We’ve been visiting Rivermill for years—with a little break between 2022 and the recent reopening in Fall 2025. I’m so glad our little townie/college bar is back and better than ever.
Food: Terrific. Their small kitchen puts out great bar food with homemade effort; they care about the quality. My favorites are the carnitas when they’re available, the Chicken Riverphilly, or the BLT (which I had tonight). My husband is a big fan of the spicy beef tacos that come with great refried beans and the carnitas tacos topped with homemade pickled onions. You also can’t go wrong with the nachos.
Service: Step up to the bar to order and they’ll take good care of you. And these bartenders care about their craft. From the perfect Guinness pour to a wonderful Old Fashioned, they’ve got you covered. The tap list rotates for the most part, with great standards staying put and others swapping in and out.
Atmosphere: it’s the best. A fun vibe, TVs everywhere, Hokie supporting, pool tables, dart boards, and misc games. Or just chill at the bar and enjoy good conversation.
A Blacksburg institution and a gift to those of us who appreciate a good local.

I really like this restaurant. I got the Philly steak and cheese. The sandwich was delicious and the fries were amazing. The ambience is really fun and I would definitely go here again. The staff was very friendly and the prices are fair. It would be a fun place to watch a game and play pool.

Atmosphere was great, and the machos are not meant to be eaten alone. I’m so full after eating it myself. The chips are homemade, I’m pretty sure. Some of them were overcooked, but for the most part, they were really good. I don’t recommend getting it with taco meat. There were more beans than meat. That bummed me out a bit. I would go back to eat a burger and tots.
