This was exactly what we were looking for. We had just spent the day at Great Wolf Lodge, exhausted and looking for something quiet and warm. Searching around google for family owned Mexican food I stumbled across this gem, and a review that caught my eye about worn tables and chairs, and family of the owners eating there. My kind of place. Let’s face it, if it doesn’t have a bit of wear, and their family doesn’t eat there, it wouldn’t be good. We walked in to a smiling and welcoming face, led to our table and was quickly brought chips and was directed to their salsa bar. Now this isn’t just some cheap, out of the bottle, salsa bar. These were all homemade. The two that I tried were nice and hot. The chips are not the typical out of the bag and fried variety, these seemed homemade, and authentic, very crispy. We ordered a weekend special, nice price for 3 tacos, rice and beans. I had cabeza and my girlfriend had beef. The meat was perfectly seasoned and nice and tender. He took our request to leave the onions off the tacos. The beans were not refried beans, they were whole pinto beans and had obviously been simmered with spices and onions for a long time. Delicious. It was clear to us that a family owned this wonderful place, and put their heart into it. I am disappointed to not be a local, or I would be a regular for sure.
10/10. Would recommend.
I am not one to typically leave reviews, but felt inclined to leave a more recent review by someone who actually ate the food there.
Cheers!

Most people speed right through this part of town and completely miss this hidden gem, tucked away where an old espresso shop used to be.

The cabeza sope was satisfying. Crispy bottom combined with tender meat. The flautas were also good, crispy and packed with flavor. Fast, friendly service and a salsa bar. I think I’ll be back.

We enjoyed our meal. I loved their homemade salsa bar and chips. Wish they gave us a bigger portion of rice. Tacos were delicious my husband said.

We walked in ,were greeted rather mechanically and then we sat down at tables that were very well worn and chairs that were the same. I checked out the salsa bar, which us why we decided to try this place, and it was extremely messy and looked uncared for and honestly, it scared me for food safety reasons. That was strike one. The menu choices are quite simplistist so we were trying to find something that would fit for us and everything just sounded about the same. Strike two. A guy brought chips over a half full basket of overcooked tortilla chips and told us we could choose our salsa at the salsa bar. It’s sad that they feel the need to have a sign that warns diners that if they waste a drop of salsa they will be charged a $5.00 fee. Moving on… They have all bottled beverages so no iced tea. Strike 3 was when we noticed the children sitting at a corner table were eating food that wasn’t from the menu. It seemed as if they were family members so it seemed odd they wouldn’t be eating the food at the restaurant. It was very off putting. The decor was almost non-existent and it just felt like it was not somewhere we were comfortable eating. So, we kindly let the guy know that we were leaving because it’s just not what we were looking for. He shrugged and said okay. Don’t recommend this place at all.
As a reply to the person who responded to my review:
I did not lie in my review. I did respond to your sister, however, I don’t speak loudly so perhaps she didn’t hear me, but to call me a liar is just wrong. Yes, your sign doesn’t say “one drop of salsa” and that comment was not meant meant to be literal, it is how the sign made me feel. Yes, the salsa bar was messy. I never said in my review that the chips were not enough for two people, I said the basket was half empty, which is true – again not a lie. Your choices are simplistic. I didn’t say you had no variety, I said simplistic. Everything comes with rice and beans and no options for veggies or salad instead like at many Mexican restaurants. Also, there was one choice or bean – refried – no option for black beans, so yes, simplistic even though you do have several choices. As for the kids eating, I have no issue that they were in the dining room eating, what I said was that it seemed odd that they looked to be eating food not from your establishment. You say they were eating a quesadilla, but it looked like they were eating something with a thick piece of meat in the middle inside a bun, which looked like a hamburger…not a quesadilla, but as I didn’t go over and look and didn’t ask them I can’t know for sure, but if it was a quesadilla it was the most stuffed one I have ever seen. Also, in your reply you stated that we arrived about 7pm. We actually were in your restaurant from 6:10pm – 6:24pm so perhaps your dinner rush is a very early one? Don’t call me a liar and don’t say that I am trying to ruin a small business, quite the contrary. At other Mexican restaurants we have gone to we have been able to substitute the rice and beans as I mentioned above, as my husband cannot have all those carbs, so I want other people to know what you serve so they don’t waste their time coming in if it is not what they are looking for. As to what you said you when we left, I will go with what you said as I was already mostly out the door as my husband, being a gentleman, always opens the door for me, so I do apologize for not hearing all that you said. And lastly, your comment as to what kind of a person I am was completely out of line. Moving forward, I wish you nothing but the best and much success in your restaurant now and in the future.
