Excellent food, great atmosphere, amazing service! Hard to highlight the best food as everything was exceptional! The home made gyoza was one of the best we’ve had, the okonomiyaki was just as good or even better than being in Japan with outstanding presentation), the sukiyaki was very tasty, the traditional shabu shabu was excellent, the coffee jelly with cream was light, not too sweet and perfectly made. Thank you to all the staff also for their excellent service which made the meal that much better!

Dining with The Davids
We’re Dining with The Davids—a local video series that celebrates the best food spots in the Coachella Valley. For this episode, we brought 12 of our “Taste Buds” to Shabu Shabu Zen in Rancho Mirage for a 10-course culinary adventure—and we were blown away.

First off, if you’ve never tried shabu shabu before, the name translates to “swish swish,” which perfectly captures the experience: you dip thinly sliced meats, seafood, and veggies into bubbling hot broth at your own table. It’s interactive, flavorful, and just plain fun.

Our top appetizer was the Okonomiyaki—a savory Japanese pancake loaded with cabbage, green onion, and pork belly, topped with a fried egg and bonito flakes. Crunchy, rich, and completely addictive.

For entrées, it was unanimous: the A5 Japanese Miyazaki Ribeye was the star. Melt-in-your-mouth perfection. But we also loved the vegetarian curry udon as a surprisingly bold alternative.

Dessert? Do not skip the coffee jelly. It’s like if jello and cold brew had a baby—topped with cream, light, not too sweet, and the perfect ending.

Staff were helpful, the vibe was cozy, and we left full and smiling.
Absolutely worth a visit. Follow @DiningWithTheDavids for more!

Very good. Small tables for 4 and all the veggies and protein. Very pricey even in elation. $145 for 2 people for a average size. Quality yes, but there isn’t a smaller price to start and then can add. Like $22 then do another $24 if need

Not sure why we waited 10 years plus to try this little gem.
Great food quality, so flavorful!
We very much enjoyed the Shabu experience.
So many interesting appetizers.
The meats, fantastic.
Broths were so good.

Truly an authentic Japanese shabu shabu place without being in Japan. The service was amazing and our waitress Louisa was so helpful and friendly.

The food was fantastic and perfectly seasoned and delicious. It was so amazing we came back the next day to other a few more things.

I was very lucky to have been introduced to the owner and her husband through a close friend and I am so lucky and grateful for their hospitality on the golf course and off. I feel like I’m back in Japan and I have never left.

The coffee jelly dessert was impeccable and a great way to end the night. This place is a must go to if you’re in the desert area. But make a reservation since it’s so popular.

Interesting to find a shabu shabu place in the middle of the desert. The service was good, but could improve it bit. After we ordered, for the next 29-25 minutes no one stopped by and ask if we needed anything. The food, for the most part, was decent. The quality of the beef itself was slightly disappointing. We ordered both the regular and the premium, and both were just okay. We also had the octopus tapa and the sea bass tapa. They were pretty good, but the eggplant that came with the sea bass was well prepared and its texture was very good. We also had a few hot sake. They were excellent as well

Great Shabu Shabu place and they also have Sukiyaki. Good quality beef and freshly prepared vegetables. Mostly authentic style and preparation. Cat pleasant service also. Many other reviews suggested the portion is too small but I think it is actually pretty good portions. Very nice quiet atmosphere also. Not cheap but well worth it.

We met Miho while playing golf together. We were excited to try her restaurant the first time and we have already been back! This small quaint restaurant packs a large punch with amazing dishes straight from her grandmother’s recipes. We have explored different meat options and hot pot flavours. We are trying different tapas — although the chicken karaage is amazing. The food is fresh and flavourful. I can’t wait to go back.

This place goes above and beyond in customer service & food!

As soon as we walked through that door, we were taken care of and our needs were met. The employee pulled our chairs out and sat us down in a matter of seconds. It was our 1st time, so step by step they explained the menu and what to expect. They also gave us a quick trivia about the sake, meats and what Shabu is.

The broth was amazing! The meat was like eating a piece of heaven! The veggies were so crunchy and fresh! The noodles were so soft!

The waitress came to give us more napkins and rice, she politely waited out of frame because she saw we were shooting a video of the food. They removed our dirty dishes quickly, brought us more water without asking, asked us if we needed anymore broth, noodles, veggies, rice and etc.

At the end, as we were walking out the door, they all thanked us for coming in and one of the employees ran after us to give us a sample of the handmade toffee.

Overall, it was the best restaurant experience ever and the best food ever! I will recommend this place to everyone I know and, of course, come again!
