Social Profile:

Ruby King Bakery has served Oakland since 2002, offering traditional Guangzhou and Hong Kong-style baked goods made fresh daily. With roots in the food industry dating back to 1972, we’re known for our egg tarts, curry beef puffs, baked chicken pies, and simple, handmade cakes for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. Nothing here is ever sold overnight – everything is baked fresh each morning by hand. Now being passed down to a longtime apprentice, Ah-Hua, who shares our commitment to preserving tradition and flavor. Ruby King is one of the few bakeries still offering authentic Chinese pastries made the old-fashioned way.

Their egg tarts are a bit on the smaller side but held a lot of custard. Also tried the paper cup cakes, which were ok- not as soft as I expected.

The bread is so delicious and affordable. It’s very hard to find a traditional Hong Kong style bakery like this. It’s a family owned business with very nice staff. I got the egg tart, baked chicken pie, and curry beef puff. I would come here again for sure.

I had a delightful assortment of treats from Ruby King Bakery Café, including a dozen egg tarts, 6 curry beef puffs, and an 8-inch Mixed Fruit birthday cake, all totaling around $55.

The standout feature of this bakery is undoubtedly their superbly crafted, flaky pastries. The real star of the show was the Mixed Fruit birthday cake. If you find traditional store-bought birthday cakes overly sweet, Ruby King Bakery Café offers a perfect alternative. The sponge of the cake was exceptionally soft, and the overall sweetness was just right—not overpowering.

The combination of great value and high quality makes Ruby King Bakery Café a must-visit for pastry enthusiasts. I highly recommend it, especially if you prefer a more balanced and less sugary birthday cake experience.

*Tip: I placed a phone call to order the birthday cake two days in advance, though it seems they also have ready-to-go birthday cakes available in-store.

Pretty good local bakery within Chinatown Oakland. We were able to buy some delicious goodies to bring home from our trip to Chinatown. It is a smaller bakery with a good selection and hot coffee! Service was good and quick despite the lines due to social distancing during the pandemic.

Great place to hang out in the morning and the place opens early. You’ll have competition for tables from the “regulars”. You won’t go wrong with the coffee and freshly baked white or yellow egg custard tart.

Their freshly baked char-shiu pineapple bun is the best I’ve had in a very long time.

Very nice flaky pastries. Had a curry beef puff, chicken pie and coconut twist. The fillings for the savory stuff were actually quite sweet, which balanced out the pastry which isn’t very sweet at all. Made the mistake of eating the coconut twist in my office, which spread crumbs all over the place. Would recommend eating outside because it’s so flaky.

Would love to try the Dan tat next time — they sold out by the time I came!

Love getting my cakes here!! Bread always taste so fluffy and good, never going back to anything else. The only thing is that they only accept cash and limited parking.

Ruby King is a hole in the wall bakery, overshadowed by the Napolean bakery up the block. Ruby King has some amazing, flaky, egg tarts ($1), bbq puff pastry and curry beef puff pastry. They are best when you get them early in the morning when they are still hot. You have to ask for the egg tarts, they are not on the display shelf. Their mini apple pie is pretty good too with chunks of apples inside. Great customer service.

We wanted to try some mooncakes and decided to get a variety of items for Sunday brunch. No parking but we knew that. The lady was helpful once she figured out we were doing a brunch.

The mooncakes were mostly new flavors (e..g. lotus seed)for us. Sweet and extremely dense, think plutonium. Perhaps an acquired taste.

Pork buns were very good, also coconut and pineapple pastries. The curry beef bun was a standout. Nice alternative to usual brunch. Well worth coming back.

For those who are not familiar with Chinese style sponge cakes that are generally bought for special occasions, these cakes are lighter and spongier so to speak than their American counterparts.

In addition they are not as sweet and don’t contain much butter. Filling in the middle is mixed fruit (canned and fresh) along with light whipped cream. Strawberry or peach only filling can be requested as well. More decorative cream and fruit slices in the top and sides complete the arrangement.

Ruby Kings version of the sponge is the best of the 3 bakeries that are in the general area. Smoother and more moist than fortune bakery but not damp like Napoleon. Of course this is a subjective opinion.

If you have friends who know someone who can pick one up, ask to have them buy one. They’re different and delicious.

Cakes can be ordered ahead a day in advance. A 12 inch diameter cake will cost about $55
