Last weekend, we took a trip to Abraham Lake. Because of the cold weather, I was craving a hot, soupy dish to warm up, so I searched for a Vietnamese restaurant on the way back. I stopped at Rocky Mountain House as it was the most convenient spot. Since it’s a small town with few Vietnamese options, I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary.
However, when my bowl of Pho arrived, I was truly surprised to find the wide rice noodles, just like the ones back in Vietnam where I grew up. Not many people might know this, but in our country, “authentic” Pho should ideally use these wide noodles—something I’ve found quite difficult to track down in Calgary, where I currently live.
As for the broth, it was excellent—naturally sweet and savory without being overloaded with MSG. Unlike many other places I’ve tried, this broth didn’t leave my throat feeling dry or parched. The flavor truly reminded me of the authentic Pho from my life in Vietnam, a taste I’ve been searching for across many restaurants in major Canadian cities.
While it might not be 100% identical to the Pho back home, it is certainly the closest I’ve found in Canada so far. Between the use of traditional wide noodles and a properly simmered broth that doesn’t rely on MSG to cut costs, I believe the owner is truly passionate and serves food with genuine integrity.
For me, this is a must-try restaurant if you ever visit this beautiful town. I’ll likely be stopping by every time I crave a bowl of Pho that tastes like home. I’ve attached some photos below—please excuse my lack of photography skills! I look forward to trying more dishes here next time.

Everything was amazing I already knew it was going to be good when I walked in even the water is good. [Edit: my 11 year old wrote that part. We then proceeded to order and eat. The service is great and the food came out so fast that the 2 kids I was with were blown away. Then, trying Vietnamese food for their first times, they were basically yelling about how incredible their dishes were. (One had pho the other had grilled lemongrass chicken rice.) I love Vietnamese food and am thrilled that a) this restaurant has opened in Rocky, and b) it is some of the best I’ve tried. Please come support this fantastic local gem!]

These guys are a little more authentic vietnamese than what many are used to. They also have a more ‘self serve’ style of restaurant, which is more common to the culture. I think it throws some people who dont realize this is about as authentic as youre going to find, both in food and dining experience, which in my opinion, makes this place a rare gem.

Don’t go in here if youre expecting the ‘same old’. The food here is an experience; not just food. If you have a preference for the more westernized Asian cuisine, this place is not for you.

You will find fatty bits and bone in the meat. This is how you know its the real stuff. The spring rolls are very authentic too, and clearly made in house, with a unique flavor and texture.

And the pho is the best in alberta, hands down. My partner and I eat a LOT of pho, and none compares, even in the big cities.

If you love exploring food and culinary experiences, my partner and I both highly recommend!

What a hidden gem! We stopped by Rocky Sub & Cafe not expecting much, but were so pleasantly surprised. The chicken banh mi was absolutely delicious — fresh bread, flavorful chicken, and that perfect crunch from the pickled veggies. We also had the grilled lemongrass chicken with a spring roll, and it was packed with flavor.

Portions were generous, the service was super friendly and fast, and the whole experience just felt like a lucky find. Didn’t expect to get such great Vietnamese food in Rocky Mountain House — but here we are, already planning to go back!

I’m from Calgary so I just stop by Rocky Mountain House for a few hour. This is the best Lemongrass Chicken with vermicelli I ever have. The staff is friendly and everything is fresh with a lot of green inside. Definitely will be back

We were driving from Edmonton to BC, and we wanted to find a place to stop along the way to eat lunch. We were so excited to find and eat this delicious Vietnamese food on the way. It reminds me of some of the really good Vietnamese food that I’ve eaten in larger cities. The place feels family run: great quality and portions, delicious soups and stews, and excellent prices. Would go again and recommend to anyone who likes high quality Vietnamese food.

I had the tofu sub. I was good but smallish. I asked what the mystery sauce was, and they wouldn’t tell me. Guys… listen… you HAVE to tell the customer what they are eating in this country… it is the LAW. I left hungry, because who can fill up on a sandwich of a few tofu cubes and some shredded carrots. Not me.

So while I believe the food is decent… if customers are leaving hungry, your business will eventually fail.

If I can make a giant jar of pickled onions for a couple of bucks… what is the excuse for serving people in a business, a few onion strands?

Good luck guys… you are almost a place I would return to.

Stopped by for lunch at this new restaurant in town and was glad I came. I ordered a banh mi sandwich and a bowl of spicy bun bo hue noodles and was impressed by how fresh and authentic they were! Very delicious food and nicely renovated dinning area. Will be coming with friends back to try the rest of their menu.

They exeded our expectations. Prices are really affordable, and the sandwiches are super tasty. We also got ice coffee, and it was great. The server was also very friendly and polite. What he can not say with words he says with a big smile. We will definitely come back.

Great food! Salad rolls were fantastic, just wish they didn’t wrap them in plastic when dining in. Pho soup is excellent but still wish their portions were a bit bigger. Otherwise worth the visit.
