One of, if not the, oldest diners in San Diego. This 24 hour diner on El Cajon Blvd in North Park is really popular for many reasons but for some reason I had never tried it until this past weekend. I say that as someone from San Diego whose family has been here since the late 1980s. Inside is very large and has many different seating options from booth, to counter, to table. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. They have a very large menu with all sorts of diner classics on it. There’s also a large free parking lot attached so parking is easy to find.

The only issue we had was that the food itself was not the best, it was not bad, but the experience was better than the food. We started off with a Cinnamon Roll and thought it was pretty good, but it was not gooey enough in my opinion, and it was overly large in size but was not large in flavor. For my meal, I chose the Chilaquiles with green sauce and even though I love spicy food, I thought they were overly spicy and my eggs were a bit overdone. It is diner pricing so it’s not really a big deal but I would like to try again to see if I had a one off experience. I would suggest if you are in the area or are interested in San Diego dining history.

Open 24 hrs, located in North Park on the corner of El Cajon Blvd and Kansas St with a small private parking lot.
As we entered, this All-American Diner took me back to the 80’s, lovely! It appears that they have a self-seating policy. The restaurant was clean, organized, fully staffed, and has outside seating.
We visited this Saturday morning, so it was busy. I had their ‘French Toast breakfast’. The toast itself was delicious; thick, with a rich, yellow color, but the bacon was overcooked and dry. My coffee was a little too bitter for my taste, though some creamer fixed it. My cousin’s ‘Classic Benedict’ was prepared well, but we both felt it lacked flavor.
Service was good, every staff member was working hard. Our food runner was very friendly as he delivered our meals. Despite the busyness, the staff did not rush customers.
Overall we had a good breakfast experience here and will be back to try their ‘Chicken & Waffles’ and lunch menu items as I kept eyeing their delicious looking, big burgers!

Best place for breakfast and quick lunch/dinner.This is a historical Restaurant that takes you back in time.

If you are visiting San Diego, I highly recommend that you visit this restaurant.

Quick service, very reasonable price for the good portion of food they serve. I felt like, I was having my breakfast from the comfort of my home.

Thank you so much for the care and attention you give your customers.

I hope to be back soon.

Taco salad was so good especially with the salsa. She’ll was flaky and so fresh. Scooping up the salad with the crispy flaky shell was delicious. My waiter was kind and efficient. Salad would serve two people. Well worth it.

Such a fun diner to go to. The vibes and the customer service were amazing. I ordered the hot chocolate and the famous chicken and waffles. Hot cocoa was yummy, but the chicken and waffles were alright. Kind of dry. I would definitely go back just for the service, and maybe try some of their other dishes and desserts.

Another visit to Rudford’s and to hopefully Katch one of my “colleagues”, if you will, real-life classmates from culinary school.

He was so friendly greeting me in the parking lot. Dunno quite what he was doing out there. It has been some time since we last spoke. Nick is quite the guy. Congratulations on his successes.

Inside decore is always entertaining. It’s hard to believe this place has been operation since the days of President Kennedy. Happy 75th anniversary.

Food is always huge servings of darn near anything an American diner should have. I don’t think anything is left out. I feel Rudford’s menu puts the Cracker Barrel to shame. I think the menu is even more diverse than Cheese Cake Factory. I mean, who has an abundant open-face Hot Beef Sandwich? I had to find out just what it was so I ordered it. The wife had a super good, anticipated BLT. Fries were abundant, properly cooked and served with just the right amount of salt.

A bad ass venture again to this historical hot spot.

Free parking in back.

Continued successes.

I’m curious about the culinary decision to include lettuce, onions, and tomatoes on a Mushroom Swiss burger. The french fries were unsatisfactory, though the onion rings were acceptable. Dennys is far far better.

8.5/10. If I want a nice casual brunch spot I come here. I usually get the Monte Cristo which is not on the menu but the staff have always been very accommodating with special requests. I’ve also been here late at night and I believe I got the bluecheese burger last time which was also a great option. Parking is tight at times but everytime I’ve been here I’ve been able to find parking in their free lot or on the street late at night. This place has been around forever and it has cool vintage diner vibes.

Rudford’s offers a great nostalgic trip back to my childhood. It is a classic 1950’s, 1960’s diner. With seating options of tables, booths or the counter, this 24 hour a day restaurant offers traditional Amerixan diner food, large portions, reasonable prices and friendly service. While others in our party ordered chicken straps, burgers, fries etc.. I almost jokingly ordered the New York steak dinner. I had reasonable expectations, it’s a diner, not a 5 star restaurant. The meal came with garlic bread, mashed potatoes with canned gravy, a choice of vegetables (green beans or peas), and soup or salad. I had the bean soup, appeared home made and was enjoyable. The real surprise was the steak. I love a good steak and am used to spending 2 or 3 times as much for a steak as my whole dinner at Rudford’s. It was a large cut, I am guessing 12 oz. It came out a perfect medium rare. I’d venture choice grade, not overwhelmingly flavorful, but still a good steak especially for the price.
Overall a great time, friendly staff, they were very busy, so service dragged on occasionally, but nothing worthy of complaining about.

We left very satisfied, having had a good food and a good time. A step back in Americana.

I am looking forward to t
Visiting again to try their breakfast options.

If you happen to be in the area or just came back from TJ or Rosarito, you gotta try this spot! Diner lovers will LOVE this iconic family owned and operated restaurant. I had a burger that was epic! They also have a monster burger challenge, and they you 30min to finish it…….deadly! The food looks and tastes great, the portions are spectacular, and the place is open 24hrs! The shakes are like when you go to “Bob’s”, you get glass plus the metal container with another “almost full shake” inside. Aw yeeeeah! The regular size burger is beautifully cooked and is a very hefty size, i have no idea how someone can actually finish the “Big Nick Burger”. Definitely stop and give it a go! (Check out the wall of fame and the various objects in the restaurant).
