Roll Roll: A Culinary Haven for Sushi Lovers in London, ON

Everything I ordered tasted a day old. The nori on every roll was leathery and extremely difficult to chew, and the rice was dry. The purple potato was very dry, and the salmon did not taste fresh at all. I ordered two Golden Tiger Rolls, a Spicy Salmon Roll, a California Roll, a Yamyam Roll, a Spicy Crab Roll, and a Yam & Avocado Roll (total was $69 after my $20 UberEats discount). After trying a few pieces, my friend and I threw the rest away because we were genuinely concerned about the freshness and didn’t want to get sick.
I called the restaurant to ask when the sushi was prepared and whether it might have been made in advance. They told me everything was made fresh to order. They were apologetic and offered a $30 credit if I call in to place another order, which I appreciated, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be coming back. If a restaurant charges premium prices (e.g., $17.95 for 8 pieces in the golden tiger roll), I expect premium quality every time.
Admittedly, I live in Toronto with an abundance of choice, and have had sushi more time’s I can count since being home, but nothing has quite matched the satisfaction of what I’ve had in Japan. So when my brother in law brought home the Party Tray from Roll Roll Sushi in London’s Wortley Village, I braced myself for the familiar disappointment of North American interpretations. What arrived didn’t just surprise me…it excited me.
This is far from the basic sushi you get at the average takeout spot.
Heres the difference. The rice here isn’t an afterthought. It’s cooked perfectly. Seasoned with precision and served at the ideal temperature, the kind of rice that Japanese sushi chefs spend years perfecting, and unless you’ve been to Japan it’s difficult to quite understand the level of care, appreciation and love that they put into the rice and how the rice is often the difference maker vs the fish. That alone would distinguish an outstanding sushi restaurant from a mediocre one. But here, the fish also stands up to global standards: clean, vibrant, cut with a deft hand that lets each slice shine. This is sushi that could sit alongside offerings in Tokyo or Osaka without embarrassment.
The chef at Roll Roll has clearly spent years honing technique, respecting simplicity over flashiness. Of course there’s still the requirement of satisfying the North American palette as evident of some items on the menu but there’s still balance, intention, and freshness.
The big takeaway here is that sadly Roll Roll is so far from home. If Roll Roll opened a sister restaurant in Toronto, it wouldn’t just add to the city’s crowded sushi scene but would redefine expectations there too. Because what this sushi shop embodies isn’t just fresh fish on rice, but a philosophy: simplicity respected, ingredients honored, and technique perfected.
*Edit to add photos. We ordered Roll Roll this past weekend for my daughters birthday. It was incredible as always:)
