Thin-crust Dosa is just
They also have this mixed paratha. It’s like Sri Lankan kottu and was great. It pairs well with Paneer Butter Masala.
Definitely buy Baingan Bharta. You can just eat that and paneer butter masala with white rice; even that’s enough. So tasty.
Uthappam was very tasty. It’s like those in Sri Lanka. All side dishes are top-notch.
As a Sri Lankan with a South Asian palate living in Italy, this restaurant is a literal gem.
And the service is incredibly fast. We just placed our order on the mobile, and the food came right away.
I’m so satisfied with the value for money.
For 5 people. Bill was 137 Euros.
It may be expensive compared to other Indian restaurants in Rome, but no one comes close to the taste of their food.
I tried their Idlis, Dosas, Vada, Thali and lots of other dishes and nothing disappointed. And to wash it all down with some amazing Filter Kapi was divine.
It’s amazing to see how many Saravana Bhavans are there around the globe today. The last time I asked, the count was 104 branches across 21 countries.
First of all, this Saravana Bhavan did not reflect the traditional flavours and quality that the brand is known for worldwide.
We have visited several branches across different countries, and this was by far the most disappointing. Having travelled all the way from Australia, we were excited to experience a South Indian meal in Rome but were let down. We dined here three separate times during our trip, hoping the poor experience was a one-off issue, but each visit confirmed the same problems.
The dosa was cold every time, the sambar tasted like watered-down dal, and the chutneys were far too salty. While it was nice to be served the dosa very quickly after ordering it, the dosa was completely cold across its entire surface, while the sambar was hot in a small stainless-steel cup. When I mentioned this to the waiter, he said that it might be the ‘temperature difference’ due to the cold weather. But I wonder why the sambar was hot and not the dosa? I was baffled with my understanding of heat and mass transfer between:
1) dosa and the ambient temperature and
2) the sambar and the ambient temperature and
3) my understanding of heat and mass transfer and thermodynamics in Rome…
I was too hungry to continue that discussion with the waiter.
This was also the first time that I saw a masala dosa, with the masala served OUTSIDE the cold dosa. (As pictured)
The thaali was far below average in taste and there was no South Indian, Chennai, Saravana Bhavan flavour. The paneer butter masala was oily and lacked depth of flavour. The kesari was overpriced for the portion size and underwhelming in taste. No surprise that it was also very cold. What an irony, they say that ‘Healthy, never tasted so good!’ (As pictured)
The ambience was also affected by the staff; the person taking orders at the front was quite rude and spoke very loudly in Malayalam to somebody throughout our meal, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the experience. The service overall was unfriendly. The waitresses were grumpy and seemed more focused on clearing our table than providing a welcoming experience. During the two out of our three visits, the restaurant was nearly empty, yet we were hurried out as if there was a line of people waiting. It gave the impression that they simply didn’t want us lingering, even when there was no reason to rush. It was not near the closing time.
On a positive note, the restaurant is conveniently located near Roma Termini, and the lassi was good, but that’s about all we can compliment.
We hope the management takes inspiration from the strong reputation of other international Saravana Bhavan branches. Also beware, walking down to the restrooms takes you through a very greasy stairway and corridor that can be slippery.
The vibe was nice too, with soft instrumental music in the background.
✔️ Idli – perfectly soft and fluffy, served with tasty chutneys and sambar.
✔️ Dosa – light, crispy, and cooked just right, with generous fillings.
✔️ Idli Vada – a great combo! The idli was soft while the vada was crispy outside and fluffy inside.
✔️ Vegetable Kadhai – rich, aromatic, and full of fresh vegetables in a flavorful gravy.
✔️ Dahi Vada – melt-in-the-mouth vadas with smooth, tangy yogurt and spices, very refreshing. It could have been little sweet. But overall was good.
✔️ Onion Uttapam – thick, fluffy, and topped generously with onions, delicious with chutneys.
The staff were warm and friendly, and the service was quick. If you’re in Rome and craving authentic Indian vegetarian food, this is definitely the place to visit!
