First, the miso soup served before the meal had a strange taste, almost like dishwater. The dishes arrived fairly quickly. My husband ordered ramen, while I went for the regular Combo F, which includes my favorite tempura shrimp and ribs, along with a sashimi platter.
The sashimi was extremely unfresh and had a very unpleasant texture. The flavor of the rib sauce was good, but the meat was so tough that I had to eat an entire piece in one go because I couldn’t chew it properly. The ramen was mediocre at best. Overall, I would rate the food a 6/10.
Things got worse in the afternoon. Around 4 PM, I began experiencing sharp stomach pains and a strong urge to vomit. I had to stop working and rest for two hours, but by 6:30 PM, I still felt awful and ended up vomiting twice in the bathroom. Only after throwing up did I feel some relief. My husband also experienced diarrhea around 9 PM. Aboulutely not recommend!!!
Ami has the best sushi in town. There’s a lot of variety and it’s made well. I try to get different things every time I go, my favorite ones are Crazy Horse, Salmon Avalanche, and Lion King. Great Miso Soup and salad. Ramen is a little neutral so it’s great for someone who doesn’t like spicy. Even if you don’t enjoy sushi, there have other options.
It’s a popular dinner spot but they have seating in the basement for larger groups. Our server Cameron was awesome and food came out very quick.
Our meal at Ami started out with a salad and miso soup. Both were delicious! We were seated quickly and didn’t have to wait long to order or receive what we had ordered. The staff was kind and professional.
We ordered the Sushi lovers, super OMG sushi, hot sake, and we each ordered bibimbap.
The sushi here was great, I loved the presentation of the Super OMG sushi especially. The hot sake was necessary after a cold day.
I enjoyed most of the bibimbap I ordered, however the spicy squid was a bit tough. My partner ordered the spicy pork bibimbap though and had no complaints! 🙂
Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be back.
Edit 5/9/24: we’ve been back several times since i originally wrote this review and Ami has become one of my favorite restaurants in Bloomington. I had the Nabeyaki Udon yesterday and it was so good. Love this place and it’s a great place for a date night.
Everything was exquisite, the flavors were amazing, and the service/atmosphere only heighten the experience of dining here.
Although our bill ended up nearing $100, it was well worth it for the quality of food!
I ordered the dolsot bibimbap with tofu. Like most meals, it included miso soup and salad appetizers. Oddly enough the kelp in the miso soup stood out to me as being really good – it actually had some texture to it which is unfortunately not always the norm even at otherwise decent Japanese restaurants. The salad was fresh and the ginger dressing was strong and very tasty.
The bibimbap was really good! It was my first time getting bibimbap in the stone pot and I was impressed when it came out sizzling and then kept sizzling. The cooked vegetables were cooked just right so that they still had a bit of crunch. The only things off for me were a matter of personal preference – the egg was fully cooked while I prefer a runny yolk, and there was some oil pooled on top, but the oil ended up being not very noticeable. It was nice that the sauce was served on the side so I could dress it to my liking. I had the “original spicy” sauce which definitely has a kick, but the sweetness cuts it a bit and it wasn’t so hot that I had to be sparing with it, but they also have a milder sauce for those that prefer less heat.
I was there with one other person, and we got a table right away, but they were pretty much at capacity while we were there. Our food came out pretty quickly, though, especially since they brought out the soup and salad first.
The prices were a big highlight – my bowl was only $14 and it was so big that I couldn’t finish, not to mention the complimentary soup and salad. Everything on the menu seemed like a good deal. My friend got a combo where he ordered ramen (which also comes with miso soup and salad) and added a roll of sushi for $3 – a ton of food for a relatively affordable price. But despite the low prices it didn’t taste cheap – it was simple stuff, but legit good food. I’d for sure come here again if I lived in Bloomington.
