This dinner was so delicious. The flavors were expertly balanced, creating a truly memorable culinary experience. We particularly enjoyed the authentic preparation of each dish. The ambiance provided a perfect setting for a relaxing and enjoyable meal. The wait staff greeted us with friendly attitudes and had no promblem that we were English speakers. We highly recommend this Italian restaurant for anyone seeking exquisite Italian cuisine that is fast and friendly. Start with the Cesare Salad and minestrone soup (the best soup ever). The Salmon penne and the spinach and ricotta ravioli were to die for. The Aperal Spritz was a refreshing start to the experience.

Located near Museo Nacional de Costa Rica in downtown San José, Sapore Trattoria offers authentic Italian cuisine, a welcoming atmosphere, and friendly service. The dishes we tried were excellent, especially the pasta and thin-crust pizza. Notably, the restaurant has a pizza oven at the front, and the pasta is homemade, which is a significant plus. They also feature a private room at the back for larger parties and boast an extensive wine list.

Some recommended dishes we enjoyed:
1. Insalata Cesare: Their take on Caesar salad with lettuce and chicken, served in a crispy Parmesan basket—fresh, crunchy, and tasty.
2. Spaghetti Neri con Gamberi: Homemade black squid ink spaghetti with jumbo shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and lemon zest. The portion is small, but the flavors are excellent and satisfying.
3. Lasagna Bolognese: A small but flavorful serving with layers of ground beef and pork in Bolognese sauce topped with cheese.
4. Capricciosa Pizza: Thin-crust pizza topped with artichokes, mushrooms, cooked ham, and black olives—an excellent choice, offering a flavorful and satisfying dish to share.

Best Italian I’ve been to in Costa Rica – better than Four Seasons and Nayara! Fresh spinach and ricotta ravioli with great flavour, it was incredible! My husband ordered the three mushroom fettuccine and whilst I’m not usually a truffle fan, this was also lovely! Carlos and the team gave great service!

I ordered a 4 cheese to go. Super delicious. Service was great. And the vibes are just like an Italian restaurant. A bit expensive overall, but Quality!

I went for dinner one night in Sapore, and it was just OK. The service and the staff’s behaviour were fantastic. Though the same cannot be said about the food. I ordered minstrone soup, and it was anything but a minstrone. It seems like their chef had looked up online and made the first recipe s/he found. The pizza, though good in taste, lacked in shape and dough thickness. The lemonade was nice, though. Overall, it was an alright experience, but for the price they charge, I expected more.

Food was unexpectedly good and hearty. The portions were not huge but were of acceptable size.

We felt the food prices were reasonable but drink prices were unconscionably high. The drink prices push the total bill above what would otherwise be a great value. That said, I understand these places need to make money.

The overall restaurant has more of a homey, rustic feel than I imagined, which is just fine. Location and service were very good.

Reservations can be made online, which are recommended. Be aware that two meals and two non-alcoholic beverages will run $40-$45 USD on the low side. That does not include any appetizers or deserts.

Good for a special treat but unlikely that we will visit frequently as the value just isn’t there. There’s better out there.

My seabass with citrus sauce, divine! Our caprese salad to start was the best ever. Perfect finish to spending 2+ hours next door at the Jade Museum

Nice place. We were 6 of us visiting Costa Rica and happened to be staying close to Sapore. We liked the food and the folks at the restaurant were very gracious in helping us with minor modifications with the menu. Enjoyed the evening. Prices were a bit on the higher side.

Highly recommended for a great dinner! We were pleased that our hotel recommended this. The restaurant is warm, inviting and was decorated with Christmas decorations. The front of the restaurant is where the chef makes the pizza in the wood fired oven. We sat towards the back where it was quieter. The food is fantastic! Wine, warm bread, and generous portions pasta: the Flaming Wheel made carbonara and then the fettuccine Bolognese. The ice cream special dessert was good. Staff are very friendly, gracious, attentive and responsive. Enjoy!!
