My boyfriend and I were told that Sekisui in Midtown was the most authentic Japanese restaurant here in Memphis. When we visited and I had to use the bathroom and immediately saw a bidet toilet, I knew that we were told the truth. Besides the Japanese styled bathroom, the food immediately reminded me of Japan. Especially the menu and the way of ordering. We first started with the wasabi shumai and the yakitori, something I don’t typically see at Japanese restaurants. The shumai was amazing. I was glad that the wasabi was actually infused into the shumai and not within it, because when you take a bite you immediately feel the spice up your nose. The yakitori was also incredible, though a little too much sauce for my liking. The real winners were the sushi and entrée. We ordered salmon, mackerel and white tuna. The mackerel was definitely my favorite, I just love how salty the fish is. I ordered the yakiniku while my boyfriend ordered the kushiyaki steak. I am definitely biased, but I loved the yakiniku steak. It was incredibly flavorful, with the soy sauce marinated into the steak and vegetables underneath. With a side of white rice, it balanced it all out. My boyfriend’s kushiyaki steak was a little tough to eat, at least in my opinion, but he really enjoyed it. We also loved the selection of Japanese beets here as well. Will definitely come back when I am craving Japanese food again!

A true midtown Memphis staple. In addition to the relaxing, family-friendly atmosphere, Jon and Sean always deliver amazing service, and the menu is expansive and excellent! So many sushi rolls to choose from.

On this particular visit, I ate 1/3 of my body weight in vegetable tempura and followed it up with an incredible vegetarian roll, and washed down with Junmai Gingo sake. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great Japanese restaurant!

This place was amazing. The price is well worth the quality of food. Definitely will be coming here again! I only wish I could give more than 5 stars on everything!

Pretty good sushi, pretty expensive , but lots of options. Service wasn’t the best. Music was extremely annoying the whole time we wanted to leave because the music makes you agitated. Insulting hip hop/gangster music doesn’t give any restaurant a nice atmosphere.

Ive eaten sushi all over the country and SekiSui midtown remains my favorite. Always a solid choice. The Jacksonville, Margot, house cucumber, and Debra roll. Nigiri regular and Uni(sea Urchin) nigiri. Miso soup and house salad.

Adding more pics from another amazing meal.

Great place to eat sashimi in Memphis. And also daily special nigiris seem to be great. I’ll go there again for them.

In my first visit I tried Chirashi lunch special, which comes with a variety of sashimi on top of typical sour sushi rice.

Wow! Glad I finally came here. Chirashi was a huge portion with quality fish and with some good rice. Really didn’t need to get the appetizer pyramid because the chirashi was so large, but that was also very good; I ate both with no regrets. Dessert was also delicious and they have good vanilla and green tea ice cream to go with the fried banana. Excited to go back after a 100 mile bike ride and eat nonstop. Very nice waitress and staff, A++. 5 stars for local sushi joint with very good sushi, quality fish, nice people, chill vibe, comforting interior. Not a trendy upscale place if that is what you’re in the mood for. I don’t know if that even exists in Memphis (?)

The health department is involved, but the kitchen in this place is disgusting. One of their own employees finally alerted the health department and they were fired and threatened by owners. The image below is 100% real and one of many disgusting peeks into the disgusting conditions hidden from customers.
