The freshest vegetables for the dishes. The lettuce was cool and crisp, the tomatoes plump, and the beets tender.
The shrimp salad has so much shrimp and is so tasty and tender. Perfect complement to the cool, crisp vegetables.
The mushrooms weren’t as sautéed as much as I like them to be but still tasty. The side salad was surprisingly stellar. Usually as a side, the salad gets little thought. This side salad had all the vegetables I described and incredibly yum. I had the loganberry cider on tap and it went well with the burger and salad.

We had an enjoyable lunch here. It was a beautiful sunny day with views of the river. Our waitress was the best! The Hungarian mushroom soup was to die for. It’s the soup of the day on Wednesdays. Their menu had lots of options from fish & chips, shrimp, burgers, and salads. Great outdoor seating area. Pool tables are available and bar seating if you choose. Our food arrived nice and hot with generous portions.

I guess it depends on what you’re coming here for. We came for breakfast which they only serve on weekends from 10 to noon. There was only one server/busser, but she was awesome. We had a good view of the river. But this is a bar. It’s not a restaurant. Minors are not allowed. And the building is very run-down. But if you’re just looking for a nice place to chill out and look at the river, have a few drinks, play a slot game, play some pool–this might be a good spot for you. It’s pretty small inside. There’s lots of parking. It’s wheelchair accessible. As far as being a place to eat, it’s pretty subpar. But our omelettes were excellent, as were the hashbrowns and sourdough. But it’s kinda hard to mess that up, right? Anyway, this is a bar first and foremost. And I guess it’s a positive thing that they serve breakfast, because most bars probably wouldn’t do that! My dad got the two-egg breakfast, and he thought his eggs were done perfectly.

3 of us had lunch there. All had fish and chips. Fish cooked perfect. Fries were crispy on the outside tender in the middle. Cole Slaw was good. Prices were fair. Service was helpful. Restrooms clean. View of Columbia River from our booth. What more could you want from a casual lunch? Go there, it won’t break the bank and you will leave there full.

Everything went wrong with this place except the view. We chose the Sextant because the restaurant on Hayden island was experiencing technical difficulties due to a power outage. We were specifically looking for outdoor seating because it was such a warm and beautiful day. When we arrived the sign told us to seat ourselves. We found our initial seats on the lower patio. We then moved because of a loud an obnoxious group of drunk folks having a great time. All good in that respect. We are cool with people having fun. We just moved to a different area. Well, once we moved we became seemingly invisible to our server. She was so busy with the big group of drunk kids that she wasn’t worried about serving us. Thankfully another waitress came to our rescue and got drinks started for us. She then let our waitress know that she had taken care of that! We then waited approximately 20 minutes longer for our server to finally take our order. Without an apology or even an offering of glasses of water on such a warm day (it was 91 that day) she finally asked what we wanted. My wife ordered the Halibut Fish and Chips and I ordered the California Crispy Chicken Burger. That came with guacamole and onions. I ordered without the onions. When we received our meals after another 15 minutes or so, our server didn’t provide napkins, silver ware or water for the meals. I actually had to get up and ask the bartender for two glasses of water and after searching around on my own I found some napkins. She brought me a regular Crispy Chicken Burger and that was two dollars less on the menu. When I brought this to her attention, she did fix the bill but offered no sort of discount or anything to make her mistake right. I’m sure with better service this place would have been a whole different and better experience. Our server was horrible and it was very apparent that she was overwhelmed and not good at multi tasking. This was a one time try for us. We don’t live to far away but Im not sure it would be worth the retry. Super disappointed!

We went here on a Saturday specifically to try their clam chowder. I understand that there are great variations in the PNW that have all sorts of deliciousness in them like crabs and salmon and such, but sometimes you just want clam chowder. This place has got it down. Also, service was excellent. Will go back.

I love this place. The drinks are amazing. We ordered Moscow mules, and they were some of the best I’ve had in Portland.
The fresh ginger really gave it an extra boost.
Our bartender was just so friendly and warm to talk to.
Our server was attentive. Fish and chips tasted fresh and hot. I really liked that atmosphere and variety of people that go there too.
There’s anywhere from young couple’s, to bar scene crowd, to older families and singles. I would definitely come back.

The Sextant is a great place to enjoy a meal on the Columbia River. Great service, quality food and a exceptional River and Nautical environment. Lunch for 2 today with adult beverages and a good tip for less than 50 bucks.
