This review is purely based on Red’s Eat’s service and atmosphere. I don’t think there are enough reviews on here that highlight the extremely long lines. And I have been in some long food lines before, but what sets this one apart is that the line moves at a snails pace.
We were driving from Acadia National Park to Boston airport and planned to stop at Red’s Eats enroute for lunch. We got there 15 minutes before they opened, on a Sunday nonetheless, and there was already a fair sized line. However, I thought once they open that the wait time would be 15-30 minutes. Nope! We waited an hour and still had not made our way to the front to order.
Also, Red’s Eats likes to waste time patting themselves on the back. In line there is a list of celebrities that have eaten there. And right when they opened, they came on the loud speaker to announce they won another award for best lobster roll in Maine. Novel idea, maybe they should make more of an effort to efficiently service their customers than boasting they are the best.
We had a plane to catch. Luckily there is another lobster roll shack literally across the street from Red’s Eats. We were able to order and get our food from them in about 15 minutes. Plus that place had a more nautically themed atmosphere.
So unless you have time to be waiting in line, then go somewhere else for your lobster roll fix. If you still want to eat here, know that is cash or check only.

Been wanting to go here for a long time, but we were always on another destination run when going by. This time, we had specific plans to go. I have NEVER seen so much lobster meat in a roll before! You literally have to eat a lot of it off the roll with a fork first just to get to the roll. And they give you a little cup of warm butter to do that. Bought onion rings to go with it that were very good. And the blueberry soda was quite tasty. There is seating there, and also across the street, which is right on the ocean. It was beautiful and refreshing. It’s very busy, so be prepared to wait in line, unless you strike it just right. I suggest at least an hour before opening. Lot of traffic due to being right on Rt.1, but plenty of parking nearby on Water St. The service was amazing. They kept bringing out water in a pitcher to give to those of us in line who get thirsty, and even umbrellas to those that wanted a shield from the warm sun. Who does that?!! Enjoyed very much!

We went to see what all the fuss was about. We waited 2 1/2 hours in line to place an order at a window. I’m not quite sure why it takes so long, but the line moves incredibly slow, and there were plenty of empty tables, it was the pace of getting the product out that was slow. Maybe its in the process or staffing, I’m not sure. During our stay in Maine we tried out a new place every day to compare. This one IS $36 and yes it did have more lobster than any other we tried, but was proportional to the increase in price compared to the other rolls at other places with slightly less lobster for cheaper price. Quality was the same as other places. It was delicious without doubt, but I wouldnt wait in line ever again for that long for a lobster roll. Time is precious when on vacation. We also had the blueberry cake- that was delicious, highly recommend that.

After seeing this place on a food network show, we decided to stop at it on our way for a vacation at Bar Harbor. I read lots of reviews and many people said it wasn’t worth the wait or it wasn’t better than what you can get at lots of other locations. We decided to give it a try anyway.
I have to say we weren’t disappointed. The lobster rolls were amazing. They had so much lobster in them and were really tender and sweet. Food wise we were really happy.
The downside was that we waited in line for two hours. Our timing wasn’t great as a tour bus had just gotten there and unloaded right before us. Had we known the line would move so slowly, we probably wouldn’t have waited since the temperature outside was in the mid 40s; which we also didn’t dress for.
There is some outdoor seating but after a two hour wait in what felt like freezing temps, we decided to eat in our car.
All in all, we would go back if we head that direction again, because it was that good.

Hold on to your boots because when you order a lobster roll…. You get a lobster + roll. So tender, so delicious and fair priced. I met people from all over while I waited in line. Speaking of the line, it was long but seemed to move at a decent rate. After I dug into the roll, I forgot all about the line. Can’t wait to go again.

I waited an agonizing 75 minutes for the “world-famous” Red’s Eats, and I can confirm: the line is a monumental waste of time. The entire experience was a profound disappointment.
This establishment has been in business for decades; they should have figured out by now how to move their “assembly line” faster and more efficiently so customers don’t have to suffer waiting in line for so long.
The iconic lobster roll, which is supposed to be the main event, was smelled fishy, completely cold and bland. It definitely was not worth the wait or the price. To make matters worse, we also ordered the fish and chips, and the fish itself was not good either.
Another headache was that payment is CASH ONLY. Seriously. In this day and age, for a transaction that typically costs between $50 and over $100, forcing customers to pay with only cash is ridiculous and inconvenient though there is an ATM machine placed in the front of the store.
The only redeeming quality in the entire meal was, unbelievably, the perfectly cooked side of fries.
If you’re in Wiscasset, Sprague’s Lobster is right across the street and is generally a better experience with no wait. Save your time and your money—the hype for Red’s Eats is simply unbelievable.

We stopped in around 1pm, about a week before the last day of the season. We were served at our table around 230pm.
They were out of several things, but still had a lot of options. As we were planning to get clams, which were sold out, we opted for a side of sea scallops & I may never order clams again. They are THAT good.
Staff were as friendly as ever & I love that they incorporate things from other local business – like the rolls/bread, butter & whoopie pies.
There are benches built in around the deck. As the line gets long, it’s no doubt helpful. Waits vary but can reach the 3hr mark. I feel like that is partly staff controlling the flow, as seating is available only after ordering. Once you order, off to the deck & they bring your food out. Delivery was pretty quick & there was ample butter, as well as a bag for leftovers, & hand wipes.
Everything was delish and, given current market prices, not crazy expensive. Especially since we bought 10 lobsters at the lobster pound for just shy of $200 2 days later & I’d say it took roughly 2 to get the same amount of meat.
While the world knows that Red’s is recognized with many awards as the best lobster roll… we now know that they also have the best seafood scallops! Dip them in butter and thank me later!
The big question is, of course, is it worth the wait when there are lobster shacks all around, including across the street. The truthful answer is maybe… the roll is iconic, thou you could buy 2 elsewhere & double up your meat, the scallops are unique and crave worthy, the service friendly & cheerful. I’d say, if you have the time, try it for yourself and you decide!

Amazing (repeat) experience at Red Eats this past Columbus Day! Debbie and Shelly were hospitable and made you feel right at home.
Totally worth driving out of your way for if you are in the New England area. Hands down the best (and most meat) lobster roll and lobster kabob! Also would recommend their other seafood as well. Scallops pictured below; light batter with perfect seasoning. Sadly no clams or crab at this time around due to seasonal timing, but I’ve had them in the past and totally worth tacking on to their traditional lobster roll. Will be stopping by again in the future!

Such a delicious lobster roll with an unbelievable amount of meat. The fried zucchini is wonderful in a slightly sweet batter. Yummy local desserts to try. But be prepared to wait! It was over 3 hours until we got to order

Cash only establishment with limited seating.
My family of 4 could not agree on a rating. After waiting in line for 75 minutes, we ordered a lobster roll, crab roll, lob kabob, a grilled cheese, and a puff dog. Of course we ordered a moxie soda to enhance the experience. $136 spent on family of 4.

We apparently hadn’t done enough research to know that the lobster rolls in Maine are served cold, not warm. It was good, but it wasn’t great and in our opinion, would have been better with warm lobster. The provided butter did warm it up and made the experience better.
Crab Roll -1/5
This was crabmeat roll was so bad that I actually went back to the front to ask for something else. I didn’t ask for a refund (even though it was a nearly $30 sandwich) but we couldn’t just choke this and eat it. There was no flavor, no seasoning, and had the consistency of oily mayonnaise. Incredibly disappointing considering the substantial wait. They did apologize, let us know that nobody else had a single complaint, and gave us a second puff dog instead.
Lob Kabob 4.5/5
I wish this thing was bigger, and would have been served with lemon. Missing a tiny bit of acidity and was easy to tear through. I ate it so fast, I didn’t even take a picture.
Grilled Cheese 5/5
IDK if anyone can mess up a grilled cheese- right? This one was good. Not too buttery or not buttery enough, decently spread cheese, good. We actually got it so I could put the lobster that fell off the roll into it and it worked perfectly.
Puff dog 5/5
My kid inhaled this puff dog and declared that it was the best dog he’s ever eaten. He ended up eating three. Perfectly cooked through, nicely coated, great temperature, no excess oil. No notes.
