Reviews
Gosforth’s food scene just got a serious upgrade. Now under new ownership, it’s taking a massive initiative to transform the Indian culinary scene in Newcastle to bring authentic Indian favours to our doorstep.
We’ve lived in Gosforth for years, always on the lookout for a truly authentic Indian dining experience and after spotting a few delectable Instagram posts over this weekend, curiosity got the better of us—and wow, are we glad it did!
New Ownership, New Flavours
Now under the passionate leadership of Chanchal, a humble and charming new owner from India, the restaurant is embracing the rich diversity of Indian cuisine like never before. The kitchen is helmed by Chef Rohit, also from the north of India, whose culinary expertise includes training and working with top-tier hotels in India. His mastery of Indian flavours is unmistakable in every bite.
️ The Maharaja Thali Experience
We went all in with the Maharaja Thali (£79.99 including taxes)—a royal feast; a grand platter with a variety of curries, breads, and sides, including spring rolls, kebabs, mini samosas, poppadams and pickles.
What stood out was the distinct flavour of each dish, clearly crafted with different base sauces that’s as much a challenge as it is a celebration. The fluffy, soft naans were perfect, and the refreshing North Indian-style chaas (buttermilk) and mango lassi hit all the right notes.
And here’s the twist: if you finish the Thali solo in 1 hour, it’s completely free. A fun challenge for the brave-hearted! Unfortunately, we couldn’t – we all shared!
We also tried the Mushroom Tikka as a starter, and it was packed with flavour. The portion size was just right for sharing, and the mint sauce on the side was absolutely spot-on — fresh, creamy, and perfectly balanced.
To wash down that feast, we ordered Jaljeera (a popular North Indian drink made using cilantro, mint, and spices. It is cooling, appetizing, refreshing, and perfect to sip on hot summer days) and Limca, and instantly felt transported back to India. It’s rare to find these drinks on a UK menu, and they brought back memories of our time in India.
Indo-Chinese Delights
The Indo-Chinese menu is a revelation. The Indo-Drumsticks (For the Indians – think Chicken Lollipops) were bursting with flavour and took us straight to the bustling streets of Mumbai. As a surprise treat, we were served a complimentary Veg Manchurian, and honestly—it deserves a solid 10/10. From the flavours to the consistency, we could not fault it at all.
Warm Hospitality
The staff were just as memorable as the food. Sai, a lovely team member, made us feel right at home and encouraged us to explore more of the menu on our next visit. Meeting Chanchal himself was a highlight—his passion for bringing authentic Indian cuisine to Gosforth is truly inspiring.
Value for Money
We were a family of five—three adults and two kids—and our total bill came to £116 including service charge. For the quality, quantity, and experience, it was absolutely worth every penny.
If you’re in or around Gosforth and craving real Indian flavours, don’t let Shahe slip past your radar. It’s not just a meal—it’s a journey back to India, one plate at a time.
The food was mind blowing, so full flavour and took me back to India. We ordered the Honey Chilli Cauliflower, Mushroom Tikka, Steamed chicken momos and Veg fried schezwan rice. Every dish was scrumptious, presented gracefully and had very generous portions.
The menu options are so wide and varied that we were spoilt for choice. Ensures we will be visiting back very soon. The place looks beautiful and cosy with the new decor.
The service was exceptional – full of warmth and great conversation. Lucky the manager was excellent and knowledgeable. We were glad to meet the new owners and were very interested in knowing about their passion towards authentic Indian food and flavours.
All in all 10/10, definitely recommend!
First and foremost, the food is excellent. Everything was packed with flavour, clearly freshly prepared, and cooked to a really high standard. You can tell a lot of care goes into their dishes, and it genuinely stands out compared to many other places.
What truly sets Shahe apart, though, is the staff. Unfortunately, I was let down by an Uber Eats driver who falsely marked my order as delivered when it hadn’t arrived. This was extremely frustrating, but Shahe’s response was nothing short of outstanding. The team were so apologetic and visibly devastated that this had happened to a customer.
The manager in particular was incredibly friendly, kind, and helpful, going out of their way to support me and help resolve the situation. Their customer service was genuine and heartfelt, and it made a stressful situation much easier to deal with.
While the delivery issue was disappointing, it was not Shahe’s fault at all. Their food quality and customer care more than make up for it. I would absolutely recommend Shahe and will happily order from them again.
Upon enquiring my spice level and food preferences, Rohith suggested Rara Lamb along with Naan and Jeera rice.
The food was amazing; lamb both mince and pieces were well cooked and super tender!
Got some momos as well, it was yummy.
Indochinese noodles took me back to India
After a long time had some really good Indian food! Appreciate the chefs and everyone working here, will definitely visit again. ☺️
The Fish Pakora was excellent – crispy, flavorful, and cooked really well. Definitely a standout.
The Awadhi Chicken Biryani wasn’t anywhere close to an authentic biriyani, but the rice and chicken were both tasty on their own. The raita was refreshing and worked well as a side.
The Chole Bhature was a bit of a letdown. The Bhature were soft, fluffy, and delicious, but the Chole had an extremely strong clove flavor – it was overpowering and took away from the overall experience.
Would recommend the Fish Pakora for sure, and the biryani if you’re not expecting something traditional. Chole Bhature could be great if the Chole is tweaked.
The food was wonderful, ordered the Grand thali which allowed us to try multiple starters and 10 currys. Very delicious and left very very full!
I was excited to try your food after seeing it’s reviews but sadly I was disappointed a bit.
I ordered through Deliveroo on 22/09/25 and my order number is 8533
