Have you checked out the Shabu Shabu Hot Pot at Nani Mau …

Overall, I would rate it a 8/10. Amazing atmosphere, the employees seemed happy to be there, and the food was good! There were a few problems …

We arrived right at opening, 530pm. So no waiting. But lots of seats so seems unlikely there would ever be much of a wait.
Beautiful open air garden setting with super friendly waitstaff. Everything was very clean. I ordered the combo meat and seafood. Probably the best deal since you get a full order of the meat and the seafood combo, for only $10 more. Went back to the veggie bar twice for the all you can eat stuff, it was all super fresh and clean. The ramen noodles was my favorite though. They have spices and sauces to you make your broth as spicy or however you like. Full bar too! But we only had beers. Definitely gonna go back sometime soon!

Amazing food and service at a scenic location. The portion size is very generous: I got the seafood plate and had several huge prawns, 2 giant crab legs and clams and mussels and oysters as well. Their website is worded weirdly, but you don’t need reservations, you can just walk in. Well worth a drive to Hilo!

The food here was very average. Semi-outdoor seating makes all the food trays covered with insects. Priced, the price first made me think it was an all-you-can-eat place, but instead, you only get three small plates of meat, and each only contains 5-6 thin slices.

However, the owner was nice and talkative. Given there is not much food option in the Big Island, this place is still worth a visit if you crave hotpot.

Great place, lots of fun! The $45 (3 meat choices) was plenty. The sauce bar was yummy and they have a good assortment of vegetables. They only have 2 broth choices but with the sauce bar you can add garlic, chili oil, sesame, shoyu, etc. to make it to your taste. It came to $118 with tip for two people. Staff was very friendly. Will be going again!

Love, love, love this place! What a welcome addition to Hilo! Ordered the pork, beef combo. The meats were served to the table. Buffet with plenty vegetables, glass noodle, ramen noodle and tofu self serve. Sesame sauce, chili, garlic, various other sauces and oils to choose from. Meats and vegetables were fresh, service was prompt and friendly. I cannot recommend this spot highly enough to anyone who frequents the usual Eastside eateries.

The only reason why I’m giving this a one star is because of the service, otherwise it would be a zero. There are CATS in the restaurant! I’m severely allergic. I came here to have a nice dinner with my family for my birthday, yet instead I got lots of sneezing and itchy eyes. I think it’s disgusting that there are cats in the restaurant. They beg for your food and won’t leave you alone. Also, the dishes put out to use weren’t clean! There was oil all over the bowls, pieces of seaweed on the spoons, and the plates were also wet. Also, there are ants and mosquitoes EVERYWHERE!! I found multiple gnats in the vegetables they were serving; they were even in my food. I will NEVER be coming back. This place is so unsanitary.

I want to preface this by saying my husband would rate our overall experience as 4.5/5 and I would give it a straight 5/5.

So we decided to go for dinner for my birthday to try it out for the first time. The atmosphere was lovely. Once the sunset, the ambiance was great. I wasn’t paying attention to their tv monitor they had playing above the sauces but that was on.

Now you get seated and the waitress brings you a menu to look over. We had our one year old with us and she set us up with a high chair at the table. I was a little worried he might turn on his hot plate, but thankfully he didn’t. They were very patient with our son when he started throwing food on the ground. Saints all of them.

The waitress explained the menu and sauces to us. How to make our sauce and said everything was AYCE along the bar. She made my sauce for me, which unfortunately I didn’t like so I had to make a whole new bowl for myself and it ended up being much better. I got the meat with slices of beef and chicken and pork meatballs. My husband got the meat and seafood combo with slices of beef, lamb, and pork meatballs. You only get 3 choices but you can ala carte more meat if you want. Honestly it looked like it wasn’t a lot but once we got into it OMG it was a lot.

They had bread and butter, rice, sauces you make yourself, water, fruits and veggies and two different noodles for your broth. The only fruits tonight were orange and I think star fruit. You could grab any utensils you needed and anything you could possibly need.

I had the mixed bone broth and adding the ramen noodles to it was amazing. My husband had the spicy broth. While it’s not a lot of meat, you can supplement that with so many veggies. We were absolutely stuffed afterwards.

The food was great. I might try the beef meatballs next time. The service was great, they had a little cart next to the table that we used to put all our dirty dishes as they stacked up to clear the table. They had a nice variety of alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic drinks. We didn’t get a dessert menu but that’s alright, we were too full for dessert.

I wish we had gone for lunch so we could walk the garden after but alas we missed out. My husband’s gripe was they ran out of rice early. They didn’t start out service with a full pot of rice. I suspect it was the leftover rice from lunch service. I’m not sure if they made more as they hadn’t brought it out by the time we left. And he had two mussels with his seafood tray, one large and one small, and the larger one had a gritty texture he didn’t care for. Otherwise, he had a good meal.

We will definitely be going again, however, at $112 (meat meal, combo meal, 2 sodas, plus tax), it might be awhile before we go back. Definitely a special occasion kind of place but totally worth it.

Terrible experience – totally not worth it!
This place is a scam. It’s not even all you can eat, and the portions are tiny.

I paid $45, and all the seafood was frozen, not fresh at all.

The other dishes were plain and unimpressive — honestly, you’d get a much better meal with a $9 poke bowl somewhere else.

Would never recommend. Total rip-off.

Nestled in the back corner of Hilo at the Nani Mau gardens is a great hot pot experience. We had a bigger group that had to be sat at 2 tables next to each other, but this did not detract from the experience. Staff was awesome as we had several first timer “hot pot” diners and they went through the entire menu and process with them. Great broths, fun do it yourself sauce and veggie bar, and most of all delicious final results as you combine everything together. Spicy broth isn’t crazy over the top like at some places but you can easily ramp it up with the sauce bar. Can’t wait to go back!

Lovely little spot. Never been to a hot pot before, but went with family who recommended it to me. It was a very different dining experience than I’m used to, but was absolutely delicious. Fantastic selection of meats and veggies, lovely scenery with the gardens, and friendly staff. I hope to see them continue to grow the business 🙂
