The teamwork on display tonight was worth taking note. Staff jumping in to course correct before there was ever an issue. The way staff jumped in to ensure dinner service was seamless from start to finish was great. All hands were on deck the kitchen ran food to keep it hot at certain times, multiple staff contacts to make sure we were okay through our dining experience and not waiting long for needs to get met. Where there could have been pitfalls, there was effort to jump in and make sure our meal ran seamlessly. Had I not been in the industry I would have ever noticed the possible issues that could have happened with my meal. Everyone who runs a restaurant should come and experience the wonderful dinner service here and take it back to your restaurant. I have no complaints! Not a single complaint! I wish more restaurants ran this way. Good food, great staff, great ambiance and music. I can’t wait to come back for the fish and waffles.
A good place to go for southern food and drinks.
I think we’d come here more if the dining area didn’t have the same vibe as the bar area. They play sort of mainstream music so it doesn’t feel like a relaxing dining experience as much as it could.
The overall aesthetic of the place is really nice – I think if they matched the music better (ie., bar music different than dining music), the ambience could be very nice. I’d recommend instrumental music or jazz for the dining area, but recognize that may not be everyone’s taste.
Also, every time we come here their signature crawfish pie dish is not in stock. If it’s very popular and people go here for it, make sure that one is available as often as possible.
Out of the fried chicken. One of our pork chop slices had a strange smell/taste. The wings, cornbread, ribs, and mac and cheese were all great.
Strange comment from bartender about ordering the espresso martini flight – felt like I may have inconvenienced with that request. But the flight was great.
We also were given 2 different menus with different meals and drinks on them. I noticed a large coffee bar but no coffee on the menu.
They were out of several food options so we decided on the catfish with a side of mac and cheese and greens and also the roasted chicken.
The catfish was breaded with breadcrumbs, which is not a way anybody in the south prepares catfish. The mac and cheese was disgusting. The roasted chicken was pretty bad as well.
I will say that the cornbread was exceptionally good. The wings were as well. The greens were not terrible.
The interior is gorgeous, the seats are comfortable.
The music choice is amazing!!! Adds to an amazing vibe here.
We had made a reservation in advance for the weekend, and while we had to wait a few minutes to be seated, the front-of-house staff and our server were warm, friendly, and attentive throughout.
To start, we ordered the cornbread and some drinks. The cornbread was soft, flavorful, and a perfect beginning to the meal. The drinks were spot on as well.
For mains, the standout was the shrimp with Marsh Hen Mills grits—scrumptious, full of flavor, and easily our favorite. We also tried the breakfast burger and the cheesy egg hash skillet, both of which were tasty and satisfying.
We’re already looking forward to coming back—especially for dinner and drinks. The ambiance must be even more beautiful at night!

The food here is absolutely outstanding. Every dish that hit our table was plated beautifully and had bold flavors that made it hard not to pause after each bite. The crab beignets were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, packed with flavor. Their shrimp and grits were next-level, creamy and rich without being heavy, with shrimp cooked to perfection. And do not skip the cornbread — it comes out warm, fluffy, and slightly sweet, with butter that melts right in.
The drinks are just as impressive. Their cocktail menu is creative, and you can tell the bartenders take pride in what they serve. My drink was balanced and refreshing, not overly sweet, and paired perfectly with the meal.
What really takes Rex over the top, though, is the vibe and the service. The staff makes you feel welcome without hovering, and the energy in the space is lively without being too loud. It’s the kind of spot that works just as well for a date night, a dinner with friends, or even an upscale solo meal at the bar.
If you’re in Philly and you haven’t been, you’re missing out. Rex at The Royal is the perfect blend of Southern-inspired comfort and modern dining. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. This is officially one of my go-to recommendations for anyone visiting the city.
