I’ve been coming to Sarku Japan at Penn Square Mall since I moved to Oklahoma back in 2015 — and it’s still one of my favorite food spots in the entire OKC area!
Their chicken teriyaki plate with white rice, vegetables, and extra sauce is unbeatable. The flavor is rich, the portions are generous, and the quality is super consistent every time. It instantly reminded me of the variety of food I enjoyed living in Los Angeles — which was hard to find here back then, especially beyond fast food or Tex-Mex.
Even though Penn Square Mall has expanded and now offers more food choices, Sarku Japan still stands out as my #1. They also serve beef and shrimp options, and you can customize with noodles or fried rice (small upcharge but worth it!).
Honestly, my only complaint? I wish they had more locations throughout the OKC metro! If I had the capital, I’d open a spot myself. It’s that good.
If you’re at the mall or just craving some top-tier teriyaki, this place is a must-try!

We have eaten here for 11 years now and this is by far the best chicken teriyaki we have found. It may be at the mall, but it’s not mall flavor. Get the extra chicken and extra sauce. I typically get all veggies for my side and my wife gets 1/2 and 1/2 veggies and noodles…we split the noodles. Man…this is good eats and always consistent. If you’re gluten free, just do the veggies and request no sauce. It is still phenomenal. Very consistent flavors. Never once had a bad food reaction and I’m very sensitive as is my daughter. Five stars.

I fell in love with this restaurant about three weeks ago. The food is cooked to order and fresh every time. The taste and flavor is always the same too. My favorite dish is the #4 with extra teriyaki chicken. If you are wondering about the prices, they are very reasonable.

This food court restaurant is fantastic. The food is made to order, the food is hot and fresh. Downside? It’s made to order. This means during busy periods the food can take some time from order to sit down. Here is the main take away: portions, quality, fresh is all better than the competitor just two spots away. The wait time is not for those in a rush.

Food was great. Cooks did amazing. The lady at the counter was rude and oddly enough, smacking her gum chewing it while talking with you. No greeting, didn’t ask what size drink I wanted, put no ice in my drink and the soda was watered down. A couple of customers later, she pulled out her phone to answer a phone call all while taking another couples order. Instead of being nice, she was rude and rushed not to deal with us anymore.

I went to eat at this Sarku Japan location at Penn Square Mall in OKC. Usually I am not over in that area, and so I don’t go to this restaurant that often. In the past I always thought this business should have more locations because the chicken teriyaki meal was a good value, but I am not sure of that anymore because their food standards are now absent. The flavor is still good, but the amount of food value is way down. In the past at the mall, this restaurant had the most customers in the food court compared to all the others. However, not tonight, and I wonder if it’s because of what I saw. They had one person handing out samples, and I didn’t have to wait in line, which is not normal because usually there’s always a line. Usually they have two cooks, one cashier, and one person working in the back. I only saw one cook. I got my food less than two minutes after I ordered it at 5:58 p.m. for a total of $13.67, with a medium drink added to my order. The cook probably gave me what grilled chicken was left sitting on the grill during the lull in business, because I got very little. The person handing out samples was probably refilling the samples from the chicken on the grill and I got what was left sitting there. The chicken didn’t even cover all my rice, like it used to before. I don’t get vegetables on my chicken teriyaki anymore, because crunchy vegetables upset my stomach. Despite that, I still don’t expect more chicken to substitute for the lack of vegetables. I still was disappointed by the small amount of chicken teriyaki that I got and wish I had taken a photo to illustrate what little I had gotten. It used to be you got a lot of chicken without having to pay for extra chicken and they used to ladle teriyaki sauce over your chicken and rice. This isn’t done anymore. They have the sauce now in containers, which is a waste of plastic in my opinion. I had to go back and get another container of sauce because the sauce container isn’t big enough and plain rice is bland to me without a sauce. I thought maybe it was a fluke with just me not having enough chicken, but then I saw there was hardly anyone in line. It wasn’t like that a year or so ago, the last time I ate there. People used to buy two or three dinners a person to take home. I wasn’t seeing that. I was there eating dinner until around 6:35 p.m. and people were eating elsewhere at the other restaurants in the food court. I wonder if giving out less chicken on a meal is now reflecting upon Sarku sales and therefore causing sales to plummet. I was really disappointed by the amount of food I got!! Usually I have enough to eat a small portion at home the next day, but that didn’t happen with this order. I went up there and said something about the amount of teriyaki chicken on the dinner being smaller, but the cashier just shrugged his shoulders. Before I left around 6:35 pm, I finally saw a multi-order being made of about 4 dinners sitting upon the shelf waiting for chicken, which was being grilled. I noticed there was a considerably smaller amount of chicken on the grill being cooked than what I have seen in the past. Maybe it wasn’t a fluke with me getting a smaller amount of chicken, it must be the procedure now. Maybe, it’s a smaller portion control standard now being handed down from the corporate office. How disappointing! I should have asked for my money back. If there is a survey on my receipt, I will definitely be doing it to reflect my experience at Sarku Japan.

If you took a quarter or so of that away, it would illustrate how little chicken I got. I probably got a little over half of that on for the amount of chicken. My rice wasn’t covered all over with chicken and sauce like what the video shows.
