I’d describe Rolo’s as a local Cracker Barrel. Lots and lots of generic country cooking dishes are available: meatloaf, chicken and dressing, etc. It’s a moderate size restaurant with a fair amount of seating, and it was busy around lunchtime on a Tuesday. Crowd was mostly older folks.
One thing I was really impressed with was the service. The hostess got me seated right away, the cashier was pleasant when I payed my bill, and most of all, my waitress, Anita, was so nice and friendly. She took great care of me, bringing me a to-go drink before I even had to ask for it. Loved her!
The food, however, was just okay. I guess it was about what you’d expect. I had the chicken fingers, fries, and whole kernel corn, with a roll. Sweet tea to drink. The sweet tea was really good. The French fries were okay, fairly crispy but a little under salted and had a sort of weird greasy aftertaste. The chicken tenders were also okay, but again, kinda bland and stringy, not a ton of meat to them. Lastly, the roll was the Sister Schubert variety (which I don’t mind at all, but I really needed more than one tiny carton of butter), and the corn was flavorless but for a faint saltiness. Not sweet at all, sadly.
I sound harsh; the food wasn’t terrible, and I’d go back to Rolo’s if someone I was with wanted to visit. However, my meal was also around 11 bucks, 13 with tip, and I can get much better tenders and fries elsewhere for less — same with country vegetables. On the whole, just a so-so experience. Big shout-out to Anita, though!
Rolo’s is a traditional diner. The food is inexpensive, the service is good, and the meals were served as ordered and generally very good.
I ordered fried eggs with toast and potatoes. The toast and eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were also very good. They appear to be potatoes that were frozen after being cut into small cubes.
The sausage was also very good. There were two pieces of sausage which I had not expected.
My dining companion ordered a biscuit and a scrambled egg. The biscuit was good but tasted as of it had been frozen and warmed up rather than made from scratch as is the case at some breakfast locations. The top was black as it had been burned rather than cooked to a light brown.
On a subsequent visit at lunch, we ordered the whole catfish (bone-in). Servings are available with one or two fish. One was plenty. It was cooked to a golden brown and had a good taste.
The mashed potatoes and green beans were also very good. The hushpuppies were a little dry for my taste but not inedible by any means.
I suggest trying the peach cobbler for dessert for those who still have an appetite for dessert after a good-sized meal. It was sweet and had good texture and flavor.
Our server was very efficient, friendly, and everything was served quickly.
Overall, this was a good experience.
My plate had some other food items prior to the photo. Thought about it after everyone started raving about their food.
Update:
The peach cobbler is also delicious, although I wish it had more peaches and less “bread”. Sometimes it’s s little too runny as well.
Breakfast is great. I got the French toast, bacon, and biscuit and sausage gravy. My boyfriend got the pancakes with bacon. Everything was good. I really liked the biscuit and sausage gravy. And the pancakes were really fluffy and moist and delicious.
They used to have a chocolate gravy biscuit, that was really good, but unfortunately they don’t sell that one anymore.
