We had a lovely anniversary dinner at Ruta. Staff was very attentive and the food was delicious. We enjoyed Green Borscht, a mix of dumplings (although they were very small), stuffed cabbage, and black sea bass. We finished our meals with Medovyk (fantastic!) and Kyiv cake (less impressive, felt like it was frozen and mass produced but I might be wrong). Overall food was traditional and I highly recommend it.

Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant

What a lovely introduction to Ukrainian food. We began with their appetizers and it was uphill all the way. Not only is their food prepared to delight but each dish was visually appealing that elevated our whole experience.

I would recommend arriving for an early dinner and make reservations. We arrived at 5pm on a Sunday, by the time we were ordering our dessert, the restaurant was almost completely filled indoors and a few tables left available outdoors. There is metered parking on the road or paid parking structures not too far away.

The restaurant is cozy with a welcoming atmosphere. Well appointed tables and an important part…comfortable chairs. Splashes of color and decor reminded us of their proud Ukrainian heritage. Service from the staff was well coordinated, friendly and never intrusive.

I felt I was being fed a family’s long standing recipes of traditional specialties. The condiments, creamed sauces or microgreenery complimented each individual dish.
Even a simple dinner roll was elevated by its absorption of garlic oils and a house made spread.
Soup
***** Ukrainian Borscht with Pampushka- I had mine with beef. Tender chunks of meat, comforting broth and generous slivers of beets all blended well. My first time trying Pampushka (sweet garlicky herbed soft roll) was absolutely perfect, my taste buds were very happy. Perfect way to start the meal.

Appetizers
*****Varenyky dumpling(you choose the filling), we chose sauerkraut and one with short rib filling. Dipped in sour cream…heavenly! Pastas tasted house made, I could have asked but we were busy eating and dipping.

*****Deruny (potato pancakes) a bit denser than latkes but so delicious. I layered mine with more sour cream and a portion of their tasty mushroom mixture.

***** Banosh – with pieces of bacon, goat cheese with a polenta cake

***** Banosh Vegetarian- also a Ukrainian polenta cake, “magic”Mushroom Mixture and goat cheese.

**** Chicken Kyiv with Mashed Potatoes- classic or with mushrooms. First slice into the chicken breast oozed their popular mushroom mixture. It quickly became a favorite filling of mine, used on several other dishes. The more mushrooms the better!

Dessert
***** Ukrainian Honey Cake- understandably award winning with 5 layers of sweet honey and cream cheese which was not overly sweet and delicately moist. The edible flower was a perfect touch!

This meal was completely memorable and the perfect way to be introduced to a new cuisine that can be truly appreciated. No doubt I will need to return with family or friends and Ukrainian food has won a new fan.

My only regret is that they are located in Bethesda or D.C., if a restaurant opened in Columbia, I would gladly become a regular. I’ll just need to make a special trip here again and again. Highly recommended for all ages.

We tried Ruta for the first time recently, and were very favorably impressed. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable, and offers traditional Ukrainian fare at reasonable prices. We started our meal with The Patriot drink, a tasty and sweet concoction that when served mimics the colors of the Ukrainian flag. For our appetizer we ordered Deruny (fried potato pancakes), which are crispy on the outside, and served with sour cream and a mushroom topping. For our entrees, we ordered the Meat Holubtsi (stuffed cabbage), which is served with sour cream, and the Chicken Kyiv with mashed potatoes. All of our food was served at medium-high temperature, not piping hot, which was perfect, and allowed us to enjoy the delicious flavors. This is true comfort food, tasty, hearty, and filling. Portions were perfect, and left us feeling satisfied without being stuffed. For our desert, we split a slice of Ukrainian Honey Cake, which was sweet and very moist…the perfect way to end our dinner. If we had to pick something about Ruta we didn’t like, it would be the noise level, which was very loud…but that would not deter us from another visit there. We will definitely be back.

The Ukrainian/Russian food was quite good, although the prices for both the food and drinks felt a bit on the higher side. The service was satisfactory. The seating, however, was fairly close together, which made it easy to overhear nearby conversations and limited privacy. Not ideal place for a date. Paid street parking ️ in the area was somewhat difficult to find, but with a little patience it was possible.
Overall, I would rate ⭐️ the experience 6.5 out of 10.

I’ve been there twice already, and I can’t tell which was my favorite visit. Tried both Borschts, can recommend them. The main dishes are pretty good as well – they have some excellent Banosh.

As for desserts, get the honey cake. They’re all good, but that one’s spectacular.

There’s a bar and table service, local and Ukrainian beverages, and excellent service all around. Great place for lunch or dinner!

My boyfriend and I just moved to the area and had a fabulous first date night out at Ruta! The drinks were good and interesting (if you’re feeling ambitious try the trio of shooters at the bottom on the back of the drink menu). We loved everything we got from borscht to deruny and varenyky. The staff was friendly and helpful when we weren’t sure if something was GF. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable with a few families and birthday groups. We can’t wait to go back!

Fabulous restaurant — enjoyed it immensely. The beet with horseradish salad (tsvikli), chicken Kyiv with mushrooms and the pork ribs were delicious. (Do ask for salt and pepper if you need them — I found that pepper gave a nice lift to the chicken Kyiv and the ribs.) Among the varenyky (dumplings), the sauerkraut option is a winner. The honey cake is a delightful dessert — light and just sweet enough.

The drinks menu includes excellent Ukrainian red wines and an exceptionally smooth brandy, also from Ukraine. The service was attentive and pleasant and the setting enjoyable. Ruta is an excellent addition to the Bethesda restaurant scene — we look forward to returning.

I went with friends for an amazing lunch! There were four of us so we were able to sample a variety of the lunch menu, including the deruny, the varenyky assortment, meat holubtsi, the farmer’s cheese pancakes, and the chicken and mushroom crepes– all of which were wonderful but the crepes were incredible! We indulged in some dessert including the sweet dumplings and the Ruta cake, both wonderful. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the space was beautiful and comfortable. I can’t wait to go back for dinner to try the stroganoff and some of the cocktail menu.

My mother’s family is from the Ukraine so I grew up with Ukrainian food as part of our meals. Some of the names of menu items were a little different but the descriptions let me know it was the same foods I was used to. The “green borscht” is what I grew up knowing as chivey soup or sorrel soup. It was a little different but very tasty. I would have liked a bit more sorrel for my tastes but I enjoyed it.
