blue cheese dressing and Cheese Steak and Soup. This time had the Flatbread pizza, Vegetarian Spring Roll with peanut sauce and my husband was hungry for their Ham and Turkey sandwich, all delicious. Seems we are going more and more as everything is made to order and fresh.

Stopped in for lunch while passing through Marietta and Shanks did not disappoint. Who knew we would be dining in 200 year old tavern! The atmosphere was so neat and our waiter (Jimmy?) was super attentive and welcoming. I got the turkey pesto sandwich and my mom got the balsamic flatbread which were both super tasty and filling. Decent prices too! Love this little place! We’ll be back.

Found it on a historical tavern web site so we thought we’d try it. We arrived on our motorcycle a half hr before they opened. I guess they saw us, and invited us in early. The food was awesome and the service was friendly and comfortable. Felt like we were one if the regulars! Definitely would stop again if in the area!

Great place to stop and grab a drink and a bike to eat. Right on the Northwest River Trail. Outdoor seating is available too. If they have the chicken salad special it is always worth it.
