A fair warning to anyone planning a visit: this is North Carolina–style barbecue. Most, if not all, of the sauces lean heavily on a vinegar base, which is very different from the sweeter or smokier Southern barbecue many people are used to. While the meat itself was well cooked and tender, it didn’t have that deep, smoky flavor that I personally associate with traditional Southern barbecue.
That said, the atmosphere was excellent. The space is open and inviting with plenty of seating, making it a comfortable place to dine in. The staff were overly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely appreciative that we gave the restaurant a try, which always goes a long way.
While I don’t know if Rodney Scott’s will be my first choice when I’m craving barbecue—especially since I tend to prefer places like Full Moon—I am glad to see it here. It brings something different to the local food scene, and variety is always a good thing.
I truly hope this location thrives and finds continued success. If you enjoy vinegar-based barbecue or are simply curious to try something new, I definitely recommend stopping by and giving Rodney Scott’s BBQ a try.
If you don’t like vinegar based sauces, you may complain, aside from that everything is insanely delicious.
We HIGHLY recommend the Brisket. The bark was excellent. The pulled pork beats any in Birmingham. The Turkey was thick sliced and will head you to tryptophan comma. Everyone raved about the Mac-n-cheese… can we find THAT recipe?
The Nana pudding was a great treat to top it off.
South Birmingham / North Shelby County and Chelsea has waited a LONG time for such a great restaurant. What a fantastic rebuild of the former Treetop Family Adventure location.
Well done Pihakis Restaurant Group for bringing Rodney Scott’s, Hero Diner, Luca and Lucy, and Little Donkey to Chelsea. We look forward to many years of eating, celebrating and gathering together at this beautiful addition.
I had the Rib and Whole Hog combo with Mac and Cheeae and Baked beans. The Mac and cheese was nice with lots of cheese. The baked beans where delicious as well with a nice smokey flavor and just the right amount of sweetness. Now for the meat. The Ribs where juicy and delicious alone, but with the Bama 16 sauce they where perfect. Tne whole hog pulled pork was great with Rodneys Carolina sauce. I will definatly be back.
