Rising Sun Of Mokena

  4.3 – 719 reviews   • Chinese restaurant

Rising Sun Restaurant was established in 1981 and is a family oriented business. We have three locations in Mokena, New Lenox, and Frankfort. We specialize in both Cantonese and Mandarin cuisines. Cantonese style is probably the most familiar to Americans, originating from the southern region of China, and is best known for its quick, stir-fry cooking, a method of cooking where the meat is tender and the vegetables are crisp. Mandarin style originates from the northern region of China and is best known for its spicy flavor.

Chinese staples such as Kung Pao chicken & egg rolls in a casual setting with traditional decor.

Best Chinese food ever. Big plates for the price. It is kind of expensive, but worth it. It was packed with flavor. The drinks were tasty, and strong. Fair price on drinks. Customer service was amazing, the lady was super sweet and very kind. Thank you for the great dinner.

This was my first time ordering from them. I had ordered Mongolian beef at a similar restaurant before, but I liked it more at this restaurant. First, the portion was big and you can tell they don’t skimp on the meat. Second, the staff were polite. Thank you. If I’m nearby again, I’ll order again. The only thing is, you forgot to include forks and spoons. I had my own, but if I didn’t have spare utensils, that would have been disappointing. Overall, I liked everything, and the restaurant’s atmosphere was nice too.

This was our first time trying Rising Sun and I wasn’t impressed. But to be fair some of it was probably my fault. People kept telling me how great the egg rolls were so I was excited to try them. They also mentioned that the egg rolls did have peanut butter in them, and I’m not a peanut butter fan. But I grew up making egg rolls with my mom, and those egg rolls had some peanut butter in them as a lot of egg roll recipes do. And I loved them. The peanut butter was/is a subtle underlying additional flavor. The egg rolls here at Rising Sun are very peanut butter forward. It’s not an after thought. There’s nothing subtle about it. So if you aren’t a big peanut butter fan, you should probably stay away from those. We also tried other things on the menu and found that for us they were just ok. We normally go to Chen’s in Tinley, so for now we’ll stick with that.

Absolute gem. I have been eating here for decades now. I used to go with my grandmother before she passed and I’m going now with my wife and kids. Best egg rolls in the area by a wide margin and everything else is far better than average. Cost is a little high compared to other places but the quantity of food is reflective of that.

We paid 85 usd for 3 dishes. It’s a bit expensive for a simple Chinese dish. The sweet and sour chicken tastes good but the kung pao chicken tastes nasty , it tastes like poop or liver, it’s hard to explain the taste. I always eat kung pao chicken when I go to a Chinese restaurant and I could tell it tasted really funny. The noodles with mung leaves was a little bland, lacking flavor. The lady was also rude. When I asked if I could get the soup packed which I paid for , she said no straight away even tho I paid for it. It wasn’t a complimentary. She didn’t smile at all and her response was really off. I felt embarrassed for even asking for my order to be a little spicy because the way she responded to me. It wasn’t worth it. I also tried the egg roll that went with the meal I ordered , everybody said it was good but it was actually nasty.

This 5 star reviews isn’t only for the high quality food we received. It is also due to the incredibly thoughtful packaging for my to go order. 99.99999% of the time when you order a fried and sauced item ( sweet and sour pork, general tsos etc.) to go most likely by the time you get home, it’s no longer that crispy, fresh, sticky delicious item but a soggy mess. They have rectified that by packaging the sauce separately and leaving the container open with the fried chicken with holes in the bag to allow the heat to leave so the chicken doesn’t get soggy by steam. Absolutely brilliant!

After a craving for Asian cuisine, we stopped here. It was our first time visiting and it did not disappoint. For our order we had Mongolian beef and a combination plate which included an egg roll, shrimp in lobster sauce, fried rice, and egg drop soup. The egg rolls were large, and portion sizes were great, the perfect size. I highly recommend the shrimp in lobster sauce. It was so good! Prices were good too! We especially loved the hot tea readily available on our table. The waitress was very attentive. We will definitely eat here again.

I don’t know where to start. We have traveled to so many different places, regions, and even internationally to 27 countries and have frequently our share of Chinese eateries. This is by far the worst Chinese restaurant I’ve been so unlucky to visit and will never be back. The egg rolls seemed like they were made in a factory and fried. The stuffing were slimy and really gross. My kids and I took one bite and we had to spit it out on the napkin. My dish was mostly bean sprouts and really really bland. There was no taste to it. The fried rice seems like it was prepared in old grease. It has that old grease smell. The egg drop soup taste somewhat like it was made from Cheetos. Above all the female waitress was rather rude. We asked what was sin the dish, she said “you can see in the menu” but the lunch menu does not have any ingredients listed on them. Finally she pointed out to look at the main menu. Even then, after looking at the main menu, it does not match the lunch menu. I asked if the kids wanted to leave, but they were tired and hungry. They said let’s give it a shot. .and they were disappointed. One of my kiddos only took 5 bites of his dish and didn’t want to finish it. It’s so bad we didn’t even take the food with us in the take out box. Overall, it’s a big disappointment. I’m not sure how this establishment get 4.3 overall stars. There’s not an option for zero star. Don’t be mislead by other review. You will regret it.

“ The food came in jumbo sizes for a reasonable price. They also included a bunch of sauces for no charge on the side. The fried shrimp was amazing and you should definitely try it with the sweet & sour sauce. I definitely recommend this place for anyone having a taste for Chinese food!”

One of my favorite Chinese places. The eggrolls are the best here. They are crispy, savory, sweet and always super fresh and hot. The Mongolian beef never has any weird chewy pieces and the sauce is always really flavorful with a little kick.
