Reviews
The pinto beans (frijoles de la olla) were dry, and the red rice was hard and tasted like boxed rice and was flavorless . The chilaquiles were just tortilla strips covered in canned enchilada sauce, and the huevos rancheros were essentially the same dish without the chips. The eggs were the only part that was ok.
These are simple, classic Mexican dishes that are usually inexpensive and full of flavor, so it was disappointing to see them done so poorly. We also ordered one Paloma, which was just okay. We paid over $80 which we felt was way overpriced for what we got. Sadly, we won’t be coming back.
I would say I wish I had read the reviews beforehand but that’s a tricky decision since there are lots of high reviews. Not sure how
The food absolutely lives up to the energy. Their tacos are consistently described as super flavorful—particularly the carnitas and tri-tip varieties—with fresh ingredients and thoughtful sauces that elevate every bite. The chips & salsa are a must-try starter: warm, crisp, and served with a variety of salsas.
Food: Outstanding. We started with their air-fried chips and a variety of flavorful sauces, including the mild roja and Hector’s Spicy, both excellent. The mild roja was exceptionally versatile and bursting with flavor, while Hector’s Spicy offered a comforting, medium level of heat. Our choice of wet burritos – the Flaco (vegetarian) and the fish burrito – were generously sized and packed with high-quality ingredients. The green sauce had a delightful lightness with a tangy kick, and the red sauce had a roasted flavor with a pleasing, not-too-heavy consistency. To complement our meal, we enjoyed two margaritas – the Cadillac and a specially requested blackberry with mint – both expertly crafted by Greg, the bartender.
Service: Exceptional. The abundance of attentive waitstaff ensured we had a superb dining experience. For instance, when my wife accidentally dropped her knife, three employees promptly assisted, delivering a replacement within a minute.
Overall Atmosphere: Sancho’s Tacos has a vibrant atmosphere perfect for evening visits, showcasing a small yet inviting space with a prominent bar. The vibe is reminiscent of a beachside dive bar, offering a unique food profile akin to Baja California. The art from Kool Hand Luke adds to the ambiance, and the music selection was just right, allowing for enjoyable conversations. Addressing the elephant in the room, the prices were on the higher side, with our order of chips, 2 burritos, and 2 margaritas totaling $80. However, the burrito portions were so generous that we ended up with a meal for tomorrow as well.
In conclusion, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Sancho’s Tacos and will certainly be returning. Kudos to the Sancho’s team for a job well done!
To start with some positives, the food was great, service was great, and I love the style of the restaurant. The air brushed art truly defines this restaurant as different from the others. That said the food menu directly competes with Pesticos in my eyes as they both charge per taco, but give very large, and rather gourmet tacos. What Sancho’s has that Pesticos does not that gives it the upper hand is clearly AC and a full bar. If you want either choose Sancho’s. I will save the reason to go to Pesticos for the end, positives first.
I had a Federale and a Skrimps taco, my dad had a Skrimps Carnales taco, and we split a full order of chips (Verde and habanero salsa in the picture). The Federale was amazing and my Skrimps was okay. My dad’s Skrimps Carnale (fried shrimp not sauteed like mine) was definitely the shrimp to get. We both loved the mild Verde salsa, and the habanero was actually mild enough that he could also eat it (I’m a heat freak I found it a bit lacking where it was just on the threshold of inedible for him. If you watch Hot Ones on YouTube, know that I put Last Dab on my raisin canes for perspective)
So with the positives about the quality of everything done I now need to bring up the big down side that earns them a 3. The price. One Skrimps Carnale taco is $10.50, the chips and salsa are $5 for a half order or $6 for a full order and while the chips were clearly freshly fried tortillas this is sometimes not the best as some of the chips were under cooked and there are 4 other restaurants in the area where chips are free and bottomless. My two tacos added up to over $15 and for an over $40 dollar bill (as we decided against alcoholic drinks since it was noon) this was not a lot of food. The Skrimps burrito is $20 dollars and the burritos while quality looking were very small compared to those at Elvira’s, Casa Maguey, or Espiaus. At nearly identical pricing I can’t recommend Sancho’s over the competition based on what you get for what you pay. Three tacos, an ice tea, a coke, and a full chips and salsa for more than two full lunch combos at Casa Maguey just isn’t worth it in my eyes. Give them a try and see if you feel the same way that we do, but I definitely think that what we paid was more than what we got.
This said the place was full when we left and no one seemed to bat an eye about the chips or prices but us. I would love to see this restaurant thrive but with the coming restaurant in what used to be Rhino Records I’m not sure. If the prices go down, or they make some form of lunch special or the ability to get a two taco combo of some kind it would definitely raise the value as the food was great, just over priced.
