Dining here was a sensory delight. The pasta dishes were exquisite, especially the Mentaiko Lumache with pistachios. Our pizzas were excellent; true Napoli style.

Being seated at the kitchen counter allowed us to watch the chefs ply their art. That itself was almost as enjoyable as the tasty desserts. Strongly recommend.

We have been here about 7 times over the years – and have brought many friends along for the fun. It is truly a great experience every time, food amazing, attentive staff and slightly updated dishes to make it interesting. Be ready for an adventure and open to new flavor combos! You will not be disappointed.
I started with a Hana Hachi drink which is so fun – I usually get 2, very mezcal smokey, but sweet-ish. So great.
We went with another couple so we ordered more for the 4 of us. We started with the gem salad and all agreed it was not “just a salad” – so bright, light and tasty. Crispy brussels were a special and fantastic – lick the plate great. Duck tataki was our adventure choice and really great – duck was perfect and mango made it light and sweet – what an amazing combo of flavors. That was the winner of apps and easy to share.
I got the dungeness crab fettuccine – this is actually the 3rd time i’ve gotten this dish and just want more. Big chunks of crab, buttery creamy sauce with slices of seaweed on top. Fresh pasta is just my favorite and they did this dish perfect.
Had to get the Isaac Becker pizza for my friends (their first time there) and it was awesome. Definitely mid-spicy level, but with cabbage and lime it was so dreamy – light and perfectly cooked. We all loved it.
Friend had the Mentaiko Lumache pasta and he was so happy – so savory, fun flavors (basil and pistachio?). My husband always gets their GF pizza and there was a special for the spicy pepperoni. He was thrilled and said they do this perfectly.
We have also gotten the squid ink pasta in the past and loved that – it’s different than normal pasta, but really great.
Prices were also pretty good – each couple paying about $150 (with wine and drinks).
Highly recommend Sanjusan!

Amazing, delicious, Cyrus and Dreyon were the best seriously such a pleasure to spend our anniversary here!! Highly reccomend the Mentaiko (coe-rod, pistacho, basil situation we were reccomended) and the Verdi pizza. We had also a dessert I can’t remember the name of (squash puree, candied nuts, apples). Insane. 10/10

Years overdue, but one experience was able to define my entire impression of this establishment because the food was really good. Some of the items in my pictures no longer exist on the menu, but I have faith that whatever they have decided to replace those items with must be great as well. It is also cool to see some of the items that I had in 2021 are still around! I am honestly really happy to see it.

Pretty much everything was a hit in my opinion. The A5 wagyu nigiri resulted in one very pleasant bite because the wagyu beef, which was supposed to be fatty in texture, did it work in providing the rice with a rich flavor as well. The panzanella had multiple ingredients such as cucumber, avocado, and serrano pepper, and having a bonito mayo giving it additional flavor made the dish work but in terms of flavor and texture. The stracciatella was interesting because I have never seen salsa verde and wasabi together in one dish, and it tasted pretty good. I wasn’t used to it, but I could more than tolerate it for sure. The pork gyoza was really good as well, not only because the wood ear mushrooms provided a layer of texture that the dumpling didn’t have, but also because the foie gras provided some richness to the gyoza. In terms of pasta, both the squid ink pappardelle and the fettuccine ai uni were great! The pasta was al dente. There was enough crab and bolognese in the dish. And the pecorino romano cheese in the squid ink pasta provided extra creaminess texture since I mixed it in with the sauce. Both dishes were super solid.

It seems like prices have increased drastically since I was last here in 2021, which I understand is because of inflation, but it makes the dishes way less afforable now. The squid ink pasta, which is still on the menu, went from $23 to $32.5, and that’s quite a bit. Because of that, I don’t think this is one of those places one would visit all the time. For a special occasion, though, based on the food alone, worth it.

I went there for Valentine’s Day after hearing good things. Despite having a reservation, we waited over an hour to be seated in a crowded waiting area. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. The pacing of the meal was completely off: drink pairings arrived 5-10 minutes after we had already finished the corresponding course. Several dishes were served noticeably cold. The timing issues made the whole experience feel chaotic and poorly executed and the temperature of the food made it feel like we were eating leftovers. If I could, I would give this experience 0/5 stars.

Sanjusan is one of the most exciting dining experiences in Minneapolis, seamlessly blending Japanese and Italian flavors. We started with an Old Fashioned made with Japanese whiskey (smooth and well-balanced) and a glass of Mercat Cava Rosé, which paired beautifully with the food.

The arancini with onsen egg was rich and melt-in-your-mouth, while the pork gyoza with foie gras butter was indulgent and flavorful. The mentaiko lumache pasta with cod roe, pistachio, and basil was outstanding, with the pistachios adding a perfect nutty lift. The Isaac Becker spicy raw tuna pizza on Neapolitan crust was another standout, phenomenal crust and bursting with flavor.

Service was excellent, the atmosphere was stylish yet comfortable, and every dish was beautifully executed. Highly recommend Sanjusan if you’re looking for a unique and memorable night out in Minneapolis.

Menu is interesting with an Italian Japanese fusion but the dishes are executed very well. Some of the best food I have had in years. We booked a reservation for patio seating and were well taken care of. Our waiter answered all our questions and was very attentive yet soft spoken to make the experience intimate. Highly recommend the Mentaiko Lumache I have been thinking about it everyday since. The flavor fusions are immaculate and I will recommend everyone to the spot.

This restaurant is a really interesting fusion between Japanese and Italian. The atmosphere was modern and delightful. The concept of 4 floors with each representing a different experience. My only complaint was another microtini! The wine list (too small and no great selection). Everything else was really good!

Easily one of my top ten meals ever. Very elegant presentation and incredibly fresh ingredients. Servers are knowledgeable about the wine pairings. Perfect for a special occasion meal.

I see the map is grabbing Sanjusan – this review is for Kado.

I tend not to review restaurants, good or bad, but I’m moved to make an exception in this case. My experience at Sanjusan ranks among the most mixed dining experiences in my life. The food was, for the most part, excellent; the uni carbonara is a particularly inspired dish. They have a solid bar program, too. Service met all expectations up until our salad came with (off-menu) hazelnuts even after we’d noted a serious nut allergy to our server. The salad was returned, and we proceeded to go unnoticed and unacknowledged by staff for the next 45 minutes. It felt like we were being iced out. Food moved freely from the kitchen, mostly to parties who’d arrived well after us. I understand allergies can be annoying, but in my experience restaurants at this price points are usually more understanding/accommodating (especially when the allergy is serious and the allergen in question wasn’t listed on the menu!). I think our server eventually noticed, and our drinks were comped. I wish I could remember his name; he really rescued the experience.

3.5/5
