In 1972 Redcoat Tavern was conceived as something that at the time was entirely novel: a casual tavern (or pub) that took a serious, detailed approach to the quality of its food and beverage offerings with a menu that reflected the distinct personality and soul of the restaurant. An establishment liberated from both culinary structures and fads, where simpler foods would be celebrated, where comfort and informality would not have to mean mediocrity. Some decades later this concept caught on, starting in and around London, eventually coming to be called a ‘gastro-pub’. And gastropub, or perhaps ‘gastro-tavern’, is indeed a fitting moniker to describe what we have been doin for 50 years.
Veteran British-American pub & burger joint since 1972 with lots of beers & a retro, red-booth vibe.

-Atmosphere-
The atmosphere was lively. It’s giving an upscale pub style with high back leather booths, everything looked clean and the seating was comfortable.
-Service-
The service was pretty bad. From the time you walk in the door you can tell that the staff is almost annoyed just to seat you. No warm greetings or smiles here! Now the waiter himself was a good guy, probably given more tables than he should have which caused long delays between sightings, but he had a great attitude and was very helpful and as attentive as much as he could be.
-Food-
The food was good and came out hot, fresh, and best of all accurately. The portions to price ratio is way off (6 wings for $16!), Flavor was minimal (ig because it’s a British pub?) and they were out of lot of beers to be an Ale House.
All in all in our search for the best bar burger in Metro Detroit brought us here and we weren’t disappointed at all, but we also weren’t overwhelmed.
Because of the price, amount of food, and the rudest hostess in Michigan , this one gets a 3.8/5 flame rating for pubs.
And even though I’ll be taking my money to other places who appreciate my patronage in the future, I definitely recommend for those who want a nice pint and some bar food.
Don’t leave your wallet at home!
However, when we walked inside it was busy and noisy and red, so we decided on a take out order instead.
I am sure, because it is called the Redcoat Tavern, the inside has basically all red bulbs or lamps, so the entire interior of the tavern has a red glow to it.
The take out area we were told was around the corner. When we got there, we found out it was also where the servers pick up their orders. That was the same 20 years ago. However, one of the servers(Natasha) was very pleasant and said can I help you and we said, clam chowder to go. She then stated a pint or a quart, we said a quart. We waited a short time and got our quart of clam chowder and oyster crackers (unfortunately the small bags we got were pretty stale. We also ordered a basket of bread which was very good. All in all the bill was just under $25.00. it would be nice if there was a specific area for take outs rather than in the flow of server traffic.
I know many restaurants are cutting back on serving size or minimizing the ingredients. The same goes for the clam chowder, which you could call potato chowder with a few clams. We remember back when there were clams with every spoonful of the chowder, no more. Even though it was very tasty a few more pieces of clam would be nice.
Even with the stale crackers the clam chowder was still very good as it was 20 years ago less a few pieces of clams.
Even with the not so good crackers and less clams, we still gave a 4-star because of the clam chowder.
I would recommend giving this place a try. Especially the clam chowder .
Amazing drink list. They have great classic cocktails and lengthy and unique wine and beer lists. Bravo!
Gotta get the burger. You can zhuzh it up But if you can’t, you can get the fish and chips. They do a great shepherd’s pie too!
Atmosphere is great for families or if you want to get some good food with friends.
