I’ve dined in before and the meal was decent but recently ordered take out for one of their “tandoori specials” – for the price of $28.99 I was shocked when I received the very light bag. Inherently, I inspected the bag to see if everything was there and it seemed I was only missing the naan. The manager was very helpful and ran a fresh piece out to my car, but I was still dubious by the looks of the portion and weight of the bag.

When I got home, my suspicions were unfortunately proved true, and for the whopping price of nearly $30, I got 4 small pieces of potato curry, maybe 1 chicken breast worth of tandoori chicken, 3 measly pieces of paneer, a small cup of rice, and a singular piece of naan.

Also, I didn’t realize upon first inspection (my fault, I guess?) but they also forgot the mint chutney what is tandoor without mint chutney!! At this rate I’m so frustrated I don’t even want to eat this food.

Considering the regular half chicken tandoori is $18.99, I expected at least a half chicken’s worth. The manager did mention this was a new dish (not sure if that’s just excuse for naan mistake) but in general I was really disappointed. Don’t think I will be back.

The food is sooo good and the service is amazing. I go here almost weekly with my boyfriend for their amazing lunch buffet and the waiter gets us a lemonade right when he sees us now. The buffet has so many options and the food is so flavorful and delicious!

We went for the buffet and it looked beautiful… but *everything* (except the rice) had cilantro. I’m Benadryl levels of allergic. BUT staff was extremely kind and accommodating and made me a dish without any cilantro (mattar paneer, heavenly sauce). Mango lassi was delicious. Desserts, also delicious.

Excellent service and atmosphere, and I really appreciated the cilantro accommodation.

In my line of work, choosing a lunch venue for client meetings is critical. The atmosphere must be conducive to conversation, the service discreet yet attentive, and the food impressive without being distracting. Shalimar excels on all fronts. The dining area is elegantly appointed with subtle décor, allowing for private conversation without overwhelming noise. The service team is polished—prompt with orders, knowledgeable about the menu, and intuitive about pacing. We shared the Tandoori Mixed Grill, which was an excellent, non-messy showcase dish, followed by the Dal Makhani and Basmati Rice. The flavors were sophisticated and universally appreciated, sparking positive conversation. The entire experience felt seamless and elevated, leaving a strong, professional impression. I will undoubtedly be making Shalimar my go-to for business lunches moving forward.

Last weekend was my parents’ 40th anniversary, and finding a place that pleased everyone—from my picky kids to my traditionalist dad—felt impossible. Then we found Shalimar. From the moment we walked in, the warm, aromatic air and the staff’s genuine smiles set the tone. They helped us push tables together like a big family feast. The Butter Chicken was, as promised, sublime, but the real winner was the Vegetable Thali for the kids—a colorful adventure plate that had them trying (and loving!) new things. The manager even brought out a small, complimentary dessert for my parents to sweeten their celebration. It wasn’t just dinner; it felt like being welcomed into someone’s home. We left full, happy, and with a new tradition. Thank you, Shalimar, for turning a simple dinner into a cherished memory.

Studying abroad can be tough, and sometimes you just miss the feeling of a hearty, home-cooked meal. A friend (a fellow tourist in this city!) dragged me to Shalimar, saying it would cure my homesickness. She was SO right. The vibe is instantly friendly and unpretentious. The staff chatted with us like we were regulars, recommending the Chicken Tikka Masala and a side of saag paneer. The portions are incredibly generous for the price—I got two full meals out of it! The food is rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over a lassi, study a bit, and just feel welcomed. Whether you’re a broke student craving quality, a tourist looking for an authentic meal, or just someone needing a delicious pick-me-up, Shalimar is your spot. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a haven.

As a passionate home cook of Indian food, I’m often disappointed by restaurants that over-simplify or westernize flavors. Shalimar is a glorious exception. This review is focused on what matters: the food and technique. We started with the Chaat Papdi—a perfect balance of tangy, sweet, and crunchy, with the yogurt and chutneys clearly freshly made. The Lamb Rogan Josh was the star: the meat, fall-apart tender, had clearly been slow-cooked in a complex, layered gravy where I could distinguish the warmth of cardamom, the subtle kick of Kashmiri chili, and the depth of slow-cooked onions. The Garlic Naan was blistered and chewy in all the right ways. This is not curry; this is regional, deliberate cooking. The menu is a well-curated journey, and the quality is consistent from the first bite to the last piece of Gulab Jamun. For anyone who believes Indian food is a sophisticated art form, Shalimar is your gallery.

Had a crucial lunch meeting with an international client. The refined atmosphere of Shalimar set the right tone. We shared the Assorted Bread Basket as an interactive starter, and both chose the elegantly spiced Chicken Lababdar. The successful deal was definitely sealed over that exquisite meal.

Shalimar was really good! We were walking around downtown Ann Arbor and it sounded pretty good so we figured we’d check it out. Shalimar has a lunch buffet with a lot of solid options. This is one of the plates that I had. There was a good variety of dishes and all the food was good! On the weekends the buffet is a little bit more expensive, but overall it was a pretty solid value for $17.99. Pretty solid Indian food and I enjoyed the buffet experience!

Our study group’s headquarters. We’ll camp out for hours with laptops, and the staff is super cool about it as long as we order. We always get the Assorted Bread Basket to share (the Chilli Naan has a kick!) and a couple of big curries like Chicken Handi or Aloo Gobi. The free WiFi and unlimited refills on chai? Lifesavers. Food that fuels both the brain and the soul.
