As the oldest restaurant and beer garten in Texas, Scholz has been a standard in the Austin community for over 150 years. We were honored to take over operations of this amazing piece of history in June of 2017. We are proud to be the enduring social gathering place for our community and plan on bringing our unique, traditional hospitality to Austin for many years to come. You can view our menu @scholzgarten.com and please view our calendar page as neighboring event spaces may impact our food/beverage selections as well as service style.
Over 20 German Beers on draft, the first operators to house liquor at Scholz in over 150 years (including German spirits) and added a great blend of German traditional offerings with Texas fare.
Packed during football games, this famed spot features beer & burgers in a shaded outdoor setting.

Sholz Garten is our go-to spot before concerts at the Moody Center, and it never disappoints. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and kick off the night.
The bratwurst are always great, the pretzels are solid, and the food comes out quickly — which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to make it to a show on time. And let’s be honest… the beer is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying it inside the Moody Center.
It’s an easy walk to the venue, and there’s always a fun, lively crowd getting ready for the concert. If you’re heading to a show, this is the perfect pre-concert stop.

Oldest beer garden in Austin. The place is very spacious, it has an outdoor area seen in traditional beer gardens (the biggest area), an indoor dining area, and the bar area. The former two have waiters taking orders while the bar area you can pick up the menu and order at the bar itself. You have an extensive choice of import and domestic beers, but I strongly urge to try the imported German drafts. They are authentic and delicious, perfectly representing the world-renown taste of German beer. The food isn’t that far behind, authentic German rolls and sausages were a delight. Water, at least at the bar area, is complimentary. Be aware that during events near the area makes parking very difficult to find so plan ahead. Definitely check out this place for a piece of authentic German history.

the three wurst on the wurst board were so overcooked, dry, hard and taste all the same – tasteless. perhaps they were already cooked and left in a warmer. The pretzel bread was excellent and fresh. The wienerschnitzel was good, but my goodness, it was paper thin, I couldn’t taste the veal. Spaetzle, they were limb and soggy, tasted like they have boiled the noodles earlier then just pan fried to heat it up.
For a restaurant that’s been there for over 100 years, they don’t have any pride in their heritage. Perhaps because the Restaurant is big, they have shortcut all their dishes. great displays but no substance.

Came for happy hour. Had a beer and a Cherry limeade cocktail. Drinks were great. The stars of the show were the appetizers. We shared a personal pretzel that came with a mustard, a fantastic garlic butter, and a beer cheese. This was fantastic. The Reuben waffle fries were delectable and great for sharing with the table. Would come again!

Awesome beer garden! I love this spot. The food is excellent as well as the service. The back patio is lovely. It fills up very fast. If there is a concert in the evening then they do a limited menu.

Got to check out this cute German Restaurant / hang out … loved the eating area out back but it was closed for a party … the vintage inside was cool as well. It was really loud with some tables very close together but the waiter was great and moved us to another area that was a little quieter (however it was still loud and a hard to hear my freind). The restaurant vibe was fun and nice for big parties. The giant pretzel was amazing and so delicious- a must get! We shared beef tips, the Greek goddess salad and the hot potato. All was good. The beef tips were more “gravy” and a few bit sized pieces of beef, so I wouldn’t order that again but everything else was great. The wait staff was friendly and nice when you could get their attention. We got our drinks but no check backs for refills (even on water). After our meal was delivered the waiter was not back to check on us, refill drinks, never brought extra napkins requested – staff was around but never made eye contact with our table, stopped to check and could not hear our “excuse me” when leaving the table next door…. we had to catch a show, so we got up and went to the bar to ask to pay for our meal … it was busy, but it would have been easily possible to drop napkins, water and the bill after delivering the food. Would try it again, but the service side could use a step up. Would be a great place to grab beers and hang out on the patio … overall good and clearly a fun spot – but needed more follow up on the table service.

Easily best pretzel in town plus the spatzle and chicken sandwich were absolutely killer. Great beer selection and tons of seating. Parking could be a tad awkward on the street but we lucked into no issues. Highly recommend for tailgating as well!

This place blew my mind. Not only was the service impeccable, but they were so friendly and really helped each other out. They were overly accommodating. The food was INCREDIBLE. I have never had applesauce that was better tasting. I would love to be able to purchase some!!! The jagerschnitzel was delicious and the whole plate complimented each other. I would be happy to return the next time I am in Austin!

Considered the oldest restaurant in Texas, Scholz Garten in Austin is a historic gem, established in 1866 by German immigrant August Scholz as a saloon and beer garden. Starting as a hub for the growing German community, it evolved into a cultural landmark, purchased by the Austin Saengerrunde in 1908, who still own it today. Recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and added to the National Register in 1979, it’s survived wars, Prohibition, and Austin’s rapid growth. Once a spot for concerts and political gatherings, it now blends tradition with modern vibes, offering German fare and UT game-day energy. A must-visit for history lovers! And the pretzels are great!
