The Red Sea Cafe is an excellent Ethiopian restaurant in a fantastic ice cream shop, the South Street Creamery! The three of us started with the tomato dip with injera chips and shared the injera plate with eggplant, beef siga, and chicken (this comes with greens and cabbage). If you haven’t had Ethiopian, injera is a soft bread served with stewed foods on top. You eat the different stews using the injera as a base to grab the stew with you hands. We always seem to want a second serving of injera when we eat Ethiopian so we eat every part of the meal to the last drop when the food is good.
RED SEA WAS DELICIOUS! All three of us have lived in the DC area, which has a large Ethiopian community and several Ethiopian restaurants; we’ve been to many Ethiopian restaurants and Red Sea is very, very good! Two differences: not oily and not too salty! The food is very healthy and reasonably priced!
The chicken and beef dish we shared was served with injera which is a nice fermented (gluten free) bread.
Everything was delicious and we would definitely go again to try other dishes. The flavor was something I have not had before!
I’ve seen plenty of Ethiopians eating together as friends and family with their individual plates, while traveling through Ethiopia, so I have no idea what this owner is talking about. I do not believe one second that the spices came from Eritrea or Ethiopia, or from the continent of Africa for that matter.
But what truly ruined the experience was the service and atmosphere. When we arrived, we waited nearly 20 minutes just to have someone acknowledge us. Eventually, a staff member wandered over from the ice cream shop next door (which, oddly enough, seems to be part of the same business) to take our drink orders. It quickly became clear that the place was either severely understaffed or completely mismanaged.
The staff appeared to be mostly teenagers with little training and even less oversight. There was no sense of urgency, hospitality, or accountability. The overall vibe felt chaotic and disorganized, making the dining experience stressful rather than enjoyable.
I rarely write reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough to warrant a warning to others. Until there are major improvements in both the food quality and management, I can’t recommend this place
