The Juicy Lucy didn’t disappoint – and the fries paired with it were perfection. Great lunch.
And then there was dinner. I went with a platter per recommendation – Two Giant Chunks of Chicken, Ribs, Steak Strips, Green Beans (good enough to drink the juice – excellent), Black Beans & Rice. Two full meals worth – I’m talking dinner and another dinner’s worth of leftovers.
This place deserves more stars than I can give it.
That says a lot, but what says even more is that I came back a few hours later because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Second round was ribs, fries, and fried plantains. Same story: cooked perfectly, amazing seasoning, and just flat-out delicious. The ribs were tender, fries crispy, and the plantains were incredible.
On top of the food, the owner was there and was genuinely nice and welcoming, which makes a big difference. You don’t find spots like this often, food this good, consistency across dishes, and great people running it.
This place is special. I’ll be back, and I’ll be bringing people with me.
My wife and I started with a slice of the lemon meringue pie (who doesn’t start with dessert). This was a clearly a local made pie, which is refreshing considering how many restaurants are using commercially made pies that taste more like a chemistry project than food. The pie had a nice balanced and rich flavor that was neither sickly sweet nor face puckering sour.
For the meal we tried the 1/2 chicken meal with plantains and black beans with rice, as well as the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad. As this was our first visit we also ordered an extra item to ensure we got a good sense of what their food was like, this was the pulled pork parfait.
The chicken meal was everything you would hope for in a signature dish, I asked and was told it is a peruvian-style rotisserie chicken and it far exceeded both my wife and my expectations…. Richly seasoned with crispy edges and crisp skin this chicken could hold its own on the menu in any fancy restaurant.
The side of plantains was beautifully caramelized with a nice chewy texture that I look forward to with plantain dishes.
The black beans and rice were good exactly what I would expect from that sort of side, the fresh made chimichurri sauce that I got with the chicken was even better with the rice and beans. In fact the chimichurri sauce needs its own comment as it is really quite exceptional as well.
My wife’s pulled pork sandwich was both Smokey and still moist which is difficult to do with pulled pork as you usually have one or the other.
Lastly, the pulled pork parfait was fun but probably not my preferred dish…. Each of the flavors was really good individually and definitely worked well together, however I tend to personally prefer dishes with at least some crispy or crunchy textured component. I am sure my daughter would love it with it’s Mac and cheese center though.
All together this was fantastic and we are definitely coming back and definitely bringing friends.
Girlfriend had the chicken breast platter w/ mac n cheese and mashed potatoes + cilantro ranch & chimichuri. Have mercy. I stole more than a few bites. Life-changing chicken. People of Evansville…you need to get out and try this place if you haven’t. You won’t be sorry.
