I had the BBQ pulled pork and Mac and cheese dog, and I added coleslaw to it too! couldn’t finish it all but it was great! My husband got a spicy chili dog and went back for another! Definitely recommend trying it out!

Sam’s used to be my favorite hang out spot after the gay club. But since it changed owners (rip Marcus) this place has went to Hell in a handbasket. The new staff have no idea what they’re doing and the old staff look miserable working there. Would not recommend after 3 tequila shots at Crossings.

Ever since visiting home, I come to this place 2x a week…I love the Veggie Dogs with Everything. I get the #3 so I make it a Combo, grab an Ale8 (seasonal peach) and the BBQ Famous Grippos! Best Lunch you will have in Hot Dog form!

On a sunny afternoon the old man and I made took an adventure over to Sam’s Hot Dog Stand in downtown Lexington, KY. Sam’s is a chain throughout Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina. It has been a long time staple in Lexington, KY. Every Sam’s Hot Dog Stand menu is built around the classic staples of the original restaurant.

I tried two dogs, starting with the Chili Dog, mild, and added mustard, onions and cheese. It was served on a fresh, steamed bun. The dog was boiled, which is my favorite way to serve a dog, it had a decent snap and is all beef. The shredded cheese was just enough and the mustard was a good amount as well. The chili is old school, meat and sauce. It is slightly sweet and may have ketchup added to it. Everything was exactly how it should have been on a hot dog from a hot dog stand. It reminded me of hot dogs at a baseball park. My only real knock is that it would level the chili dog up with melted cheese or cheese sauce.

I also tried the Slaw Dog. Again, the bun was steamed perfectly, and the boiled hot dog was pretty good. The slaw was crunchy, fresh and made daily in house. It had a slight sweetness. They give you a good amount to cover the dog. I do wish the slaw was a bit wetter to soak into the bun and make for a much nicer mouth feel and bite.

Sam’s offers all the classic options for a dog, mild or spicy chili as well as premium pork sandwiches. The service is very friendly. They have limited seating. The Fat Man says that Sam’s Hot Dog Stand is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin.

Lived in Lexington for close to 25 years and this is a local favorite—simple classic chili dogs with bright and genuinely joyful service. A Lexington staple that got me through my medical residency at UK Med Center back in the 90’s. Thanks for the memories and love!

Also, they have cool hats!

Sam’s downtown is more than a hot dog stand. Way more. It’s a Cheers of sorts. It’s an easy place to just stop by and fill your tummy, or feel welcomed. It’s even an artsy place! They welcome you in, take your order and share a smile or two. All sorts of customers frequent Sam’s downtown. From those who live in the hood to those who work in the Suits buildings ;). They even have turkey dogs! Plus they are a COKE place ;). A trip to Sam’s downtown is always a good way to start your day/afternoon.
