Shady Side Tavern, located on Route 309 in Dallas, Pennsylvania, is a casual bar and grill featuring a wide assortment of alcoholic beverages along with bar-food favorites like pizza, hot subs, burgers, and more.
We arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m. and was hit with the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke. The dimly-lit bar was completely filled with patrons and ashtrays, and to the right of the entrance was a cigarette machine.
Walking past this relic, we entered the dining area, which featured a few high tables with bar stools. The room was also occupied by a shuffleboard, dart board, and video gambling machines.
We decided on some pizza with onions, and had to go to the bar to order. The bartender – who was very pleasant – took my order, telling me she would bring it out once it was ready.
The pizza consisted of 12 large, thick, pan-fried slices with plenty of diced onions and sauce. The pizza was heavy and the taste was average. The sauce was very acidic and the cheese wasn’t really distributed evenly, and would slide off the dough after a bite.
After finishing our meal, I went to the bar to pay. There was a bit of a wait, as the bar was filled with customers (in fact, it was standing room only in that section) and only one bartender available.We left the smoke-filled bar into some refreshing fresh air.
The Shady Side Tavern is a neighborhood dive bar and by no means a date night establishment. One goes there to drink, grab a bite to eat, and play pool, shuffleboard, or darts. Everyone there was enjoying themselves, but if you’re a non-smoker or allergic to cigarette smoke, this place would not be tolerable. Although I doubt I’ll return, it would be hospitable to those who enjoy having a few smokes, a few drinks, and a simple atmosphere. Back in my younger days, perhaps I would’ve been a repeat customer.

The food is so good! The pizza is the best. And the crispy wings are great. I highly recommend stopping here to order food! The service was good. And the food came out hot and fresh in a timely manner. They do allow smoking inside the bar, so just keep that in mind (that’s the only downside). Aside from that, it’s a great place to stop.

Usually for the past few years this pizza has been very delicious the last two times I’ve had it there the dough is not risen is very greasy uncooked but burnt I thought maybe the last time was just a fluke so I tried it again I’m not going back there again for pizza

Absolutely love this bar. One of few smoking bars left. The smoke has never been overwhelming. The pizza is the only pizza I’ve ever had that’s as good as pizza perfect, yet legitimately half the price.
Staff is amazing, free juke box nights, and the owner once covered the entire bars tabs when I was there.
Seriously though, even if a smoking bar isn’t your scene, treat yourself to take out on that fried pizza, you won’t regret it!!

Shady Side was really enjoyable, cheesesteak was excellent. Also got a Stromboli that was great as well. Staff was nice. Would definitely recommend and will absolutely be back. Definitely worth a try…

Friendly customers and staff, it’s a typical smoking bar with pool, darts, gaming machines and “pay for” music.
I bought a 6 cut fried pizza, to go, totally yummy! It wasn’t too smoky when I was there, but there was only about 10 to 15 people there. I do not like smoke but I stayed for about an hour and it wasn’t too bad. I’ll stop back on non crowed nights again and certainly get more pizza.
