This is a nice place to get a bite to eat inside the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The menu selection isn’t huge but they have some sandwiches and salads as well as some brunch options. The large patio is a great place to eat especially when the weather is nice.

Went to visit the garden for lunch and got caught in the Great System Crash of 2026, or so I thought. The sandwich I ordered was okay, but not worth the two hours it took to come out. Luckily it was a beautiful day with pleasant company and good conversation. Unfortunately the level of proactive problem solving was subpar. My wife had to go to the counter two or three times to speak to staff. Definitely could have been handled in a way that it did not become a complete and utter meltdown. Probably should have asked for a refund, but we were planning on enjoying the garden after lunch. Come to leave a review and find it’s not even the first time food has been slow.

I just had the best customer service experience at Sassafras thanks to the manager, Tiffany Prince. She went above and beyond for me even though she was off duty and clearly on her way home. I asked another employee about the salad I ordered because I have been having some digestive issues and the salad ended up having some items that I couldn’t eat. I wasn’t even looking for any accommodations, I just wanted to know how I could order to avoid my mistake in the future. Tiffany overheard our conversation and was so kind! She went back into the kitchen and made me a brand new salad! Thanks to her kindness and excellent customer service I was able to enjoy my full meal without any pain. I will definitely be back to eat here again with my family.

One of the grand things about outdoor seating is that if the staff can’t get to the table to clean it in time, sometimes the birds would come and eat what the customers have left behind. And who needs their Ipads for their music when the birds can provide a concert for you! Now for visitors without a car, this place is served by MetroBus route number 8 and Metro Call-a-Ride.

Everything on the menu is amazing! Honestly one of my favorite places in STL to eat because they actually use fresh ingredients! Love sitting on the patio when it is nice out!

The butternut caramelized onion soup of the day had a good flavor but was not hot when it arrived. The ham sandwich on brown bread with Gouda was tasty with the dill pickles as a surprise crunch to the sandwich that was appreciated.
The big disappointment was the coffee. It cost more than the fountain drink, but unlike the fountain drinks when I asked I was told I could not get free refills. I received the coffee from the counter where I ordered. Then had to go over and add the cream on another location before locating a seat.

While I would not make a special trip here to eat, it was ok for a visit to the Botanical Gardens.

Not an extensive menu but a decent selection of food. The seating area is really nice, and there is a large outdoor patio seating area as well. This makes a good place to catch your breath and grab a bite when visiting the garden. One complaint: unlike at many museums, membership get you no discount here.

The view is the real attraction, but the food is pretty good too. It’s counter service, but the ingredients are fresh and the food is well prepared. In fair weather you can enjoy your meal or beverage outside — lovely!

I have not eaten at the Sassafras café for a long time, I used to eat here often and loved it but, I was there today and Unfortunately it was not good. It seems to food quality has gone down. I hope they make changes and fix this somehow.

After we had checked out several of the collections of Orchids, flowers, and other types of plants at the Missouri Botanical Garden, MJ, our friend from work, and I had brunch at this restaurant on the garden grounds. The food was quite good. I had classic Belgian Waffles and a side of lemon pepper chicken chunks. MJ and Morgan had the same kind of waffles but with ham cooked on it. We all agreed that it was a good meal.
