On May 8th, 2009, Scott Umscheid entered his first KCBS BBQ competition in his home town of Platte City, MO. With a team of his brother-in law-Josh Hulett, Josh’s Dad Roger Hulett, and a great friend of the family, Tyler Fadler. It was during the 14th annual Platte City BBQ cook off held at the famous Basswood Resort. Scott’s responsibility was chicken, so he did some research and several practice cooks before turning in his chicken box, Saturday, May 9th at noon. Fast forward to our first ever results ceremony, a few hours later, and we probably had 30 plus people there to see what the judges thought about our first ever BBQ. Chicken results come first and the KCBS rep started with #10, then #9 and so forth all the way down to #2 and we s

I paired that with their pulled pork, which was next-level all on its own—tender, rich, and exactly what KC BBQ should be. Then I put my trust back in the team and let them choose my sides. Zero regrets. Cheesy Potatoes that were pure comfort food perfection, and a Turkey & Sausage Gumbo that tasted like it belongs on the competition circuit.
If you’re ever in the Northland, this is a must-stop, competition-level KC BBQ spot. And with its close proximity to the airport, do yourself a favor—volunteer to drive your family, friends, neighbors, anyone to the airport. It’s the perfect excuse to put yourself in the neighborhood for a truly memorable next meal.
The ribs didn’t just fall off the bone, they surrendered. Tender, juicy, and smoked to perfection, they needed nothing but hands and a smile. The bark had that slight snap, the meat pulled clean, and every bite carried real depth. The brisket was just as impressive. I usually put Texas brisket on a pedestal, but this Kansas City brisket was right up there with the best of them. Moist, tender, and full of flavor that melted into each bite.
The potato salad was extraordinary, cool and creamy with just enough tang to brighten everything else on the plate. And the BBQ beans? Next level. Smoky, savory, lightly sweet, and thick in all the right ways. They weren’t just a side dish, they were part of the main event.
The atmosphere feels relaxed and genuine. No gimmicks, no show. Just good food made with skill and patience. You can feel the care in the kitchen, and you can taste it even more.
If I could change one thing, just one, I’d keep the doors open later into the night. This is exactly the kind of place you want to end your day with. Warm, unhurried, real.
Scott’s Kitchen is easily worth the stop. And the return.
Indoor seating is limited with only a few tables and close together. Ample outdoor seating..
I did not use the restroom because the tables were all full and you would have to walk sidewise to get past to get in the door. Doable if you had to go.
Menu is posted on the walls. Those taking orders explain items.
Cleanliness is suitable. The bottles on the tables definitely need a cleaning or replaced.
Food ordered this trip
Turkey with cheesy potatoes and beans. Turkey is by far my favorite thing on the menu. I wouldn’t expect that but it is smoky, tender and not dried out.
My husband ordered brisket and chicken leg quarter with gumbo and chili. He liked it all stating the chicken was moist and smoky. The brisket was a little on the dry side but had good flavor. Sides were ok but nothing special,
I tried the beans, chili and gumbo and they were very close in flavor. You knew it was chili due to chili powder.
The sampler has all the meats, plus all four sides, and pickles! It’s honestly a bargain at $50 for 2, we’ll easily have another meal plus a piece in leftovers.
We’ll definitely be back!
When I return next time I will try the Ghost pepper sausage burrito!!!!
Definitely give this place a try, tell them Pedro sent you and maybe I’ll get a free burrito on my next visit?
