P.s the food was to good to wait that’s why half my sandwich is eaten
Tucked inside the courthouse, where one expects nothing more than hurried sandwiches and lukewarm coffee, S.A. Soul Cafe is serving food that stops you in your tracks and reminds you what soul food is supposed to feel like.
I ordered the fried fish plate with sides of sweet potato and macaroni & cheese, and from the first bite it was clear: this is cooking with love, intention, and zero shortcuts. The fish – impeccably fresh, lightly battered, and fried to a golden, greaseless crunch – arrived piping-hot, as if it had just whispered goodbye to the oil moments before reaching my tray. The flesh was sweet, flaky, and succulent; a quick dip in the tartar sauce or a swipe through their vibrant hot sauce elevated it to something borderline transcendent.
The sweet potatoes were the definition of comfort: fork-tender, naturally sweet, with a whisper of cinnamon and brown-sugar butter that glazed rather than overwhelmed. And the mac & cheese – Lord have mercy – creamy without being gloopy, with a sharp cheddar backbone and a perfectly bronzed top layer that delivered that essential baked-cheese pull. Every component tasted like it was prepared the moment I ordered it, not sitting under a heat lamp praying for adoption.
This isn’t cafeteria food; it’s grandmother-on-Sunday food, made by people who season with memory and pride. In a place where most would settle for “good enough,” S.A. Soul Cafe chooses excellence – and it shows in every bite.
If you find yourself anywhere near the courthouse, do your taste buds (and your soul) a favor: skip the chains, bypass the vending machines, and treat yourself to a plate made with palpable care. You’ll leave fuller in every sense of the word.
Highly recommended.
I left with a full stomach and the distinct feeling I’d just been fed by family. I’ll be back the next time I’m summoned (jury duty or not.)
