The eggplant was cooked perfectly – the crispy edges were an excellent contrast to the eggplant’s soft meat. The sauce that the dish came with was also excellent.
The beef stir fry with flat noodles was equally good. Well seasoned. Not too oily nor salty.
Service was next level. We ordered and both dishes were ready within a few minutes. The eggplant dish was so hot that we had to wait for it cool down a bit.
Overall this is one of the best restaurants we’ve been to on vancouver island and a true hidden gem of Nanaimo. Genuinely surprised that the reviews for this restaurant don’t reflect the quality of food that we got – maybe menu is too large for most?
Definitely coming back – can’t recommend it enough!
The staff were really helpful, and quick to answer.
Wait time: 5/5
We waited very little, maybe 15 minutes for our first dish to arrive.
Food: 4.5/5
There was so much flavour in both the Peking Duck and also the eggplant. Soooo tasty! My only complaint is that you can only buy a 2 course Peking Duck, you can’t order 1 course.
Overall: 4.8/5
Fantastic restaurant. Would definitely recommend, especially for larger groups.
Eggplant tofu: the eggplant was amazingly crispy, buttery and light, the egg tofu was soft and creamy. Served piping hot.
Shanxi cold noodles: delicious, well balanced dressing and tender noodles.
Shrimp har gau: their dim sum menu is very small, but these were steamed well and what I would expect from anywhere.
I can’t speak to the Canadian-chinese dishes like chow mein, Kung Pao chicken, ginger beef, chicken fried rice etc but these are items I would never recommend in general at any restaurant as they are a watered down version of Chinese food made for limited western palates.
The atmosphere is a second though to the food, and there is a constant stream of people walking through the restaurant picking up orders, but the service is fast and friendly.
The Good: House special eggplant and beef w/ broccoli were delicious! Closest thing to a Lower Mainland chinese meal we’ve had thus far. The menu had all our favorites.
The Not-So-Good: DanDan noodles were bland, the Vinegar Honey Pork we ordered was super tasty, but slightly overcooked, and we had to wait an extra 10 mins on top of the expected take-out ETA (which i suppose wasn’t too bad).
However, I still give it a 4-star rating given that the food was overall quite delicious and (as mentioned earlier) easily the closest thing Nanaimo has to the Lower Mainland’s chinese restaurants.
Often overlooked in Value village but is a good lunchin spot in my opinion.
The Braised pork with Garlic sauce was great ! Loved it with plain rice !
Dan dan noodles was new for me !! Mapu Tofu was so soft ! Would love to explore more option on the menu but it’s a 5 for me on the first visit !
The sweet and sour pork was just simply okay, not good, or bad just meh. The beef chop seuy was absolutely basic nothing special.
The spring were bland with a thick doughy wrapper.
No clue why this place has so much hype and following it’s nothing special the owners should up their game.
Was very put off by the ugly AI photos on the website, just include real photos of your dishes. But very happy I didn’t let that change my decision in the end.
Despite that, still 5 stars because of the beautiful complex flavours of the egg plant and honey garlic pork.
