The sauce and cheese on the large pepperoni I got tasted good.
The pizza crust itself was the problem.
The crust was very uneven. The thin spots not really well and tasted good. The high spots ( 3/4 of the pie) were another story.
It was so tough that I got tired of chewing. Usually it’s a full stomach that stops me from eating pizza. Not this time…I just got tired of trying.

I’m originally from NY and have lived in NC since 1986. Always searching for authentic NY style pizza. If you’re from the Northeast, you know what I mean. Finally found it at Sal’s in Durham. This little gem has great pizza, subs, salads. They’re eggplant parmesan is also pretty good. Have had their pizza with pepperoni, fried eggplant and sausage varieties. All were excellent. When you go for lunch, you can get 2 huge slices of pizza and a drink for under $10!!

Very friendly people. Super polite and courteous. Food was a great price! Well worth it! “Fried zucchini” was excellent, “sausage hero”was superior and delicious and the “chopped cheese sub” was amazing!!! The “pizza slice” was humongous and mouth watering!!! I would highly recommend “Sal’s” restaurant. Best part is I did not break the bank!!!!

We decided to give Sal’s a try after passing by several times. We were greeted upon entry and noticed the restaurant was very clean. The customer service was great, and the pizza was very good. The pizza reminded us of home ( NY), the only suggestion is to work on the wings a bit. Otherwise, we would have given 5 We will be back!!

Great to have a New York style pizza place in this area. We had a calzone and Caesar salad the first time. Both were great. Not much to a Caesar salad but the lettuce was fresh and well prepared. Nothing worse than brown lettuce that’s is full of stems. The calzone was delicious. Perfect mix of mozzarella and ricotta. The dough had a great crisp and chewiness to it. We will be back!!

Wow! Finally some authentic NY style pizza! I highly recommend Sal’s pizza on 55 for the best NY style pizza in this area. Generous slices and delicious crust and toppings make it one of the best South Durham has to offer.
