Landmark spot for signature beef on weck & rib-sticking German-American fare in old-fashioned digs.

The delicious roast beef in Schwabl’s Beef on Weck is juicy, piled high and hand-carved slightly thick to your specification: rare, medium rare or medium. It’s not the thinly-sliced, traditional WNY version by any means, but it’s definitely worth the trip and potential wait (the restaurant is relatively small).
The server told me their salt-laced, caraway-studded kummelweck roll is made fresh daily. The au jus was generous and savory, and it pooled nicely into the roll for reasonably perfect sogginess. In my opinion, the key ingredient will always be the horseradish. Here it’s thick and just the right shock to the senses! What I wasn’t expecting were the tasty sides. The old-school German potato salad, clean crisp coleslaw (not a speck of mayonnaise), pickled beets and pickles all complemented the sandwich solidly.
Dressed in a white chef’s smock, the owner seemed quite attentive about quality as he carved roast beef with careful precision by the bar. We were talked into trying a Tom & Jerry cocktail. Highly recommend! The warm drink has apparently been a Buffalo area winter tradition for over 100 years.

This place was amazing. Friendly, and the food exceeded the hype! If their special of the day happens to include potato pancakes, these were amazing. And the beef on weck was the best I’ve had. I’ve gone to other places and always thought “man, this could use some au jus” but I figured that’s just an out of towner’s thinking and a faux pas to request. Nope. They have it. And it’s amazing. Did I say amazing?!

We had a fantastic mid-week lunch here. It definitely gets busy so come early if you can. This historic location has great old-school bar atmosphere, like a scene out of It’s A Wonderful Life, which to me is a huge compliment. I’m so glad we came in the winter while some Christmas decor was still up. We of course had the beef on weck and it was absolutely as good as everyone says; thicker slices but still incredibly tender and on a weck roll with plenty of salt. We also got their seasonal Tom & Jerry boozy drink and it did not disappoint! It was my first ever and wow am I glad I tried it out. Warming, comforting and just so tasty. This was our first time here and we’ll definitely be going back!

I’ve heard a lot about this place and wanted to try the a Tom & Jerry hot cocktail, it didn’t disappoint expect for the price..Listed $8.79 bill $12.50. Tried the Potato Pancake appetizer with sour cream/applesauce, was only fair. My Hungarian Goulash had a tasty paprika flavor I remember my mom’s having. Beef Tenderloin was indeed tender. Compliments to that dish but my friends Roast Beef sandwich was “unchewable”. That was taken off our bill but still $80 good thing… I don’t think I’ll be back anytime soon. To many other places to try.

Anyone who has a bad thing to say about Schwabl’s is out of their mind. What a joy. A sandwich so good it brought a tear to my eye! Had a lovely solo trip here after arriving in Buffalo a day earlier than my crew for the game. Will be raving about this beef on weck to anyone who will listen 🙂

Been here a few times before when we visit Buffalo and even though it’s overpriced, we’ve enjoyed it for the history and experience. That ended when we were in town for the Bills game.
My wife and I ordered 2 sandwiches with 2 sides each. Polite waiter brought our order but the glasses were so small I wasn’t able to mix my Crystal Light mix in my drink so I went to the car to get a water bottle.
Old grumpy grandpa comes over and says I need to take my bottle back to my car because “we sell water here” and no outside drinks allowed. Are you serious? We’re paying $55 for 2 sandwiches and sides and you’re REALLY going to say that???
I pretty much told him NO way and call the cops if you want. He said “well you can just leave now”. I told him I’ll leave after we eat our sandwiches. You can charge me for a bottle of water if you want. (I wasn’t paying for it anyway).
Well, somebody must have talked some sense into the old guy since they didn’t charge me for the water. That said, that grumpy old fart needs to retire before he ruins your business more than he is doing!!!
NEVER going back and telling all our friends to STAY AWAY forever!!!!!

Roast beef not as good as it used to be!! Ordered 3 roast beef dinners, a fish fry (she said that was good), and chicken finger sandwich. Roast beef was nothing special. Service was great, but prices are expensive! $8 for a bottle of beer?? 5 dinners & 6 beers cost us $250!!!

Hand sliced and perfectly cooked beef on a kimmelweck roll that added the perfect amount of salt to the dish. If I’m ever in Buffalo again, this will be my first stop. The old school vibe made the whole experience perfect.

Been going here for over 40 years, moved to Florida and this was always our first stop from the airport. This past Saturday, Sept 6th, was the worst. Roast beef was great but not sure you could classify the roll as a kimmelweck roll! Huge disappointment not anything like we have ever gotten there before. Not sure if we will return next year. The fries looked old not fresh and crisp.

We came here as a recommendation by family. Grandparents came here every Wednesday for the soup and sandwich. It did not disappoint. Everything was great, would definitely return. We had liver dumpling soup, chili, pretzel sticks, turkey dinner, beef sandwich special, chicken salad, kids tenders and fries. My favorite was the liver dumpling soup and the cheese dip with the pretzel sticks.
