We went to the cold opening of Roppongi in Imperial Beach and it was great! We have heard a lot about it but it had been closed for a while so it is good to see a popular San Diego restaurant come back. We had several tapas plates and a lot of sushi which was excellent! Some of the best sushi I have had in San Diego, Chef Mark came out and helped make the night very special. Our table had an excellent view of the beach and the service was great as well. I highly recommend Roppongi for a great atmosphere, and even better food. The Toro roll was my favorite. They have vegetarian sushi options that were made with tomato or mushroom and were great looking and delicious too.

This place was strange. When you walk in, they ask if you want Sammy’s or Roppongi. We asked if we could sit down and order from either restaurant, but the waiter said no. Half of the outside space is for Sammy’s and the other half is for Roppongi, and you have to choose before being seated. It felt confusing and disjointed from the start.

We chose Roppongi because we saw online they had sushi and we were craving sushi with a sunset view. We were seated, given menus, and hot hand towels. We ordered drinks, but even with the place being slow (maybe five tables total between both restaurants), it took almost 30 minutes to get them. The cocktails were NOT good. Both tasted flat and salty.

During that whole wait, we had no water service, no napkins or place settings, and no one checked on us. When our waiter finally came back, we asked about the menu because it had no sushi, no raw fish, not even a poke bowl. The closest option was the crab stack. She explained that they did have sushi, but the sushi chef left to open a new restaurant in La Jolla, so they had to take it off the menu. Very strange decision for a new restaurant.

We ordered the lobster dumplings on her recommendation. They came out quick relative to the drink timing, but we waited about five minutes before they brought silverware or plates. We just sat there laughing at how comical the whole experience was. When we finally tried them, they were clearly frozen dumplings, nothing special. After that, we got the check and decided to go somewhere else for dinner.

It’s a shame because the view is gorgeous and the restaurant has a lot of potential. But the management seems to be the real problem. Slow cocktails, slow service, a menu completely changed within months of opening, and no sense of care from the staff.

We won’t be returning.

We visited the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by its beautiful location right on the beach inside the Pier South hotel.

I really like the duck quesadillas, ahi poke, and hamachi taco appetizers. Food was very good and will visit the restaurant again.

Roppongi Asian Bistro is a wonderful place to enjoy a variety of flavorful Asian dishes. The food is fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of rich taste, with options that make it easy for everyone to find something they love. Every plate feels carefully made and satisfying.
The service is top-notch—the staff are polite, attentive, and quick to bring out your food. They also do a great job explaining the menu and making sure you feel comfortable.
The atmosphere is stylish and welcoming, perfect for both casual meals and special nights out. With great food, friendly service, and a pleasant environment, Roppongi Asian Bistro is definitely worth visiting again.

I had high expectations for this new spot in IB, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the hype. I went on a Saturday with a 6:30 PM reservation, and while I understand restaurants can get busy, the service was disorganized and clearly understaffed. I’m not blaming the staff personally—they were doing the best they could—but it was obvious they were overwhelmed.

It took a long time to be greeted, drinks were delayed, and the overall flow just felt chaotic. I really wanted to love this place, but the lack of organization made it hard to enjoy. The food was pretty good though, we got 2 sushi rolls and the curry shrimp noodles . Hoping they can get things smoothed out because the place has potential, but as of now, it missed the mark.

The atmosphere is the selling point of this restaurant you sit right up against the beach! Our server was very kind and friendly and fast he was a gem. Our biggest challenge was the food. The two of us generally share a meal. We are both female mother and daughter. And we don’t eat a full meal alone. So we ordered an appetizer and a meal to share and cocktails. The meal was so salty which FYI I am a salt fan. I love potato chips, pickles, all of the salty items on every menu, but to be honest, it was too salty for me as well as my mom. Would I go back for the weight staff and cocktails? Absolutely I was just challenged with how salty the dish was

Hey! I came back since they were nice enough to send me a gift card for my previous experience. This time around was much better! If you like onion rings they were different but very good, the pork belly drunken noodles was an awesome dish & the Mongolian duck quesadillas was different as well but delicious! For a Weds, service was great but a tad slow which is no big deal. 1 girl had to wait on all the tables. Still no Sushi Chef so no sushi. I still recommend coming 4-6 happy hour. I’ll be back. 11/5/25 I changed my rating as of today. Thanks, Cassandra!
Well, I checked this place out that just was changed in the resort. The menu is totally awesome! Go between 4-6 for 50% off on certain parts of food & drink menu on the main menu. The view outside is awesome since you overlook The Pacific! Service was on the slow side but very friendly! Unfortunately, I had a few different items since I’m a foodie & retired from the business after 45 yrs. 1 dish in General was terrible at $59. The Short Rib Entree…..the chef/mgmt must be crazy cause the potato croquettes that came with it was nothing but mini hash browns you’d get from McDonalds, roasted red peppers were out of a can & skimpy on the Demi-Glacé! They offer an array of Sushi but wasn’t available which I wanted to order as well. Let’s be real here….for an impressive menu & very high prices, the food should equal or be at the top if it’s game! Spending $140 for 1 person may sound like alot but only if the experience merits it. Good Luck!

They switched this from Toasted; so sad
Toasted was amazing. Toasted had delicious foods. The new place has an eh menu. It’s weird because no one is there to seat you. And the waiters lag. The bathroom is in the “spa” that they have .
It can get cold outside but they have heaters.
The food I posted is from toasted; the new menu is just not it… bad move on their end

We really enjoyed our night out here, Jordan was our waiter he was very attentive and quick to answer our questions with recommendations of food choices which were absolutely delicious. All the food was exceptional but i really enjoyed the handmade lobster dumplings. The cocktail service was exceptional as well. Highly recommend coming here for a dinner out and if you’re lucky enough to get Jordan as your waiter you will be impressed with the five star service you receive.
