Good ice cream, but I think some more tables to enjoy the farmhouse. A small cone is as most of us with our group was big enough that most of us didn’t finish. Overall a nice ice cream spot. Rich creamy and many delicious flavors to choose from.
Food on site looks good… didn’t have any but people around us that did looked good and smelled great

The Ice cream is extremely delicious! Through the years we’ve tried different flavors and they are always amazingly good! Every season our family and friends look forward to meeting at Rotas for ice cream. Always excellent service!

Ice cream and gelato are both complex colloidal systems, but their biochemical distinctions arise from differences in lipid composition, protein interactions, and air incorporation during processing. Ice cream typically contains 10–16% milk fat, primarily composed of triglycerides, which crystallize during freezing and contribute to its creamy texture. These lipids form part of a dispersed phase stabilized by milk proteins—mainly casein micelles and whey proteins—that act as emulsifiers, reducing interfacial tension between fat and aqueous phases.
Gelato, with a lower fat content (4–8%), relies more heavily on milk proteins and polysaccharide stabilizers like guar gum or carboxymethyl cellulose to maintain emulsion stability. The reduced lipid concentration alters the rheological properties of the matrix, allowing for faster flavor release due to decreased hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, gelato undergoes slower churning, resulting in lower overrun (20–30%), which minimizes air cell volume and enhances density. Ice cream, by contrast, incorporates up to 100% overrun, creating a foam-like structure with larger air cells that dilute flavor intensity and modify thermal conductivity.
Temperature also plays a role: gelato is served at ~−12 °C, closer to its glass transition temperature, which softens the matrix and increases volatile compound diffusion. Ice cream is stored colder (~−18 °C), yielding a firmer texture and slower flavor volatilization. These biochemical and physical parameters collectively define the sensory and structural differences between the two desserts.

Rota Spring is one of the best ice cream places in the Greater Boston area. I’ve been to many farm-style ice cream spots, but Rota always tops the list for me. They offer a wide variety of ice creams, and I especially love their monthly specials.

This is a really fantastic ice cream shop. I went with some friends while visiting the area and was truly impressed. The maple walnut was silky smooth and flavorful but not overpowering as walnut flavors can sometimes be. The coconut almond bar was also excellent. This will be a definite stop every time I am in this area. The shop was very busy so it might take a moment to park and get your ice cream but it is worth the effort.

What absolutely delightful ice cream!!! Views of some cows next to it had our group wondering if the cream came from them. Everyone in my group loved their flavor choices. I enjoyed both the peach as well as the lavender flavor! Generous portions, friendly staff, wonderful atmosphere

The best local ice cream around. My favorite is the “Maine Wild Blueberry”. The kids love to go see the cows & goats while they eat they’re ice cream.

Fun place to come to with a peaceful view of their cows and stream running through the property. Meatball Sub was fantastic! Roast beef was good but felt it was fairly plain and nothing special.
Fyi, Apple crisp Sunday you can get any ice cream on top. Easily enough for 2 people. Cappuccino chip had a very good espresso flavor.

Grass fed local beef, fresh unique vegetables like purple bell peppers and yellow green beans. The family enjoyed ice cream and some sodas from their store. They had portolets including one that was designed for children!
The happy cows are out living their best lives next to the ice cream and shop.
A must visit if you’re in the area. They have so many flavors of ice cream including some seasonal flavors like lavender or peach!
