0% edible – Stop burning the chicken into charcoal
I’m not a huge fan of the temperatures of the food. Warm meat placed on top of cold rice + cold vegetables is not very pleasant. The sauce is too overpowering when mixed in. Turns it into a slop bowl.
The volume and amount of vegetables and beans in the bowls are nice 🙂 Main redeeming quality.

My friend and I both got bowls with the roots rice, greens, BBQ tofu, and other stuff for dinner last night. They were so good that we are getting the same again today. Their tofu is really tasty, and so are their dressings. Really good vegan options. The cilantro dressing is fantastic of you’re getting Mexican / southwestern ingredients. They have chipotle Tobasco and Franks original hot sauces. Only slight gripe is the pickled carrots were just regular shredded carrots. But not a big deal. Really tasty for how healthy it is. Probably gluten free too but who knows.

I absolutely love this place. The El Jefe is probably some of the best ingredients I’ve ever had in a bowl. I’ve been coming here for several years and it’s so consistent. The chicken is always cooked perfectly. Fresh avocado, kale, corn, and onion. Some of my favorite food I’ve ever had out. Wish I still lived in Pittsburgh so I could eat here more often. They should put a location in Detroit!!!

Disappointed with My Order – Missing Chicken & Small Portion Despite Instructions
I usually enjoy Roots, but this delivery experience from the Pittsburgh location was really frustrating. I ordered two bowls, and both had issues that made the meal underwhelming.
First, my El Jefe bowl was supposed to include chicken, but there was none at all in the bowl I received (see photos). That’s not just a missing topping—it’s a major ingredient in the dish, and it really threw off the balance and heartiness of the meal.
Second, the second bowl was labeled “make sure bowl is big size” right on the packaging—but it was clearly a small portion (you can see the difference in the photos). It didn’t even come close to what I expected when paying for a large.
I’ve attached pictures of the label, bowls, and packaging so there’s no confusion. Roots, please double check orders before sending them out—this was disappointing and not worth the price.

Used to be a nice place for a healthy bowl, and the portions were pretty generous too, so I felt like I was getting good value. Unfortunately, they seem to have recently switched to much smaller bowls, yet decided to keep the price the same (same price, less food). I asked the staff who confirmed the change and they mentioned that other people had also noticed. It is unfortunate that greed and shrinkflation have taken a hold here. Will probably not return.

Think chipotle, but elevated. we were not looking to dine at roots, but we were looking around, and my vegan friend found the menu to be interesting. I got a chicken bowl over rice and she got a vegan bowl. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The secret is that they toss the rice and the other toppings in a big bowl with the sauce, so that everything is well coated. There is a seating area at the bottom of the restaurant, which feels like a dungeon oh there a couple of high chairs at the store level as well. the prices are different higher than chipotle, and the quantity is also lesser, but given the quality of the ingredients. I think I would be back again.

My daughter’s favorite place to go when she was living in Pittsburgh for college. This place has a lot of varieties of heathy food choices. I couldn’t figure out what I want from the menu, so I just chose the Create Your Own bowl. I tried the roots rice as the base which is seasoned purple rice. This rice tasted very good. I combined roots rice and Arcadian mix (mixed greens) as the base. I chose BBQ tofu for the protein. I added sweet potatoes, beets, charred corn, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, avocado (extra charge), and cilantro lime as my dressing. This dressing is low acidity. It has a hint of honey. This is the best dressing I’ve ever had.
I’m glad I followed my daughter’s suggestion. I definitely will go back here when I’m around this area. I wish they have a restaurant in MD.

I’ve only been once, but holy cow it was delicious. I ordered El Jefe with all the stuff and everything was super fresh and tasty. I went because I was looking for something healthy so I couldn’t have been happier that it actually tasted good.
The only downside was there is only one nice place to sit in the whole restaurant and it was occupied. All the other seating is in the basement which wasn’t inviting.
