Scout conveniently sits in the heart of Oakhurst Village, with its “Main Street, U.S.A.” charm. The restaurant and bar harken a sense of Americana, speaking to nostalgia for idealized small town life and a simpler bygone time. This cultural heritage is closely tied to the fare served, embracing a creative take on American cuisine and crafted cocktails that showcase the use of local and regional products, but also emphasize authenticity, transparency, and quality. These efforts echo Scout’s curious passion for nature and the bounty it has to offer.

The salmon bites were okay. They were drenched in bang bang sauce. I ordered the braised short rib. The portion was overwhelming too large but instead of short ribs, it was as giving pot roast. I had to ask for salt and pepper. The meat was dry and unflavored. The gravy and mashed potatoes was okay. My husband enjoyed his butter. The star of the show was the salted caramel brownie. It may be the best brownie I’ve ever had in my life. Served hot and so gooey. It was so delicious.
The food came out really quick.
Total bill was $117 for 2 before tip. We will not return.
We had our company Christmas dinner and party there, and a few of us arrived early to grab drinks at the bar. I really liked the L‑shaped setup and the impressive selection of spirits—especially the bourbon and tequila lineup. I even spotted a bottle of Fortaleza (IYKYN)
Samantha, our bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly knew all things- cocktail. Some folks started with gin drinks, I went with champagne, and everything was mixed perfectly. Note the champagne was not on the menu so you have to ask. Another member had a virgin orange juice, pineapple, and agave drink. The feedback all around was excellent.
For appetizers, the team ordered the fried calamari and the baked Sophia. I didn’t try the calamari, but everyone said it was tender and not chewy—shoutout to the chef. I did try the baked Sophia, which comes with olive oil, baked cream cheese, tomatoes, and herbs. That one I can confidently recommend as a starter.
Once the whole team arrived, we moved to our reserved table and were taken care of by Monique. She seemed a little overwhelmed at first with such a large group, but she found her rhythm and shared her favorite dishes with us. As a group, we covered almost the entire menu—red meat, chicken, shrimp, salads, pasta, you name it. I went with the braised short rib Diane, mashed potatoes, and swapped the carrots for asparagus. It was delicious and definitely enough for leftovers. I heard great things about the Springer Chicken, the Creole Shrimp Pasta, and the Steak Frites. The Ribeye and potatoes got mixed reviews, especially the roasted potatoes, so maybe approach that one with caution.
For me, the highlight of the night was the holiday décor and lighting. Every table was thoughtfully decorated, and the Christmas tree was charming, warm, and welcoming.
Overall, I’d absolutely recommend the food and the cocktails. Just know this isn’t your everyday Chili’s or Applebee’s—you’re looking at around $50 per person.
My only real critique is the “old home” smell inside, like stepping into grandma’s house with the vintage furniture, antenna TV, and rotary phone. The smell was distinct and lingered throughout. The smell was one of the reasons Cracker Barrel got dropped from the rotation. Other than that, it’s a great spot for a small gathering or a cozy date night in Oakhurst.
I think the meals were all around impressive, and the waiter sealed the deal when she suggested the cookie dessert with a burnt marshmallow and ice cream top. it’s on the sweeter side of course, but it was so so satisfying. the cookie is baked in the same cast iron skillet the shrimp dip comes in, and it was perfectly soft and crisp with a slight butter glaze at the bottom of the cookie. the drink were great, the food, and the atmosphere. my friends ordered the shrimp and grits, the burger, and the corn beef hash breakfast. all looked lovely, and they enjoyed it. though the burger my friend said seems more of a smash burger style, she would have preferred more of a medium burger with more bite. I think you truly can’t go wrong with a cocktail and an appetizer here, granted that was my order. however, the waiter said they get a lot more traffic, though it was quite frequented for brunch even though the location is a bit more inconspicuous, during their dinner time. be aware that they do close the kitchen from 2:30-3:30 to prepare between brunch and dinner.
update – I have been back, at least five times. it’s nice little hidden gem in Decatur where it’s greater!
The place itself is rustic and cool inside. It’s was dim, relaxing, and inviting. We were sat in a room off to the side for more privacy. Our server was world-class. We tried the brussel sprouts and pretzel bites first. Charred perfectly and the cheese that accompanied the wheat pretzels was creamy deliciousness. Everyone was happy with their cocktails as they were very well-crafted.
The main dishes and very fair portions were the star. The tender brisket is a must! The chicken and waffles were full of flavor, but could have used one more tenderloin as it was mostly waffle. Everyone else was pleased with their meals, including the steak and pork chops. I ended it off with the bread pudding and could not have left happier.
I’ve tried several food items on their brunch menu and can honestly say they have something for every body. My 8YO loves their French toast(I mean how can you NOT when they give you a good bit of challah bread?! )
I highly recommend this place for early morning dates, family brunch, a friend meet up or just a place to wander around. It’s located on a very walkable area that is often busy.
The restaurant emphasizes “quality produce, innovative takes on American cuisine and cocktails crafted from local and regional suppliers”. Boasting an ever-changing, seasonal menu that sources locally and sustainably, the restaurant promises a proper gastronomic experience all the way from amuse-bouche to desserts (via cocktails, of course).
Speaking of cocktails, if you’d like your libations to be forever twinned with your celebrations (yes, I meant that to rhyme…), then Scout offers an optional ‘Custom Cocktail’ option, billed at $250, for up to two guests, which includes a private consultation with their Bar Manager or GM, during which they will create a custom Craft Cocktail to your taste and specifications, to be offered during your event. This option is all inclusive and includes custom Beverage Menus for your event.
Scout is located in a renovated building that was constructed over a hundred years ago in 1915, so it has character and charm to spare – the dining room is bathed in natural light on three sides, mainly from the wall of windows facing West Hill St, just off Oakhurst Square.
Couples can get hitched in the simple garden in front of the restaurant, and then head to the deck patio for cocktails. There’s space for couples photos and guests to roam in the grounds out front, as well as plenty of seating, weather permitting.
Seating-wise, Scout has multiple areas – from large tables that seat 16, to booths that fit 6 and 4 people, so there are plenty of options for seating your guests. There’s also ample space for dancing shenanigans as the night approaches! Oh, and when you go, try the meat and cheese board. You can thank me later.
