I met an old friend during the holidays and we had a quiet, wide ranging discussion to really catch up over a few Blue Commet drafts and a few appetizers. Our waitress was just perfect; never rushing us despite our delayed review of the menu as we had a couple of years of updating.

The atmosphere was quiet and easy to hear each other during our lunch. The food selections were plentiful, and we were each happy with the salad, chowder, and crab cake.

It had been several years since my last time at Scarlet Oak. I was impressed with the decor, the professionals in each section of the restaurant, and the overall feel. I’m already planning to schedule a nice dinner with my wife – Scarlet Oak has never been in our regular restaurant rotation before. We may have to rethink our list.

Years ago, we attended a milestone birthday with local friends, had client meetings, and a quiet date night with my wife at Scarlet Oak. As stated, today was a nice reminder.

If I could give TEN stars I would! ⭐️

If you are looking to host a private event, especially a small wedding, look no further!!
Katie and her team are absolutely incredible! We had a January 30 wedding reception planned here. But less than 24 hours before, our outdoor ceremony site was no longer an option because of the weather. (Cue PANIC) Katie immediately took control, offered solutions, and made our wedding day the most magical, stress-free day. I truly felt like I didn’t have to worry about a thing. The entire staff even came in early and changed their whole day around just to accommodate. We ended up having our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all in their private room upstairs Complete with the fireplace and any decor that we wanted to bring, even real live burning candles (which usually isn’t allowed but totally adds to the vibe) it was an absolute dream. You can tell that Katie has experience in coordinating special days like this. She made sure that my husband and I had a private moment after we said, I do to truly take in the moment. (Something I never would’ve even thought of). She provided photo opportunities for our photographer and made sure that everything ran smoothly. We are so grateful that the Scarlet Oak Tavern team pulled through for us and made our wedding day one that we will truly never forget. The day felt like a day that had been planned for months when really it all came together in less than 24 hours. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Restaurant Review: The Scarlet Oak, Hingham
The Scarlet Oak is more than a restaurant; it is a living piece of Hingham’s colonial past. The story begins in 1757, when Danil Whiton built the Georgian home that would remain in his family for 150 years. Its walls absorbed generations of history before eventually becoming the Whiton House Restaurant, and in 2007, it was reborn as The Scarlet Oak. The name itself honors the majestic trees that grew on the property, some of which still stand sentinel today.

Stepping inside, you feel the colonial character immediately. Low ceilings, worn floors, and the glow of fireplaces create an atmosphere that transports you back to an era when weary travelers might have arrived by carriage, seeking warmth and sustenance. Yet the experience is not frozen in time. The Scarlet Oak blends this heritage with modern gourmet sensibilities, offering dishes layered with flavor and crafted with precision.

Executive Chef Stephen Sherman a local south shore resident moves through the kitchen with purpose, his years of experience evident in every plate. The haddock and corn chowder is hearty and comforting, the tuna tartare bright and fresh, and the steak seared to perfection. Each dish carries its own personality, reflecting both care and passion. I loved the choice of rice bed mix with egg strips. The aromatic smell of the truffle fries tasted just as good. He asked if a basket was in order, yes and please. A thoughtfully curated wine list complements the menu as well, enhancing the sense of indulgence.

The restaurant’s layout mirrors its dual identity: intimate rooms for family celebrations, a function space with a private bar upstairs, and a kitchen capable of producing meals with both efficiency and artistry. Whether you’re seated by the fire on a rainy evening or gathered upstairs for a celebration, the atmosphere is steeped in history yet alive with contemporary energy.

The Scarlet Oak is a testament to continuity and reinvention. From its colonial origins under the Whiton family to its modern incarnation, it remains a place where food, tradition, and atmosphere converge. Firelight, wine, and the enduring presence of scarlet oaks on the property make dining here a timeless experience. If you need a live, breath New England moment on the south shore. Look no further than The Scarlet Oak Tavern.

Atmosphere: 4/5
Busy on a Saturday night. Fireplace is a nice touch, but I wish it was more central within the restaurant. Definitely get the tavern vibes.

Service: 3/5
Fairly average service. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular.

Food: 1/5
A) Kids pizza (1/5). This was just inedible. Probably one of the worst pizzas I’ve ever tried. A frozen pizza from the grocery store is better than this
B) Kids mac and cheese (1/5). This was just Kraft Mac and Cheese that I could have bought for 99 cents at the grocery store that they are selling for $10. A restaurant like this should make their own mac and cheese. Disgrace
C) Coq au vin (1/5). Chicken was way overcooked, dry, and lacking any flavor whatsoever.
D) Pork Chop (3/5). Flavor was decent, but the pork chop was overcooked.
E) Chocolate cake dessert (3/5). Didn’t taste homemade or freshly made. I suspect it was made a long time ago and microwaved before being brought to the table. The peanut brittle was the only saving grace, albeit a bit sweet.

Overall: 2/5. This place has vibes and potential, but seems to have fallen victim to complacency and uninspiring food. We’ve given this place 3 tries and all have been similar to this experience. We will not be back.

Husband ordered porterhouse steak medium. Came rare to table. Table next to ours had same issue. Accommodated my gluten and dairy allergies…BUT only gave me 4 SMALL scallops and a tiny bit of spinach. Dishes have no garnishes at all and food is just sitting on a white place. Forget about presentation and “eating with your eyes first:” Don’t mind paying, but going home hungry just isn’t right. No bread offered. I wanted to love this place because of history and some reviews, but unfortunately it was a huge letdown. Management seems to give the same “pat” answer online to people who were disappointed. Too many wonderful restaurants around with delicious, appealing, and decent size meals. This is not one of them.

We really enjoyed our meals. We had nice seats facing the real wood fireplace. The New England clam chowder was excellent. Very creamy and flavorful. The bowl was quite large and perfect for sharing. The pancetta, fig and goat cheese pizza was super delicious. I can’t wait to get it again! The service was very good and we were seated very quickly. We will return.

This restaurant is really good on a normal day but if it’s a special occasion like Thanksgiving or Valentines — I would look elsewhere. They overbook so the kitchen and wait staff are overwhelmed and the quality of food and service are degraded. They are better on regular day.

Both service, food and drinks are excellent. Except most bartenders under pour the drinks by about a third. I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed it. Maybe now they will start filling the glasses to the top

We recently started getting dinner on Monday nights here and it was great. The service is top notch and very friendly which is super helpful. The menu has a decent amount of options so you won’t starve here! They have plenty of bar seating and dining room tables so you can usually grab a spot without much of a wait. They have a live fireplace which they keep the fire roaring and it makes for a nice, cozy place.
