Such a cute spot to get something sweet near the Riverwalk! The staff is very helpful & was quick to offer us samples since it was our first time in. I was very impressed with how clean it was inside as well. The outdoor seating area in the back is nicely decorated and a good spot if you don’t want to sit next to the busy road. The custard & Italian ice is delicious. We will definitely be back!

A refreshing spot near the river walk. What really makes this place stand out is the friendly and helpful staff. They are always happy to serve you no matter how busy it gets. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their tasty treats!

So we were out for a Sunday drive one beautiful day and had stopped by Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard. We had wanted to come here once before when we were out for dinner in McHenry once before, but when we left the restaurant it was raining. We thought, heck, a little rain ain’t gonna stop us. But as we started to wend our way through these dark, unlit side streets, the rain became torrential and we turned around to look for main road and lights.

So here we were on a beautiful Sunday and came across Rita’s and even though we just had a filling lunch, we stopped in. And crazily enough, we got a parking spot right out front. Though the road is very busy and I don’t suggest parking on it with kids in the car. Just drive around the corner and park. I had no idea about other parking because we were in an area that we were unfamiliar with.

My wife got the black raspberry flavor and I got chocolate banana mixed with campfire marshmallow. Wow!!! So freakin’ good, and creamy and delicious.

Can I explain how good it was? It was so good that I don’t need to compare it. It’s packed with flavor but not overly so. The chocolate banana was like eating a chocolate covered banana. The campfire marshmallow tasted like I was at that bonfire. I was in heaven. I’m still in heaven. Why? Because I’m typing this up months later and my mouth is watering as I reminisce about it. Now I want Rita’s and there isn’t a close location. Dammit. I’ll have to go tomorrow and get some. That’s how good it was!

The lemon Italian ice is possibly the most refreshing thing in the whole of McHenry. Really.

Nice selection of ices and ice cream.

Tables inside and outside.

Clean with cool decor.

Friendly staff.

I became aware of Rita’s when I was in N J. This place is really cool. If you’ve never had custard layered with icee, you’re really missing great. It’s served like ice cream in a tub. The flavors are amazing, and they use real fruit. Go to your nearest Rita’s and have something special.

I’m not really sure what the hype is with this place?? first time going there the other night and we got the one that was a mixture of the custard and the Italian ice and honestly it really wasn’t that good. The Italian ice itself was ok the Vanilla frozen custard was just decent I mean maybe it’s just an acquired taste but Culvers topped this place by 1000%. When I go back, I mean, maybe if I didn’t feel like driving five minutes down the road to Culver’s, but honestly, they didn’t have any fresh fruits to mix in, no banana it just wasn’t for us

Not your average Ice Cream shop. Rita’s is different than most ice cream shops you’ll find in the area. The quality of the Italian Ice is very high and it’s clearly homemade with great ingredients. The gelati is like nothing I’ve ever had before, which is to say it’s absolutely delicious. My 5 year old daughter loved the skittles ice and my wife ordered a cookie sandwich. Everything was terrific and there were no leftovers. This is a great addition to the community, and despite it being a 20 minute drive from our house, it’s well worth it. We highly recommend Rita’s!

This place is great. It’s all made with love and you can tell. I brought my son in after a hot day and they let us sample through things (all delicious) until we found something to settle on. They even put a cherry on top for him, which many places, for whatever reason, simply will not do. It really made his day, and mine!

Last year we stopped here a ton. Like any restaurant we mention my son’s nut allergy and last year any time we went in, the owners were so sweet and would offer to wash their hands or wipe down a soft serve machine etc. tonight we went in, and the staff seemed totally dumbfounded when I asked if they could wash their hands before making his. We are always aware of a cross contamination situation, especially at ice cream shops, but most around here have trained staff on what to do. The Freeze, Culver’s, Cary dairy, dq in Cary, all have a safety protocol. Rita’s doesn’t and staff didn’t know what to do.
But I did ask if they could just wash their hands and she did, so thank you for that.
We have enjoyed Rita’s many times but will need to put this on a no go spot for safety reasons. We are not the type to force a restaurant to cater to an allergy issue, but rather just put it on the danger zone list and avoid.
Our items were good. The custard never tastes cold. It’s very fluffy and good but oddly not cold. Hard to explain. The ice is great. Plenty cold too. Almost $8 for what’s essentially a blizzard is wild though. For the 4 of us we spent $30ish dollars.
Have a good summer season.
