“Have You Tasted the Falafel? Because You Should.”

“Have you tasted the falafel?” cried the Shakalafel food truck vendor, as he casually passed a perfectly fried ball of seasoned chickpeas out the window like it was an offering from the Mediterranean gods. Reader, I had tasted the falafel. And there was no turning back.

Shakalafel keeps things beautifully simple with four Middle Eastern heavy hitters: falafel, chicken shawarma, shakshuka, and sabich. Everything comes dressed to impress with hummus, pickles, chopped cabbage salad, and a generous drizzle of tahini. You can choose the civilized route with a platter and fluffy yellow rice, or the more efficient method of stuffing everything into a warm pita so you can shove it all into your mouth at once. Highly recommend efficiency. If you like a little danger, add their green Moroccan hot sauce. It does not mess around.

I ordered the chicken shawarma platter. The chicken was tender, well-seasoned, and grilled with onions, then mixed into hummus and rice in a way that felt both comforting and deeply correct. I made sure not to share any with the local Kauai yard birds, who were circling like tiny, feathered food critics. Feeding them would have felt morally wrong, like Woodstock eating turkey at the end of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Thankfully, Shakalafel provides squirt bottles to keep the birds at bay, which is both effective and oddly empowering.

I also added a side of falafel, because the free sample marketing absolutely worked on me. We doubled down with a full falafel platter and a side of fresh-cut fries with garlic sauce. The fries were perfectly crisp, and the garlic sauce, which I normally avoid, was bright, fragrant, and shockingly polite. No lingering garlic breath, no regrets.

We did order a single pita for $3, which felt a little steep. I assumed it would come with the hummus we ordered and the platters, but it was explained that the base menu is designed to be gluten-free. Fair enough, but maybe make the pita an easier add-on. I guess it is… for $3.

We were genuinely thrilled we stopped. My mostly vegetarian family was especially happy to find something this delicious on an island that doesn’t always cater well to vegetarian menus.

Do yourself a favor and stop at Shakalafel as you pass through Kapaʻa on your way to or from Hanalei. Just be prepared to defend your food from birds and possibly your family, because no one will want to share.

Amazing experience at Shakalafel! The service was outstanding, and the food was top-notch. We had the falafel and the sabich, and both were incredibly fresh, authentic, and high quality. It’s hard to find such great flavors done so perfectly. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a delicious and satisfying meal with a friendly vibe!

There are plenty of excellent vegetarian options here. Since the menu focuses on Falafel and Sabich, it’s a paradise for vegetarians. Both dishes we tried were filling, fresh, and packed with flavor. It’s definitely one of the best spots in the area for a high-quality vegetarian meal

Best falafel west of the Mississippi probably the world. (Atleast better than turkey)

Crispy falafel soft from the inside made fresh. They offer free samples correction they insist on free samples. We tried the falafel plate which was really good. Even the hot sauce is extraordinary.

This food cart is a total win! The owner won my heart immediately by handing out a ‘sample’ falafel—aka the best form of customer service. We got the falafel pita sandwich and the chicken shawarma platter, and both disappeared from our plates a little too fast. The fries tasted homemade—like someone actually peeled a potato instead of just opening a freezer bag. Plenty of street parking right next to the carts and lots of seating. Highly recommend this spot—your taste buds will thank you!

We stumbled upon this cute area of food trucks and decided to get some shakalafel. He let us sample some falafel and it was delicious so I order the falafel platter. We also ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich and the fries. My falafel platter was great except the rice was a bit bland and cold. However the hummus and falafel tasted fresh and authentic. My friend said the chicken shawarma was good but a bit soggy at the bottom. The fries are a amazing though! It is a smaller portion but the spices and garlic sauce make up for it. Definitely check it out if you’re craving some Mediterranean flavors on the small island.

The falafel is insane! I love falafel and I’ve eaten some good, some ok and some bad, but this is next level! You walk up and they give you one to test then you’re hooked! I had the egg with stewed tomatoes and spinach and that was next level! Must have with the hot sauce! The guys there are super nice also!

One of the best food trucks we have been to. Service was great. The food was excellent. Recommend making spicy if you handle heat well.

The chicken schwarma sandwich had great flavor. Perfectly cooked. Messy but fabulous. The Sabich was so tasty. Not a ton of eggplant on there, but was fabulous. Would order both again for sure.

The fries were not crunchy at all, actually far from it. I probably wouldn’t get the fries again but if I did, get the garlic sauce!

Awesome! I got the skakshuka (spicy), my companions got the shabich and falafel with tahini. They make it fresh right on the spot which might take a few minutes but totally worth it.
