French cuisine can be hard to get right, but Rue Cler executes to perfection. From the first dish all the way through every entree, the kitchen is able to season and cook their magnificent and authentic creations to perfection. The escargot were a surefire highlight, and nothing disappointed. If you love french cuisine and are in Durham, come here.

Amazing meal. Absolutely delicious! Our server was so helpful explaining menu items and suggesting wines to paircwith our selections. Very competent. A wonderful dining experience.

The food and wine were excellent. The only thing that was a little disappointing was how crispy the bread was on the cheese platter. The bead was a bit too thick to be cracker like and too crispy to be enjoyable as bread.

Rue Cler has been on my list for years and I finally got to go. The food, service, and atmosphere was great. I was planning on adding into my rotation until I got strong food poisoning. I think it was the oysters since my fellow dinner mates didn’t get sick.

Lovely small vibes upscale French restaurant. Perfect for a nice dinner date night, however, does cater to large groups too (reserve ahead of time). Loved each dish, everything was well presented and our server was incredibly knowledgeable about food and wine pairings.
They did an incredible job serving and waiting a large group of 15-20 people and was thoroughly impressed at timings of every dish. With a group our size, it took all in around 2-2.5 hours of dining.
The cocktails were good, ordered a boulevardier, but were nothing special. Typical house liquors. Like the lighting arrangements here.

I’m glad my wife and I got to check out the restaurant to check off our list. However it left a bad taste in our mouths!

I was also blown away by the cost. We dropped $271. We don’t believe it was worth that cost. You would have thought that kind of bill would have included a bunch of drinks, but it didn’t. I was very disappointed that my check arrived with a mandatory 18% tip on it. It was good service, but was bothered that I had no choice.

Plus the restaurant was ridiculously hot! I sweated through dinner. That really killed any sort of vibe.

I don’t see my wife and I ever going back.

Amazing service, amazing food. Waiter Bennett was knowledgeable and attentive. The sole was some of the best I’ve had.

Really good food with a cozy atmosphere. Escargot and the foie gras were next level!

Rude customer service. We were forced to take a table by the doors to the kitchen, and when we asked to switch tables, we were not allowed to (we were one of three groups in the entire restaurant). We were there until closing time, and our requested table (by the window) was open until the very end. In fact, about 1/3 of the tables were still open, so no decent reason for us to be forced to that table. For $40 per person, I expected better.

Small thing: I would expect an expensive French restaurant to serve bread. Very surprised they didn’t.

POSITIVES:
Excluding the customer service experience, the food was great and good ambience (though I wish there was music). This service single-handedly worsened an otherwise great experience.

PHOTOS:
1. Mushrooms (side, pretty solid)
2. Salmon (cooked well and tasty, but slightly salty. Not the biggest fan of the hollandaise sauce, but that is personal preference)
3. Chicken (filling and tasty)
4. Risotto (tasty but small quantity. Better as an appetizer, not too filling)
5. Requested table, clearly unused and available (as it was throughout the night)

My wife and I had a last-minute change of plans on Wednesday night and found ourselves downtown. Rue Cler had a couple of open seats at the bar. The atmosphere was incredible — every single person greeted us and talked to us (including the chef). Our meals were amazing — I’m vegetarian, and normally the vegetarian entree is an afterthought, but the vegetarian dish on the menu was hands-down the best vegetarian entree I’ve ever had, anywhere. We stayed for a few hours and felt like we had slipped into some far-off place–the food and drinks were perfect, the atmosphere was warm and friendly (every regular who came in was greeted by name by all the staff), and it was just a rare perfect meal at a restaurant. Thank you so much — can’t wait to come back.
