Hello!!!!!! How have I been living in Portland and not known that Sandy Jug Tavern is serving up one of the best burgers in town?
We swung by on a very busy Christmas Eve and were immediately hit with that perfect, cozy tavern glow. If you haven’t been, the vibe is pure “Old Portland”—historic, unpretentious, and effortlessly cool. We managed to snag a spot near the bar, which was the perfect vantage point to watch the holiday chaos while sipping on our Christmas Old Fashioneds.
Our trio went all in: a Juicy Lucy, a Chopped Cheese, and a BLT. I tried to play it safe and go the “healthy” route with the BLT—which was fresh and crisp—but the Juicy Lucy absolutely stole the show!
As a group of self-proclaimed burger connoisseurs, we were floored. We’re talking a thick, hand-pressed patty stuffed with molten American cheese that literally oozes with every bite. PRO TIP: Exercise some holiday restraint and let it sit for a minute so you don’t incinerate your tongue on that delicious cheese lava!
Not to be outdone, the Chopped Cheese was a gritty, glorious masterpiece—the perfect NYC-style love child of a cheeseburger and a Philly cheesesteak.
Between the historic “Jug” setting, the friendly holiday service, and the cheese-stuffed heaven on a plate, our bellies left very, very happy. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a PDX rite of passage. We will definitely be back!

Smash burger was served hot and delicious! Cute interior and exterior. Dog friendly patio. A little noisy outside from the cars but otherwise nice and spacious. Vegan options available . HH daily 2-6 food items

Went for Saturday dinner…we’re not huge drinkers…my wife’s vegan hamburger was good…so we’re the onion rings and Ceasar salad…my Hawaiian burger was not really to my liking…great atmosphere.

The decore is this vintage 70’s tigers and classy ladies all alone the walls!
The bar staff is incredible, cocktails are amazing. I had my first chopped cheese sandwich here and although I have no previous knowledge to base it off but it was delicious!!!
I’m here for trivia every Sunday, if you come make sure you’re a little early. It gets busy fast, but there’s speakers on the patio too if there’s overflow or if your team has smokers ✨✨✨

Awesome atmosphere with spectacular service. Fun vibe with old photos and low lighting. Bartender was on top of it and super friendly. Although we didn’t order food, we saw food being brought out and it all looked delicious. They have different varieties of drinks and specials. Lots of seating options to include a patio outside. Bathrooms are decorated nicely and well kept. Would go back!!!

the place is corny looking but the bar food SLAPS. the happy hour burger is my favorite menu item, with two patties and american cheese, fry sauce and a perfectly toasted on the griddle bun gives the extra sense that they’re really taking care. it’s just a perfect burger go get yourself one. chicken tenders are also top tier.

I can’t speak for the food, just stopped in for a couple of drinks but this place is seriously cool. Very unique. Great service and drinks are pretty reasonable! Worth checking out.

I went to this place in 2007 or 2008. I thought it was a sports bar but there were women displaying their vulvas, i believe, inappropriately, so we quickly excused ourselves. How can you munch burger while someone’s labia is 2 feet from your face? I remain puzzled.

Thursday, October 2nd. Me and my friends party of four came in here. We looked at everyone. Didn’t see anyone behind a bar sat down at a table it was like. I’m sure they’ll be back. This was about 10:30 at night by the way. Sat there looking at each other confused. Looked at the bar still wasn’t able to find a single person and this was supposed to be my bachelor bar crawl so we were supposed to. You know be spending a lot of money and having fun. Ended up leaving for the bar. Just a couple over place was cool. Service was absolute garbage. Get your stuff together because this is the first and the last time I will ever check this place out and I will recommend it to no one

Everybody loves jugs! The Sandy Jug is no exception. The drinks and food are always on point, a great lil watering hole for you & your friends. They have a nice patio outback where you can smoke if that’s your thing.
