My husband & I had take the 1.5 hour drive to Portland for an appoinment.
We came across this wonderful place while searching for a delicious lunch.
Wonderful, superb authentic food!
we tried the house made jalepeno poppers (ginormous & fresh) to start. Husband had the pork chimichanga (pork cooked to perfection) & I had to try the fried green tomato tacos. Blown away by all the flavors!
Abby was our awesome server who served up a wonderfully funny sense of humor!
Be careful though, she BITES!!!
I visited during the off-peak time of around 1:30 pm and was promptly greeted by an energetic hostess. She invited me to sit anywhere I wanted and even mentioned that I may want to select a bigger table since it was not a busy time! Nice, huh? She answered several questions about the menu and never winced. She was gracious throughout and aimed to please, exactly what you’d want in a hostess but seldom get.
The meal was a customized quesadilla which was delicious. They even stocked a non-alcoholic beer! Heineken, no less.
The pricing was reasonable, also…not cheap but what you’d expect to pay in the City or perhaps just a little less.
Thanks to El Corazon, I had a super lunch experience. Thank you!
Chips and salsa are no longer complimentary, and what more, they’re $6.25. Gotta add that extra quarter just so the customers know you’re serious.
They also wouldn’t honor an online coupon I had because it wasn’t on paper… even though the code was a scannable QR code that had been emailed to me. Checkmate, I guess, to those without a printer.
Parking can be tough in this area, particularly on weekends, but otherwise it’s in a good spot. The location has some cool outdoor seating, and the inside is a little bit dated, but is full of light, conversation, and whatever is playing above the bar.
Pro-trip: COME HUNGRY!
As soon as you walk inside El Corazon, you can tell it’s an authentic Mexican spot, which is so refreshing to find here in Maine. The menu is not your typical Mexican-American menu — they really go all out by not only having your Mexican staples (tacos, burritos, etc) but also some very unique dishes that I wasn’t expecting to find in Portland. I was also impressed with their cocktail menu. It was very nice to see most cocktails priced between $8-$11; you don’t often see any anymore in a city’s downtown area. 5 stars for keeping it affordable, El Corazon!
After stuffing our faces with the free chips & salsa, we were ready to order. I went for the Birria de Chivito and it was delicious. This dish from Jalisco, Mexico consisted of young tender goat slow cooked for 7 hours (!!!) in a mild red Chile sauce with Mexican spices. Everything about this dish was perfect. It was so full of flavor and aromas that transcended what my palate was expecting. It came with a side of rice, beans, and tortillas aka way too much food, so I had leftovers which made for a nice dinner the next day. I also tried the pork pozole, which was a steal for under $6. So filling! The tortillas were phenomenal and they give you so many of them. The queso fundido was also a hit — it was one of the best ones I’ve ever had.
My partner had the Sundevil Carne Asada plate and he said he liked it, but I found the meat to be a bit bland and chewy. I am glad I ordered the goat and not the steak, honestly.
All in all, great food in a very casual setting which we actually enjoyed. Service was definitely all over the place, but you can tell they are severely understaffed at the moment, so kindness is key. Our waiter was also the bartender for the night, and in total there were only two people serving the whole restaurant.
PS the churros are AMAZING. Make sure to go for a birthday!!
