The ambience was excellent beautifully decorated with a cozy holiday feel, making it a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy the evening. The atmosphere alone sets a very positive tone.
We ordered popcorn shrimp with fries for our daughter. At first glance, I honestly thought it might be just average, but once our food arrived, that assumption quickly changed. The food was delicious. We tried the flounder topped with buttered shrimp and the blackened mahi-mahi tacos, and both dishes were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. Even our daughter loved the food we ordered, which says a lot!
The prices are on the higher side, as clearly mentioned on the menu, but the quality and taste of the food made it worth it. We also tried a couple of cocktails from the menu—those weren’t our favorite—but the food more than made up for it.
Overall, this is definitely a place where families and groups can relax, enjoy great food, and soak in a wonderful atmosphere. We’d happily come back for the food again.
We ordered the oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer, they were delicious. Oysters were huge and very tasty! We also ordered from the Valentine’s Day menu the D Street Grouper and the Strip steak! Both were delicious and good size portion.
The service actually could’ve been a little bit better, they weren’t as a tentative as they could have been, for a 20% tip. As a matter of fact, you never even got our servers name presented to us. They also add on some fee to the bill. She didn’t really come back by and say hello and check on us very much at all. Also, we ordered the oysters to come out as an appetizer, and they came out with the meal, which made things a little bit crowded and that just makes the food get cold.
There was some live music, and the atmosphere is really cool in the bar area. If the weather was a little bit warmer, we would’ve sat outside no problem.
Overall, we really like the place, and recommend it, and we would come back, just hope the service was a little bit better.
Valentine’s Day 2026 we were excited to read they had a special menu, a small menu with only three choices but nonetheless enticing enough for us to be excited to share a sunset at Runaway, hear the sunset bell and enjoy their food. We went early with a reservation (lots of open tables so didn’t need the reservation but good to have). We ordered identical specialty beach drinks, they arrived separately and tasted noticeably different, odd but not a show stopper, one tasted better than the other, slightly irritating for a specialty cocktail for $15 each. We had chosen ahead of time the Butter Poached Lobster and New York Strip, on ordering the server informed us that they were out of lobster, this is 4.45pm at the beginning of dinner service and a huge disappointment. We pivoted back to the regular menu and order one Runaway Grouper ($44) and the New York Strip ($39) the later from the special menu. The steak was delicious, comforting and served hot with Bordelaise Sauce and mash potatoes. The Runaway Grouper did not live up to the pictures online or previous visits and came to the table cold with cold mash potato and a tiny amount of the Lemon Butter Sauce that accompanies the dish. The server offered to have the dish remade but by now we had three strikes, odd tasting drinks, out of the special menu food by 4.45pm and a Runaway Grouper not well executed. The server was overhead to be apologizing to other tables as well so not a good service for Runaway.
We will be back to Runaway at some point but feedback is important and to be shared. A high end dining restaurant, with high end prices has no excuses for being busy.
The food was okay, but the oysters I received were the worst I’ve ever tried and I was raised in the area. Super dry and the cheese was so hard that I couldn’t get through it to the oyster with the little plastic utensil they give you for them. I ate two of them and left the rest. There was literally no moisture left inside of the shell. I took the salmon pesto bowl to go and the pesto sauce was the star. Serving portions are pretty small. Pictures of the oysters for your enjoyment.
My wife and I came to Runaway Island for the first time and everything was amazing. Our waitress Chenelle was outstanding! Polite & punctual. We had the spinach dip, chicken strips and fries, 12 oz new York striploin with asparagus and mashed potatoes, and warm brownie with ice cream dessert. Everything was amazing. I was on cloud nine eating my food. You could almost cut the steak with a fork! If you’re ever in Panama City Beach. I highly recommend you check this place out!
