@sakatanoya the conveyor belt sushi shop on the west end of Delmar Loop. Nice to have the revolving sushi location show up on the St. Louis food scene!

This place literally just opened a couple of weeks ago. My family’s gauge on quality sushi is quite high as we have lived in Japan.

Their restaurant is very beautifully constructed. The location is at the start of the Delmar loop and the servers are very good — treating all guests nicely.

They have two areas to work on — the food and the expense. The food quality is actually decent for the St Louis area… uni and otoro (sea urchins and fatty tuna) are on their menu which isn’t common for most. Yet by our personal experience the quality in sushi grade doesn’t quite match the level presented here. Also the cost was considerably higher than most St Louis sushi experiences. We had expected this, and suspect it is partially due to its location, and partially due to their newness.

Overall, I personally love kaiten sushi (conveyor belt style). It is a first for St Louis, so I hope Sakatanoya (Sakata’s Shop) does well and gets even better over time.

First thing… my server was excellent. She was attentive and explained things well. The 4 stars on service is due to the hostess who sat me down. She didn’t smile and seemed annoyed when I didn’t want to sit by the front door when it was 20 degrees outside!
Now about the restaurant…I wanted to try the new “sushi on conveyor belt” restaurant so here we are. We were there at 5pm when they just opened for dinner and it was filled quickly. All plates are color coded and each color is different. Once you are done with one plate, put it into a slot like you are returning a movie at Blockbuster and it tracks the total. Your server still has to bring you the bill. For appetizer, choices other than conveyor belt sushi, you can order from a tablet above your table. This is not a new concept in St Louis. Years ago, we had a sushi buffet on conveyor belt in Ballwin. Price seems reasonable until you realize that it’s for 4 pieces of Maki on each plate, that’s half of a roll. The orange plate sushi are fancier Maki, but $7 for 4 pieces, that’s $16 for a full roll. HOWEVER, you get to try many different kinds of sushi so that’s good. Speaking of selections… they did not have a lot of choices. The same 4 to 5 selections keep coming around on the conveyor belt. It’s a fun experience but the sushi are generic. It’s as good as Dierbergs sushi so by no mean that it’s badthat means it’s bad. It’s “just okay” This is like the Texas Roadhouse of sushi.
Tip… don’t sit at the end of the conveyor belt! The good stuff will get picked clean before you!

I was dying to check out a restaurant that had a sushi conveyer belt and was not disappointed. The food was fresh and delicious whether we ordered it from the kitchen or got it off the belt. My husband enjoyed his ramen bowl as well. Not sure if times make a difference, we did set a reservation on google for 1pm and were sat as soon as we walked in. Our server Amy was really friendly and helpful answering any questions we had and was always checking up on us. Yes the prices are a little higher than some other sushi restaurants but in my opinion you have to atleast check this place out once. No complaints on our end and we had a wonderful experience.

We went the first week they open! It was our first experience with revolving sushi so we weren’t sure exactly what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. It was a fun experience for us. The revolving belt was nice with a slower pace which allowed us to have more time to chat and eat without rush. The robots bringing out food was very cool and a first for us as well. The food itself was very good. Sushi was delicious and good quality. We also got the season special beef tongue ramen and that was also fantastic!

We kept an open-mind, knowing that it’s their first week open and there may be kinks to work out but our experience was seamless and fun. We look forward to returning when they have their full menu available!

Absolutely loved this place. The conveyor-belt sushi was fresh, beautifully presented, and constantly rotating with a great variety, so there was always something tempting to grab.

The atmosphere was cozy but modern, making it a fun spot whether you’re dining solo or with friends. Everything felt well-organized and clean, and the whole experience was smooth from start to finish.

This is the kind of sushi spot you come to “just try” and end up planning your next visit before you even leave. Definitely a new favorite and highly recommend.

TLDR:
Save your money, dont recommend.

Came in, joined the waitlist with a 30 minute wait, and when we were sat down at our table the table was still sticky and had crumbs from the previous guests. We asked staff to clean it, which they did, and then we started ordering. The ginger served to us was old, and theres little to no variety in the rolls. If the sushi has cucumber on the menu picture, dont expect it. It wont be there. The quality of the fish (and sushi as a whole) is inconsistent and subpar. I was disappointed because they advertise themselves as “Authentic Japanese” and that is NOT accurate at all. Also be prepared to dine next to a lot of dirty tables that no one is bothering to bus (even on a somewhat steady Saturday night). Staff is not using sani-buckets for their wash cloths as well, btw. I understand conveyor belt sushi isn’t meant to be a mind-blowing experience, but when you order your sushi from the kitchen and you get an inconsistently prepared roll that’s missing the ingredients included in the description (avocado or in our case: cucumber!), what is the reason? I don’t understand how such a simple concept can be so half-assed and lacking. We did bring some of our concerns up to the manager and not only were they not helpful, they didn’t seem to see what was wrong with serving discolored/old ginger or that it’s misleading to show cucumber in the description/picture and then to exclude it just because. I’ve managed restaurants before and if you receive a subpar ingredient, you can reject it and even go somewhere in person if you need to restock urgently.

To the restaurant management: Do better! You should be ashamed of yourself, please learn how to run a restaurant you can be proud of. The quality tonight was embarassing and that “authentic japanese” is a standard you’re clearly not prepared to emulate at this time.

To prospective customers: Save your money, dont recommend. Grocery store sushi is better value than here.

We visited on opening day and, as expected, the wait was quite long but it was absolutely worth it. The gyukotsu (beef bone) ramen was truly impressive, both in presentation and flavor. You can really tell that a lot of thought and craftsmanship went into designing this dish it stands out from typical ramen spots.
Even on their very first day of soft opening, the team showed strong professionalism and great potential. You can feel they are already fine-tuning the details. We’re definitely looking forward to coming back to try more items. Wishing them great success!

We have done conveyor belt sushi in other places, so when it showed up in St. Louis, we wanted to give it a try!

The staff was friendly, and the food was tasty. It’s such a fun concept. You order from the iPads and can also take food off the conveyor belt. We did some of both. We didn’t love everything, but some of that could be preference.

The Delmar roll was great … Would recommend that for sure.

Other than you can’t change or adjust items when you order on the screen, such as no eel sauce, everything is delicious! Hubby loved the Ramen and the service was great! Highly recommend making reservations if you don’t want a long wait.

The conveyor belt is cool, food definitely needs a lot of work. We showed up at lunchtime shortly after opening on a Sunday and the food was sub-par to say the least. The wasabi had zero taste to it and was of a rehydrated play-doh consistency, almost like it had been sitting in a fridge for an extended period of time. Some of the nigiri we had was okay, but not really acceptable for their prices. Where we drew the line was the Philadelphia roll that we ordered, it looked like it had been made by someone who had never made a sushi roll in their life. The rice was all smashed and had a soggy, almost porridge like consistency to it, zoom in on the picture to see what I’m talking about. I had one bite and we sent the whole plate back it was so bad. They did comp the roll but the damage was already done at that point. Service was all done on tablet so not much to say in that department.
