Redcoat Tavern

Social Profile:

In 1972 Redcoat Tavern was conceived as something that at the time was entirely novel: a casual tavern (or pub) that took a serious, detailed approach to the quality of its food and beverage offerings with a menu that reflected the distinct personality and soul of the restaurant. An establishment liberated from both culinary structures and fads, where simpler foods would be celebrated, where comfort and informality would not have to mean mediocrity. Some decades later this concept caught on, starting in and around London, eventually coming to be called a ‘gastro-pub’. And gastropub, or perhaps ‘gastro-tavern’, is indeed a fitting moniker to describe what we have been doin for 50 years.

Veteran British-American pub & burger joint since 1972 with lots of beers & a retro, red-booth vibe.

You won’t see Drew Carey here because the price definitely isn’t right, but it’s close to being worth it! This is why…

-Atmosphere-

The atmosphere was lively. It’s giving an upscale pub style with high back leather booths, everything looked clean and the seating was comfortable.

-Service-

The service was pretty bad. From the time you walk in the door you can tell that the staff is almost annoyed just to seat you. No warm greetings or smiles here! Now the waiter himself was a good guy, probably given more tables than he should have which caused long delays between sightings, but he had a great attitude and was very helpful and as attentive as much as he could be.

-Food-
The food was good and came out hot, fresh, and best of all accurately. The portions to price ratio is way off (6 wings for $16!), Flavor was minimal (ig because it’s a British pub?) and they were out of lot of beers to be an Ale House.

All in all in our search for the best bar burger in Metro Detroit brought us here and we weren’t disappointed at all, but we also weren’t overwhelmed.

Because of the price, amount of food, and the rudest hostess in Michigan , this one gets a 3.8/5 flame rating for pubs.

And even though I’ll be taking my money to other places who appreciate my patronage in the future, I definitely recommend for those who want a nice pint and some bar food.

Don’t leave your wallet at home!

First time here, sat right away just shortly after 5 pm Friday. Very attentive, professional, and speedy service. Can not speak higher of my server. Very good onion soup, caesar salad, and medium rare prime rib. Really healthy portions of all. Brought home leftovers and took a delicious looking chocolate pot de crème to go. Personal gripe: will order Yorkshire on the side next time as it got a little soggy sitting in jus. Only suggestion for the restaurant is to please, for all that’s holy, sharpen your steak knives! Everyone knows prime rib has some fat and gristle to it, that’s never the issue, but having to saw away at the gristle with a less-than-sharp knife is frustrating. The meat itself was tender and lovely but a sharper knife would help your customers get to it faster! Can’t wait to come back.

Very sweet, hard working, and attentive servers/staff! Joe was my server for the night and he was so sweet! He helped with recommendations, answered any questions I had as well. He was very attentive. Made sure to check in on me, and fill drinks often 🙂 The food came out so quick I was surprised! It was all nice and hot with great flavor. As a more traditional american food eater, they didn’t have much of that (not that they advertise that they do, but just incase that’s something you’re looking for)! Serving sizes are definitely generous!!! It’s really cool that you can add in practically anything into the mac n cheese because they make it fresh!! I added jalapeños, and it was such a flavorful dish overall! The truffle fries are okay, they have a big amount of flavor so would be best to share (after a couple it’s overpowering). One big thing to mention is the big step at the entrance, and not really being able to tell where the entrance even is. I tripped over the step immediately lol. Ambiance was pretty nice inside! Overall would recommend! Price is somewhat high, but you definitely get what you pay for!

The food is ok. The batter on the fried pickles and onion rings is way too thick. The fried pickles are mushy, not crispy. Prices and portion sizes don’t match up.

Every time I come here, I leave very full and happy. The Brasserie Burger is a favorite, as well as their pot de crème, but my absolute must-have every time is the clam chowder. I always get a pint to take home with me for later. The restaurant itself accurately portrays a tavern atmosphere. If you’re in Royal Oak, definitely give it a try.

It’s probably been at least 20 years since we stopped at the Redcoat Tavern for their delicious clam chowder. On the way north on Woodward Avenue, we decided to stop and get a bowl of clam chowder.

However, when we walked inside it was busy and noisy and red, so we decided on a take out order instead.

I am sure, because it is called the Redcoat Tavern, the inside has basically all red bulbs or lamps, so the entire interior of the tavern has a red glow to it.

The take out area we were told was around the corner. When we got there, we found out it was also where the servers pick up their orders. That was the same 20 years ago. However, one of the servers(Natasha) was very pleasant and said can I help you and we said, clam chowder to go. She then stated a pint or a quart, we said a quart. We waited a short time and got our quart of clam chowder and oyster crackers (unfortunately the small bags we got were pretty stale. We also ordered a basket of bread which was very good. All in all the bill was just under $25.00. it would be nice if there was a specific area for take outs rather than in the flow of server traffic.

I know many restaurants are cutting back on serving size or minimizing the ingredients. The same goes for the clam chowder, which you could call potato chowder with a few clams. We remember back when there were clams with every spoonful of the chowder, no more. Even though it was very tasty a few more pieces of clam would be nice.

Even with the stale crackers the clam chowder was still very good as it was 20 years ago less a few pieces of clams.

Even with the not so good crackers and less clams, we still gave a 4-star because of the clam chowder.

I would recommend giving this place a try. Especially the clam chowder .

I ordered a Cuban sandwich and it came so soggy it was not edible and aside from that it didn’t have a good taste anyway. The meat tasted off and looks past its date as do the pickles. The general manager was more interested in making excuses saying that he checked it all himself and knows for a fact it was not wrong. So he’s calling us liars. My coworker ordered her burger medium well and it was bloody! This guy thinks we are idiots and it was very obvious by the way he talked to all three of us. Don’t go here unless you like rotten soggy food & a manager that thinks his customers are dumb.

It has been years since I’ve been here. I wish I would have just kept the memory and not gone back. The burger was average at best and for how much it cost I expected the best burger I have ever had. The onion rings were pretty great though.

I love red coat!! They have the best burgers and the BEST drinks!! Their cosmopolitan is so good and so consistent which is really hard to find!! Whoever their bartenders are, are the best! Great quality and incredibly consistent. I go here frequently and even ordered a bunch of food and a cosmo as my first meal after birth!! It was all delicious.

Amazing drink list. They have great classic cocktails and lengthy and unique wine and beer lists. Bravo!

Gotta get the burger. You can zhuzh it up But if you can’t, you can get the fish and chips. They do a great shepherd’s pie too!

Atmosphere is great for families or if you want to get some good food with friends.
