Update 4 months later: since dining in several months ago I now order the beef siga through DoorDash when I crave Ethiopian. I’m still VERY HAPPY with the food! Eat in or have it delivered; it’s delicious!

The Red Sea Cafe is an excellent Ethiopian restaurant in a fantastic ice cream shop, the South Street Creamery! The three of us started with the tomato dip with injera chips and shared the injera plate with eggplant, beef siga, and chicken (this comes with greens and cabbage). If you haven’t had Ethiopian, injera is a soft bread served with stewed foods on top. You eat the different stews using the injera as a base to grab the stew with you hands. We always seem to want a second serving of injera when we eat Ethiopian so we eat every part of the meal to the last drop when the food is good.

RED SEA WAS DELICIOUS! All three of us have lived in the DC area, which has a large Ethiopian community and several Ethiopian restaurants; we’ve been to many Ethiopian restaurants and Red Sea is very, very good! Two differences: not oily and not too salty! The food is very healthy and reasonably priced!

I went to Red Sea Café today to try something new. The food was delicious. The owner cooked and brought us the food herself and was happy to share about the traditional Eritrea/Ethiopian cuisine.
The chicken and beef dish we shared was served with injera which is a nice fermented (gluten free) bread.
Everything was delicious and we would definitely go again to try other dishes. The flavor was something I have not had before!

I was looking for Ethiopian food and was surprised to find this hidden gem alongside an ice cream shop. The food was amazing!!! Every separate serving on the injera bread was excellent. Everything was seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of spice. The owner who made the food greeted us kindly and was so gracious. One of the best meals I’ve had in all of Jersey.

Delicious food! So comforting and tasty! Had the chicken and love the crepe- forgive my ignorance in the name. Got a bottle of wine across the street and really enjoyed it

This Eritrean spot is an absolute gem, offering a truly authentic and flavorful dining experience. The cozy atmosphere paired with warm service sets the stage for a wonderful meal centered around authentic, tangy Injera bread. The highlight was definitely the lentil dishes, which were perfectly spiced and comforting, creating a rich flavor profile.

I got non-authentic, Eritrean-sounding food that tasted like American BBQ chicken and was way too overpriced. My vegetarian boyfriend ordered a vegetarian meal, and I ordered a chicken dish. We never asked our waiter to put our dishes together, but they put them together, thereby making my boyfriend’s dish non-vegetarian. I’ll never go back.

I’ve seen plenty of Ethiopians eating together as friends and family with their individual plates, while traveling through Ethiopia, so I have no idea what this owner is talking about. I do not believe one second that the spices came from Eritrea or Ethiopia, or from the continent of Africa for that matter.

I was really looking forward to trying this Ethiopian restaurant, but unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations. The food was subpar at best—lacking the rich flavors and freshness I’ve come to expect from Ethiopian cuisine.

But what truly ruined the experience was the service and atmosphere. When we arrived, we waited nearly 20 minutes just to have someone acknowledge us. Eventually, a staff member wandered over from the ice cream shop next door (which, oddly enough, seems to be part of the same business) to take our drink orders. It quickly became clear that the place was either severely understaffed or completely mismanaged.

The staff appeared to be mostly teenagers with little training and even less oversight. There was no sense of urgency, hospitality, or accountability. The overall vibe felt chaotic and disorganized, making the dining experience stressful rather than enjoyable.

I rarely write reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough to warrant a warning to others. Until there are major improvements in both the food quality and management, I can’t recommend this place

You don’t need to travel to Ethiopia or Eritrea to experience the food, it’s right here in Morristown! You can taste the care and passion that the chef owner makes in every dish. Although I have never been to Africa, I’ve experienced many Ethiopian restaurants, and I find this to be a true gem.

This is such a gem of Morristown – the food was delicious and the owner is so kind! Finding Ethiopian/Eritrean food outside of NYC is rare, so I’m glad this place exists right here in our own community! Will definitely be going back.
